The International Harvester R-180 Restoration is back at last, now with a new transmission (SM465), clutch, and crossmember. In this video, I'm aiming to get my "new-to-me" transmission mated to my 454 which previously had an automatic. Once everything is done, we'll be one step closer to putting it in the truck and hearing it run for the first time.

Interesting. As I remember, the medium duty and heavy duty 366 and 427 trucks of the 1970's used a double-disc fiber clutch for the first part of the decade and then switched to a ceramic double-disk later in the decade.

Funny you should mention it, I actually had a 427 at one point I considered placing in this truck. It came with a Clark 285v transmission which I wanted to use as well, but was never able to source a clutch for it. I want to say that I remember reading the original transmissions for the international this is destined to go into might actually have used a cloth style clutch, would that be similar to the fiber style you mentioned?

The spot on the engine mount that you thought was welding is where someone cut the bolts holding the mounts to the cross member. It's called a junkyard pull.

Ahh, that makes sense.

After watching you tap the pilot bushing, I see that there are certain advantages to working in a cold workshop.. cross member worked out really well, too. Great stuff 👍👍

I wish I had flimed a little more of that process, the first night it didn't work well at all but the second night when I added the paper towel to help it seal better, it almost just popped right out on its own. I was shocked!

Love seeing this all coming together, great video series!

Thanks Matt! It feels really, really great to be putting parts together instead of taking them apart. The poor truck is buried over its frame in snow for now, but I'll have it all ready to go in for the spring

@@RustRehab I'm watching your video now. Savoring every second. Thanks. Truck is running good. I recently had it out on a hay run.

Thanks Steve, I'm working on the truck this week trying to get it ready to take the new engine and trans. Hopefully they will be more frequent videos this year!

Using bread believe it or not works even better than grease to remove the pilot bearing because it doesn't squeeze out as much

@@talesfromthebottle6314 I don't know if I ever showed that in a video, but I did try it at one point! I wonder how desperate the first guy who tried using bread to remove the pilot bearing was lol.

Thanks Zane! I'm just glad to be making progress again. I get hung up easy thinking about what I could do in theory, vs what is really probably good enough. Enjoy your new year Zane!

right on, i think you had kids who were interested in your truck right? I hoped to do a little more to the truck before the snow set in, but we've had several feet already this month and the truck is buried for the winter. I'll try to make sure everything is ready to go for the spring

Um doing the same thing with my 74 200 pickup putting a sm465 and 454 in it

It's a classic combo. I would have put a 350 in mine, it's geared so low that I won't see much benefit from the 454, but the 454 is what I had so it's what's going in.

ah your putting a 454 in the truck😮‍💨
@RustRehab

I would have preferred to put another international motor in there, but there's just none around. I got the 454 cheap, so I'm pretty happy to have it in there. Less happy that gas prices exploded again though, but this was never gonna be a daily anyways.

Hopefully pretty soon, I lost a bit of footage but I should have one video out pretty soon, and I'm working on putting in the new engine and trans today so whenever I'm done that should be another

Listen close. I am tickled shickless that its coming together. I would while the engine is out try and see if the plug wires can be tucked under the manifolds if they don't tuck tight to the engine as well. If the manifolds are with in two inches don't mount wires in that way as it will be a bitch to get them out short of cutting an taking out pieces of them. That bolt next to the fuel pump is in backwards and usually the nut is secured to the mount but since its never been in this rig, run the right bolts through... it looked like they used starter bolts for the mounts to me as they look long and don't fit tight to the mount like they should. Tight is a friend here as that will wiggle loose and come out if its not right. I would probably change fuel pumps while out and easier to do. Easy off oven clean the engine and give it a bath. Plus I would change the timing chain an pull that pan off and get it spotless. Make sure you check the pick up tube to make sure its not loose at all. if it is, redo it and when its in the right place tack weld it to the pump as they are famous for losing the bottom because of air cavitation in the pan. Also as dirty as that engine is, I would pull the intake off an use right stuff on the ends of the block so that intake doesn't let oil leak there. I am one of the best an know this is true cause I told myself so. I am a phd armchair mechanic who has actually turned wrenches for a living. Good luck. While that pan is down, hammer those holes for holding the pan out so it does tighten an don't overtighten as there is tight an there is too tight. I use right stuff sealer on mine and leave the pan slightly loose while that silicone drys, so when its tightened it doesn't crawl in to the pan and leak. I am sure you knew this but reminding one is sometimes a lifesaver

Thanks for the advice Morgan! I still have a lot of tidying up to do to that block before it sits in thr truck perminatly for sure. Do you know if oven cleaner freezes by chance? I've tried some other degreasers but they just freeze them the block and don't clean. If worse comes to worse, I'll just bring it inside and let it warm up first (oh yeah, my wife will love that lol) I'll look at doing that timing chain too, but the nice thing about these Chevs is that if I end up with another project more suited for the 454 in the future, it would take very little effort to just swap in a 350 using the same mounts and such. A 454 is way over kill for this build, but I'm glad to have it here anyways after my last 350 didn't work out. I'm nervous to get into this 454, because I know as soon as I start tinkering with it I'm going to not be able to help myself and I'll end up rebuilding it.

@@RustRehab I have not heard of it, anything freezes if cold enough ... I know that carpet cleaners use nitrogen for cleaning ovens. Just about anything needs a stimulant to get something real clean. If it doesn't show clearly like up under the manifolds, then what doesn't come off will hold paint as well. Your not going to get a lot cleaner if you take it to the hotsy or other high pressure cleaners. Some things need a media like sand or shells, baking powder and then its still there. I have waved a torch and found it will bake some dirt in harder. I know how it shows off hard work, the meticulous hard scrub will remove most anything including skin. Its awful easy to fall into the rabbit hole as I have been there too many times big block equals high torque, small block will get power but without torque what good is it

@RustRehab 2 года назад
The entire truck, or something specific? I'm really behind on the videos, the truck itself is much further along now. The driveline in installed, a lot of body work has been finished, but it still needs some clutch and brake work before she'll be able to drive down the road.

Are you running hydro clutch?
@RustRehab
@RustRehab Год назад
Good question. I've been keeping an eye out for a junked Chev to steal all the clutch components from, like pedal, cylinder, etc so it depends on what I find. I can set up either on this trans. I'm leaning a little towards cable, but I'm open still to hydro.
