1955 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer in Red Black White & Engine Sounds on My Car Story with Lou Costabile

Well Lou, You sure didn't lie when you said that you were going to have some pretty darn awesome *ALL-American Automobiles* coming up! The Great, Virgil Max 'Ex' Exner Sr., truly outdid even himself with this stunning '55 Dodge, (not "Doidge" as in the description lol) 'Custom Royal Lancer', a magnificent American Beauty! The U.S. Automakers of that era, especially Chrysler built true gems; not only in their detailed bodywork of kinetic-art quality appearance but, also in their innovative and advanced engineering milestones. U.S. Automakers were way ahead of any European automakers; Japan wasn't even in the running, as they were designing Soap Box Derby type cars by comparison. The 'Super Red Ram V-8' had a whopping 193-hp & a stump-pulling 245-ft-lbs of Torque! (according to Chrysler's specs) For a mid-'50's car, even an American made car, that is one powerful engine! While European cars averaged pathetic hp ratios, (unless they were put in Go-Karts!) America was building rockets! Fore example, In 1952, the German Mercedes 300-SL, 'Super Light' (weight) which was a true 'Super Car', produced only a max of 175-hp! And that was their most powerful engine. A big "Thank You" to Frank as well! BTW., There is a guy in California who would buy that car in an instant! I doubt if you have heard of him, I think his name is Jay Leno. He did some obscure late night TV show Back in The Day called, 'The Tonight Show'.

That’s the most beautiful front ever created on a car. It’s a true work of metal art. I’d like to take that car and drive it about a million miles, seriously.

The first car I ever drove was a Royal Lancer green black and white dashboard gear shift. Fast as hell, the roof would cave in when on thehighway we had to hold it up. I was 8 years old then. Super memories. Thanks for the post 👍👍✌

Beautiful car, Frank and Lou. First year of Exner's all-new Forward Look. Designed by Exner and Maury Baldwin. With the D-500 Dodge Red Ram V8 engine, 279 cubic inches, 250 HP. The one-year-only Powerflite gear selector on rhe dash to the right side of the steering wheel. Beautifully designed instrument panel and steering wheel, which were carried over to 1956. An interesting side not is the overall design of the dash and wheel are faint copies of the 1951 Ford. This model has the little chrome fins on the rear fenders that became actual fins for 1956.

Don’t you just love those mid 50s cars. I noticed the downward pointing door handles that pulled backward. I had later model Plymouth’s with them on the back doors and flipped them upward so the kids couldn’t pull them backwards and open the doors while driving. Just a memory from way back when. Brings back great memories . Thanks Lou. 👍👍👍. Also did you notice no park on the gearshift. You had to use the parking handbrake.

My Grandpa bought one of these brand new in 1955. It was pink, black and white. He died in 1965, but my Grandmother kept it until around 1970, so I can remember riding in it. When she went to get rid of it, she offered it to my dad, but he didn’t have room for it.

Lou I just love this guy so much. He is one of my very favorite.owners you video. This unit is just outstanding! I just love his stories on his vehicles and his love for each of his vehicles. I love the three time paint on this car. Makes me sad he is selling this car and some of his others. I just feel like they won't be cared for like he does. I love all his vehicles! My love is still on that 1970 Plymouth Wagon! If I didn't live so far away in Ohio here I would love to see his vehicles! Another beautiful unit Lou! My first car was a 55 Ford Customline and it was an ugly duckling compared to this one. The chrome on this must weight 500 pounds. The 3 tone paint and all the chrome makes this really something for the eye to behold. Well, Lou the GTX for breakfast and now the Royal Lancer for lunch :-) Great video Lou thanks for taking the time to bring these videos to us.

Not a car that was popular among my high schools friends, but I would sure be proud to own this car now. Power steering - a luxury. And I had forgotten how hard it was to clean whitewall tires. Every good looking car had to have whitewalls. Good old SOS pads.

This is a real tri-tone treasure! Chrysler definitely had the right man at the right time in Virgil Exner. I hope Frank finds a very worthy buyer for this beauty.

Their was a book titled "The American Century 1945-1965" ,I haven't read the book but my Dad used to talk about it and it its really true, I've noticed cars made during this time seem to be a little better quality than others . Beautiful car!

