1955 Moomba Pageant: A Glimpse into Melbourne's Cultural History
From The Age, dated March 15, 2005 :
"Back to where it all began with Moomba's first queen in 1955, beauty pageant winner Beverley Jones (nee Stewart). Grandchildren Jack McCorkell and Thomas Willson were mighty proud, holding the banner: "My nana was the first Moomba Queen in 1955 . . . We love you nana."
So, Bev, how does it feel? "Today is everything I thought it would be." It was 50 years ago that young Beverley beat 300 contestants to become "Miss Henley on the Yarra" and Moomba's first royal representative.
Queen Beverley hopes the festival reigns for some time. "It's such a wonderful family day."
