Gotta love multipurpose products like Brasso! Thankfully the part with all the lettering just needed a little cleaning, lovely results. Your series has given me so many great ideas.
No criticism here. My nostalgia levels skyrocketed when I saw the tube tester. My only 'criticism' is that you allowed the owner/client to dictate the level of the restoration. Yes, I know that this is your livelihood, but dang! I would have LOVED to see a full restoration!!! The old electronics are surprisingly durable & reliable. I'm not at all surprised to see that radio required only minimal repairs to be restored to operating condition. Good job!
Thank you once again J.L yes it would have been nice to do the caps, many people watching this video has commented about the same thing. When I do replace the caps I like to pull the guts out of the old ones and insert new ones so the appearance is original. It's time consuming but very interesting to watch. Most people watching though have no idea and I think it would have gone over their heads. Thanks for your comments they are always appreciated 👍
Thank you Rosas that's very kind of you to say and thanks for watching. If you haven't already please consider Subscribing and check out some of my other work.
Beautiful. I sold a very similar one last year with a clock and an alarm - AWA Radiola. Almost made me cry watching this old girl come back to life! Amazing!
@@deebee3901 oh wow that's probably worth a bit then. Best not to plug it in again and try it or you could do more damage. I'm sure there are some enthusiast your way that could get it running if you wanted.
These Astors are rare as hell! Even the Diamond Dot Astor radios are mythical in rarity! It's just pure genius of the design of the radio, and it even tells you what state you want to tune in on based on the letter abbreviations.
I very much enjoyed this video. My father was a radio mechanic from the late 40s through the 50s, and later worked on early computers for IBM here in Oz...your video brought back many memories for me - thank you 😊
You are most welcome 😀 I'm glad you enjoyed it and that it brought back some special memories for you. I appreciate you watching and leaving such a lovely comment. Please check out some of my other projects when you have time.
Señor: que alegría da contemplar la recuperación de un aparato que funciona con lámparas en plena época de los transistores y de los microchips. Es usted un maestro!!!
Very nice, I see so many other “restorers” just absolutely ruin things by over-restoring or just plain making them into effectively a new object with a couple old parts, but this was very respectfully done and made it look nice and function well without losing its original character. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment Drinksfromtap, very much appreciated. Most radios do need a lot of work but this one will be mainly just for show. Brings back memories of my childhood of my dad listening each evening at 7 to the ABC news read by (spelling may not be right) Peter Dore-Smith on the Astor sitting on top of the fridge. Early 60s I reckon. Thanks for the memories.
Wow!!! This looks like a new radio!!! Your electronic skills and restoration expertise have produced a great result!! The old radios had character and classic lines. You did a formidable job!! Thanks for sharing your skills and video with us!! The Old Army Scout…
Beautiful restoration of a radio that's as old as I am! I still have my Radio Shack Realistic radio that was a birthday present in the 1960s from my mom and dad! Still works.
Thanks for watching and sharing your story Stephen, very much appreciated. Radio Shack, even I remember those days. I bet your radio is still in excellent condition 👍

You are a man of many talents my friend. Am scared to touch anything electronics 🤭. That looks fantastic. Now you have something to listen to in the workshop 😉 👍 👩🔧
Thanks very much buddy 😁 I only started playing around with radios about 2 years ago. I have about 10 of them now. You should never be scared to try new things. It's a pity the old radios only have AM stations.
it still amazes me that the rest of the world can do restos on these kinds of antiques AND get the supplies to do so, while in the states, this stuff has long since gone in the skip or has been buried in a barn, garage, or storage shed for decades. even 80's and 90's electronics and consoles can be put back into working shape, while the US chucks everything.
Thanks very much for watching. That's crazy it's all being thrown away. In Australia these sorts of things are very expensive to buy, even if they are damaged. There are still parts out there it's very surprising actually. Please check out some of my other projects If you have time. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j7oK7tRsano.html
@@Austeration The US is hitting that point, now, but the parts themselves, WHEN they're available, are prohibitively expensive or on perpetual backorder. it's also like the ONLY thing still salvageable in working order up here are cars...and that depends on the state you're in on whether or not you can :P
Beautiful finished product . I grew up in the 50s in Cuba and all we had was a radio, in which I heard many great shows of adventure and even the beginnings of Rock 'n Roll . My mom would listen to some soap operas at night. Warm memories of those times and of the tubes getting brighter when you turned it on . Had to wait for them to warm up before it came on . I think those radios were beautiful and still are. Would love to have one but radio today is nothing but garbage and commercials. 'd be nice to have one that picked up those old shows, like the one in the Twilight Zone episode ! = )
Thanks for watching and for sharing your story. How cool would that be if you could pick up something from the past. Here in Australia we can still pick up some small community channels. They might be the closest thing these days to what you describe. You need to find your self an old radio and have it repaired. Check out some of my other videos if you have time 👍
My father purchased Telefunken Radio for Rs 500 [6$]in 1961, it was an interesting object and a surprise for my class and street mates Recently i found this masterpiece in a store yard in my house in disabled condition I kept it in a box, reminding me my parents
Thank you for watching and sharing your memory ashok, very much appreciated. Those Telefunkel radios are an amazing piece of technology for their time. You should have it out on display regardless if it's working or not. Please check out some of my other projects if you have time 👍

Nice job on the radio, especially the cabinet. That came up very nicely! It’s a pity the owner only wanted you to get it going. I’m sure it would sound a lot better with those wax caps changed, and the filter caps too, just for safety. Anyway I subscribed as your other videos look interesting too.
Thanks for watching Don, very much appreciated. Yes I would have loved to have done that and shown a bit more of a restoration. I might do another radio at some point but at the moment I'm trying to mix it all up a bit. Thanks very much for Subscribing 👍
@@AusterationGetting it running and keeping it running are two different things. Something tells me that in the year plus since you restored this, it's quit working again.

The click, as you turned the radio on. The lights of the dail immediately coming on. The slow glow coming out of the back of the radio as the tubes were warming up. Then the hum coming from the speaker, followed by the music from the station. Turning the tuning knob to find another station. Hearing faint far off sound of other radio stations. Then the loud squeals and hums of radio interference coming off the neighborhood radios. Then finding that next station and sitting back to The Shadow, or Dragnet, or Ma and Pa Kettle. These were the Golden Age of Radio.
@@Austeration sorry to take so long responding. If I can ever get my finances going. I'm going to try becoming a guest teacher and show off some of my antiques, including a working Radio.

great job requiring great skills the end result amazing radio reminds me very much of the Polish radio Pioneer (it is about the construction of electronics, number of tubes, etc.) from the 1950s
Thanks for watching Paul and for the kind comments. Pioneer is a great brand. I have others in my collection but not a vintage Pioneer. I love these old Radios 👍

I have a similar one, AWA Radiola, with radium clock. I've always wanted to see it restored. It used to work when I was a kid, but not anymore. Also it's a royal pain to clean with all the grooves in the design.
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment Wolfie, very much appreciated. It's never too late to have yours restored and if not they look great all cleaned up out on display. Excellent job. I thought it was a USA radio at first and that you were chopping through a line cord, then I noticed it had european valves. I was in the radio /TV trade for 50 years, starting in 1954 but I had v=never seen one of those sets before.
Thanks for watching Peter. It's actually an Australian radio. If you look at the front dial plate it has all the channels for each Australian State. Sounds like your a bit of an expert in your field after 50 years.
