I had a Wolseley 6/80 in the 70s and I loved it. It had belonged to Lanchester police before me. I have had many great classics over the years. However, they weren't classics at the time. Great days and great cars.

My 1954 6/80 was my first car in 1966, a car I had wanted since I was 4 years old. Mine was a superb example, £50, but I was young and excitable and thrashed the hell out of it, even taking part in Autocross (in Bude where was working). In the end I had two before a couple of 6/90's. Now in my late years I still yearn for that ohc six sound and that wonderful long bonnet. I have considered getting another just one more time. You say 50 was the norm but, when sitting with my father driving his 4/44 we considered 60 to be "more exciting" This is a super video, thank you. Would like to know more about how the electric steering was installed. Yes, the gears need to be engaged a little slower to avoid a grind unless you double de-clutch as I always did. This later car, like the one I had, should have the later 10 port cylinder head with external water rail which was supposed to improve cooling but it didn't really help. Exhaust valves would be "Stellited" on overhaul. This later engine developed 72bhp on a 6.6:1 compression ratio whereas earlier 8 port head cars were 7:1 The distributors could not be interchanged without changing the advance mechanism. Down under a chap regularly raced a much modified 6/80 and photos of it in action can be found on the tinternet. Good Luck to you and All, keep those 6/80's rollin'.

Yet another fantastic, detailed comment! I love it! Wow your knowledge of these cars is fantastic! I thoroughly driving the Wolseley, my friend bought the car to recommission and sell on for a profit. I took the opportunity to drive the car and film the experience, I'm happy you came along the journey with me!

My father bought an immaculate one owner 1953 version in 1960 with 42000 miles on the clock. He sold it in 1967 with 72000 miles recorded. Driving too fast could cause the valves to burn out and there was a regular need for a decoke, as was common in those days. Lovely to see this one.

Yes, the police kept spare overhauled cylinder heads available so that downtime was kept to a minimum. Standard valves cost 35/6 then; those with Stellite tips to resist burning cost nearer £5. Problem was that the valves didn't rotate and hot carbon caused localised burning. A 1954 6/80 was my first car, costing me £185 in 1961. Our longest run in it was from Scotland to Hastings. They were fitted with an oil pressure gauge but no temperature gauge and unfortunately I roasted mine when a core plug blew and lost the coolant necessitating an engine-out overhaul which I did myself. I sold mine to get a deposit for a house! Great cars but care was needed with gear changes to avoid crunching, especially into second.

Lovely car. Your comments about seat belts or lack thereof illustrates why I don`t like safety features in modern cars. Not having those features makes you aware of your vulnerabilityand so you drive accordingly. Long may this car bring you pleasure. I get my MG Magnette on Friday.

Thismorning (Sunday) my old mate Mike (76) came by to watch your excellent video featuring the wonderful Wolseley 6/80. As the video unfolded we were back in my car in 1966 roaring about the place and enjoying my super old car. I drove it in Autocross and trials and the original motor was reduced to a smoking wreck leading to the purchase of a second (and nice) example for a replacement. Mike was glued to my telly screen as your feature unfolded. You have presented a super "look back in time" for all enthusiasts. Mike and I send you our greatful thanks and best wishes to all.

I remember going to the coast in a new one of these, when I was a boy, dark green. Superb motors, I think a big chassis too. 6 cyl. OHC engine. Used as cop cars too.

such a beautiful old car, I had one, only mine was a 1952 model, a real pleasure to drive even in modern traffic, circa 1982 untill 2014, then age got to me. That one the the cincro cones sound like they are worn, or you are changing gear to fast.

I love those old cars derived from the Morris Oxford MO series. Never thought I would a see a POV video of one. Thank you. It must an extremely rare car now. Sounds lovely and seems to handle well also. Those old gearboxes require patience and some help with double de-clutching changing down, but it seems as sound as a pound. Thank you from George

I used to travel in a Morris Isis, same car, different radiator. Yes, very noisy but that 6-cyl pulled really well.

You got to remember that you cant just slot them in to low gear on the fly like you can in the moderns. They do however go in if you got the knack, but in saying that, it wasn't something i did. The oldies could get away with moving off from a "near stop" in second gear, long as you're careful and didn't rush it lol

We had one of these, blue. Had a tour of the Highlands in company with relations, it was a big car. I must have been eight.

When bank robbers drove Jags and coppers drove Wolseleys or MG Magnettes: life was so much less complicated, and your money was always on (or with!) the naughty boys. But those cars, fast or slow, had style.

I didn't add the power steering, However if it has it as an option. I'm using it 😅 I've got an old Lada with mighty heavy steering so don't think I'm not used to it cupcake 😉

Can anyone remember a car of approximately the same type, age and I think also a six cylinder. The distinguished feature of the car I am trying to identify had. A stubby gear lever located in a cutaway in the driver’s seat cushion.

@@roberthendy9493 Thanks for the info. I remember sometime in the 60s driving one for a day or two. Other than I worked in the motor trade I can’t remember why. Your input will help me find out a little more about them.

The music was irritating. Don't need it if you're narrating & I appreciate hearing your experience as you drive it. Presume the camera was on your head. It made me sea sick (& I don't suffer from motion sickness), review your footage & you'll notice it doesn't align to your field of vision.
