Installing a clutch on a 1957 Chevy 235 Inline 6 engine. I'm putting this motor in my 1955 First Series Chevy Truck and this video is to show you how I installed this clutch. Your engine may be different than this one, but the basic functions of all manual (non-hydraulic) clutches are pretty much the same.

when you do the trans, clean the needle bearings and the hole, then use grease and only grease on them as it will hold them in place, they will pack nicely if you keep them clean, if it does not go back together nicely, pull it apart and look in the hole for a needle bearing out of place, they sometimes will pack up against the back of the hole. this will prevent the trans from going back together correctly. once again if it does not fit , do not force it. pull apart and check then proceed again. its a pain , but once you get it its actually easy.

great video, what your doin will work but, as far as a dummy shaft goes you don't need one, you can use the trans itself, the old chevies allow you to simply loosly tighten the pressure plate and that allows the disk to free float. This allows you to use the trans as a dummy to line up the clutch. when the trans goes into the pilot bushing and goes into place, then simply tighten the pressure plate bolts from the bottom and you can then pull the trans if you want to. also it is best to use lock tite on the flywheel bolts. don't have to but its a good idea,

hi Travis. I hope your clutch is working good. the pressure plate was in stalled at the factory with shouldered bolts. this was done to center the pressure plate on the flywheel. you will notice that there are no alignment pins in the flywheel like a modern flywheel. the shouldered bolts do that job. they should be torqued to 35 ftlb. these bolts need to be reused of replaced with shouldered bolts of the same diameter so as to keep the plate centered.

cardude59 that's good info. thanks. I'm about to put a new transmission on so, my clutch is out at the moment. I'll be sure to take your advice when I put it all back together.

found that out the hard way. installed a T5 5 speed on my 57 235 in a 50 chevy styline and it shook when I started the engine. traced it to the pressure plate not being centered. only took 2 weeks to figure it out. found and installed the shouldered bolts and shake was gone. good luck with your project.

cardude59 thank you! I'm going to do a T5 swap in it soon and this is really good to know. that's why I have this channel, so I can learn as I go from good people like you. have a good one.

Travis I hope you get this. I have a 57 235 in a 50 styleline with a T5 5 speed trans. I just love it! the trans I have is out of a 2.8 L s-10 pickup. I needed a 1" thick adaptor plate to bolt it in as the input shaft Is 1 inch longer that the stock 3 speed and the bolt pattern is differant. the shifter is in the right position for the car . I used an astro van clutch disc and stock pressure plate. works great!!! hope this helps. good luck.

If you can manage to install the flywheel square and parallel to the end of the crank, it will slide right on over those dowel pins, and bolting it up will be much less hassle.

Im helping a buddy with his 235. He has engine and trans together on the engine crane, noticed you can turn the crank easily by hand with not much force needed. i can turn it with both hands fully extended out, on the pulley, just to give you an idea how easy it is to turn. not too familiar if thats normal for these older engines. thanks!

Hello Travis, I'm installing an 11" Clutch kit and flywheel on my 46 1.5Ton. May I possibly know what your flywheel Manufacturer was as shown in the video and Part Number? What size Clutch kit did you use? Thanks

Travis, how can I get a better picture of how the clutch is inside that assembly. I know there the clutch on the outside facing the flywheel, then is there anything in between the pressure plate and the cover? Etc.. is there anywhere I can get a parts breakdown of how it all goes together?

Dear Travis, love your videos. I'm looking for the torque specs for the 1957 Chevy with the cast two-speed power glide automatic. For a six-cylinder 235 engine. I've bought manuals and watched other videos online I cannot find them ANYWHERE, can you help me please? I'm stuck at this point and I can't continue my project. Can you point me somewhere?

You mentioned you had to move the engine with a screw drive to move the pressure plate/clutch- where do you turn the engine with the screw driver- the front bottom pulley? Great video... thanks!!!
@tduffdesign

I used a flat head screwdriver on the ring gear to turn the flywheel. There are tools out there for doing this the correct way. I picked one up at a swap meet for 5 bucks. Using the flywheel gives you more leverage and makes the engine easier to turn over.

Putting a clutch in my '58 DelRay. I just needed a little refresher course. Just curious, did you use lock washers on the pressure plate bolts? Thanks.
@tduffdesign
@tduffdesign 8 лет назад
+Bennie G It wouldn't hurt to put lock washers on the pressure plate bolts. I have taken the clutch out again because I had to put a new starter on and needed to see the ring gear to make sure the teeth were meshing correctly. I plan on putting lock washers on as well as using blue locktite just in case. I would recommend using red locktite on the flywheel bolts if you ever have to take the flywheel off.

I'm converting my 1957, 235 automatic to a 5 speed standard. Do you know if a different pilot bearing is necessary when making this conversion? Thanks for your video Travis!
@georgewilson9121
@georgewilson9121 5 лет назад
no, they are the same, a bearing may be a better choice altho I have always had decent luck with the bushings, make sure that it goes in tight and does not move once installed. it will cause issues otherwise.

would you be able to change the clutch with the engine still in the car
@tduffdesign
@tduffdesign 7 лет назад
Yes, you can, but it's a little bit of a pain. It's easier than pulling the motor though! How I've done it before is, pull the drive shaft off, disconnect the shifter linkage off the side of the transmission (assuming that you have the stock drivetrain, take off the four main bolts on the transmission, and pull it off. This will make things much easier. On the stock motors, the clutch pack is all within the bellhousing as it is separate from the transmission. So you almost always have to pull the tranny to work on these. Once you have the tranny off, you can remove the dust cover (inspection plate) and get right to the pressure plate and clutch. Like I said in this video, you might want to rotate the crank with the flywheel to get to all of the bolts on the pressure plate.

Eric Schultz yeah every day is a little much, but at the time I was unemployed and had nothing else to do other than work on this engine. I still try and start it up once a month and let it run for about an hour each time.
