This is just an over view video of my 1954 gmc m211 military 6x6. I tried to cover the things that someone would like to know before buying a xm211 or xm135.

Very nice truck! Here is a link to a parts list for these trucks on Steel Soldiers that several of us put together. Maybe it will help you find parts easier. I update it as we find parts that work. www.steelsoldiers.com/threads/g749-parts-list.137722/

I drove.one for two years in Hawaii About a year on the big island and a year at Scholfield barracks on Oahu . I've seen the exhaust manifold get cherry red climbing the grade from Hilo to Poakuloa half way up Mauno Kea. Had a place to pull over and open the hood. Much of the 36 mile trip was at 5 miles per hour. Go like hell on level ground. The.marines had Reos.

Nice truck. If I can trouble you for that IH part number on the brake master cylinder that would be much appreciated! Thanks!
@crf100
@crf100 3 года назад
I do not have the OEM IH part number but the one that I used came from Oreillys and is listed to fit IH trucks from the late 70s and early 80s in the oreilly catalog. The oreilly part number is NMC11251 I have crossed this over to a couple other brands that I have not personally used so I can not say for sure if they will fit and function like the OEM unit. These are the part numbers that it crosses over to (Napa remanufactured) NMC-P2842 (Napa new) NMC-m2842 (ACDELCO) 18m3 (Centric) 13083004 (Dorman) m2842 (Raybestos) mc2842

@@crf100 thanks! Did you remove the residual valve? Also may I please trouble you for details on the carburetor? These is a few different options for a G2.
@crf100
@crf100 3 года назад
Joe HVACCONTROLS I did not remove any valves from the master cylinder but I did take the clip off of the front of the master cylinder and I pulled the spring and the piston out of it to compare it to the master cylinder that I took off of the truck and the only difference I was able to notice was the fluid extender that screws into the top of the master cylinder but I was able to unscrew it from the old master cylinder and the threads were the same on the new master cylinder so it just screwed in. The carburetor I bought off of eBay and the add shows that it will fit Jeep engines but the bolt pattern was the same so all I had to do was make throttle linkage and the one I ordered had an electric choke that I converted over to manual I think it is a copy of a 2g but i do not know the exact model and dimensions so I will post a link that shows the one I bought.

No I am sure it is available but I did not look into it very much. Not long after I made this video the transmission went bad so I switched the engine and transmission out for a 472 Cadillac and a turbo 400.

I was an E-5 in HHC 2-162nd Regimental Combat Team 41st Division Infantry 1965-71...We were a Guards outfit and I had a dedicated Deuce for the 6 years. It was a little newer than the one in the video. It had a 10 ton pto winch on the front and that beast would really jump when you stomped on it. Those Hydro's had been designed by GMC for the Sherman Tank. Now I've got a nice 94 GMC Suburban 350/200 with the modern Hydro and it jumps pretty good itself....

Drove one up and down the Mountain roads, first a logging road and then a private road to my friends Hunting lodge in BC. I was born in 1954 so was she. Incredibly loud, but nothing I have driven could go through what we went though.

No the previous owner swapped out the distributor and I was told that Memphis installed the shifter to help keep the transmission from failing .

The transmission in mine just lost 3rd gear but these trucks get lots of crap because of other design flaws like the weak 302 engine and no power steering they were good trucks in the 50s and 60s but are not very good by modern standards.

There is a permanent four-wheel drive, you need to turn off the transfer box, because the fuel consumption is high, but here the transfer box does not turn off

Great video, nice truck. If you ever get the chance to get the correct carburetor for it, do so and install it. You find that it works very with the 302. Here is a link to a thread I wrote about the carb., forums.g503.com/viewtopic.php?t=310329, oddly enough year ago to this day. Have fun with your Jimmy, they're great trucks!! I had to edit to offer help. For parts, seals, gaskets and such try here; memphisequipment.com/.

Beautiful truck I just seen one for sale and automatically had question and stared looking around at videos your is great well the best ! Can I a please borrow your knowledge for a few min . Is this street legal to drive ? Is there special insurance? I wold love to drive it to work daily
@crf100
@crf100 2 года назад
Thank you for the complement. Mine is street legal but it can be hard getting titles for military vehicles in some states. As far as insurance I went with Hagerty insurance because my regular company would not insure a vehicle from 1954. I would not recommend daily driving it if it still has the factory 302 with the automatic transmission. The factory transmissions are finicky and are know to have major internal issues.
@54duce14

I just got one of these, how do you check the transmission fluid?
@crf100
@crf100 2 года назад
I think there is a cover on the floor with a dipstick under it but I am not sure. Be careful what fluid you put in it I changed my fluid and after that my transmission started to slip. If I remember right the original fluid is SAE 30 non detergent but most have been converted to dexron 3 or type f depending on who did the conversion.

You said in the video that it is full time 6x6...it isn't, the front axle is engaged and disengaged automatically by action of a jaw-type clutch, located in the transfer case. Front axle is disengaged except when tractive effort is needed (rear wheel spin).
@crf100
@crf100 3 года назад
Yes it does have a clutch to engage the front axle and there is a shaft on the transfer case to switch the clutch from locking in forward gears to locking in reverse. I left mine in forward when I removed the factory transmission which usually switches the clutch from forward to reverse that is why I call it a full time 6x6 because I cannot switch it to 4x6 like the modern machines but you are correct that it is not actually a full time 6x6.

@@crf100 I have a 1952 GMC with the banjo axles, I'm pitting a F250 extended csb and body on it and bobbing it. I plan on putting a 427 Ford with a 4spd in it. It will still be 2x4 until the back axles spins then it will be 4x4. This will be the 3rd conversion, 2nd one with a GMC, I usually use AM General, Kaiser or International 2.5 and 5 tons. The only down fall I found is it doesn't have a 2 spd transfercase. My first GMC only had a in and out transfercase.
@crf100
@crf100 3 года назад
@@blackwidowgarage7401 the transfer case can be converted to a 2 speed but you will loose your pto. There is a guy near me who bobbed one of these gmc’s and just used a second transfer case on the tail shaft of his th400. The biggest problem I have had with this transfer case is that it is geared too low it is not a 1:1 ratio and the transfer case in my truck also locks in the front axle when I am turning I have tried putting the front axle clutch in reverse but it makes terrible noises when I get up speed. The front axle can be flipped to allow use of a standard transfer case. The top loader m35 series axles can be found cheap used they will allow use of a standard transfer case and will have better driveline angles.

The master cylinder I bought was from oreillys it was $60 the part number is nmc11251 I took it apart and the internals were identical to the one that came on my truck when I bought it the only difference I noticed is the reservoir extender which I was able to take off of my old master cylinder and swap over to the new one.