I believe the fender skirts were an add on, car didn't come with them. I have the exact green one in the brochure shown at 7:08, all original and still beautiful... glows in the sunlight and moonlight (they tell me it's because the original paint has lead in it). Super red ram with the power pack option with three on tree and OD. (was grandpas... bought new august 1955). Never restored in any way, still as it was back then. Metallic thread is perfect everywhere as still has plastic seat covers from when new. 82000 miles. Same radio but no power steering or brakes. Aluminum keys too. Green seat belts still wrapped but in old plastic. Hood always bites my head...very low...never do remember that until it gets me. I'm 52 with 13 cars and you are so right... if they just sit, problems develop. Need to drive them. Thank you so much for showing me this car... they are really something. I won't sell mine as I have pictures of me at 3 months old in the back seat... way back then.

Literallyi love every Chrysler Product in 1955. DeSoto and New Yorker the faves. This one is sooo beautiful too. Love the 59 in this model the best.

used to work on cars of this age when they were almost new. never had a problem with the hood. Guess you learn to miss the latch. Great car and video.

My late grandfather once owned a car like this one except his was two tone blue and white and didn't have the fender skirts. It was easily the nicest car on our block (we lived in the South Bronx). He drove it to and from his job as a night waiter at the original Reuben's in midtown Manhattan. He gave the car to my mother in 1961 or 1962 but by then it didn't run very well so she got rid of it and bought a used 1956 Plymouth Savoy. He wound up buying a 1961 Dart Pioneer but it by then Chrysler had gotten the ugly stick out and their cars weren't nearly as nice as the older ones were. The Dart got stolen in 1967 and by the time the NYPD recovered it he had passed away.

Her car when purchased new by original owner had a white top, red saddle, and black lower body. It was painted all black by the time she purchased.

No more room for the chrome! Almost literal as one can get - haha. Lou, this is a beautiful car! I don't recall seeing this one even as a kid. I kinda feel ashamed of myself though. Why? Because.., well.., don't hate me - but my brain wants to see this car tricked out, full killer hotrod! I know - I know, ya just don't dress the Lone Ranger up as Liberachi under strobe lights on a fogged stage, but man - sometimes ya just gotta do stuff. (heh) But I digress. This is awesome as is. I feel so evil having those thoughts - I should probably talk to a therapist about that. Not about the Lone Ranger but about the car. Let's be clear. :-) *side note:* i love that transmission shift arrangement - its amazing!

Hi Lou and Frank. Great car, very handsome. Thanks for the cleaning tips. I think on the towels, to remove soap residue, you should do a second wash with white vinegar. . That will rinse away excess soap. FYI soap residue and skin create mildew which can give your towels that awful smell. Try not to use excessive amount of detergent when laundering. 👍😉

I have a 1956 Dodge 2d sedan D-500🏁 Interceptor 315 High Performance Hemi it has Dodge racing division orginal seat belts.. This is the other one of the two on the planet..was the fastest Cop Car on the planet in 1956.🏁

Those style taillights were used on other high end Dodge models I believe for a couple of years.

We had a similar 1955 Royal Lancer 2 dr hdtp while growing up. Ours had the red on top and around tailights, white on sides, black on hood. Don't remember black on trunk, thinking it was white. We moved from NC to WV in 1969, mom decided to sell the Dodge instead of taking it with us. Sold it for $100. I had hoped to inherit it since I turned 16 y/o in 1969 but nooooooooo

Not only the trunk. A lot of cars from that era you could start without the key. Locking the ignition switch was separate from shutting the car off. If you didn't lock it all you had to do was turn the switch.

The power brakes have been replaced, it originally had bellows. I think the red was originally more gardenia pinkish like the brochures.

Frank, What color scheme/ code was that? I also have a 55. Trying to figure out the colors.

this being a '55, you can see where the guys at general motors may have borrowed a few cues from what chrysler was up to, and then cashed in big time on some iconic designs. sportsmans and royal lancers have a kind of forced rocket look in the rear, that didn't age well.

Be careful with microfiber towels. They can trap tiny, hard particles in them more so than cotton and scratch surfaces!

It's almost sad to hear that Frank is selling some of his cars. He's been a great caretaker for them, and what I like is he isn't one of the big collectors where the cars vanish into some rich man's never driven again, never seen again warehouse collection.

here is my glass cleaning trick, use any cleaner any towel to remove dirt or wash car then take your sponge from your tub of wax (carnuba is best) and coat the windshield lightly w/sponge residue not even necessary to dip in wax and remove w/old cotton t-shirt...spotless and clear and water repellent
