'57 Rebel !!! The Hornet was sister car to the Ambassador, not the Rebel, and weighs about 700 lbs more, and has a14.5" longer wheelbase, than the Rebel, with the same engine. No way does it have an under 10 second 0-60 time. Great coverage of the styling (?) details. You mentioned the resemblance of the rear quarters to the earlier Nash cars. That's because thats the same body Nash brought out in 1952, The Hudson fins are welded to it, like Dodge did to it's 55 body, to give it the 56 fins. No way would George Romney have let them tool a new roof skin, in the last year of a low volumn car, and the last 2dr hardtop, until 1964. Its the same as it was in 1952. By 1957, theres no Hudson in the car, except for the badges and weirdly designed add ons. Thanks for the close ups! Gotta love the hood ornament. Some real mid century modern art. 👍

'55 has better instruments and grille... Hudson good looking by '57 and has the fabulous Hydramatic transmission option... too bad they couldn't keep going...
Sadly, we'll never see cars like them again. Parent Company Curtis-Wright ordered Packard to cease production in '57 also. Ironically, Packard was in trouble, but still relatively stable before ill advised Studebaker merger.
Yes, Nash didn't bother me so much, since I never cared for the look of Nash's cars anyway, but losing Hudson was a real shame...the worst one to me, was losing Packard...and tragic to see them die as "Packardbakers", like the Hudsons dying as "Hash's"...I think, really, the Packard name had more value than the Studebaker name, it should have been kept even if meant losing Studebaker..they should have moved Packard back to where it should be...a top tier luxury make. In it's heyday, Packard was a gold standard of quality and luxury, not only by American standards, but by World standards...
Even if we loosened the exclusivity China has, and favorism toward China in trade, it would help a lot...if we could trade with other countries on an even table as China, we would have other sources...Brazil, central american countries, Turkey, Pakistan, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, and other southeast asia countries, possibly some African countries...we wouldn't have all our eggs in one basket, which I think is not a good thing...@@zippydastrange
Technically, anyone can get into an industry like auto-making, but how many have access to the resources & billions it would take just to open doors & keep the lights on, let alone actually produce something? Preston Tucker was last independent who tried to break choke hold oligopolies had over domestic car market. He warned of what could happen when the "little guy" gets shut out.
1956 to 1958 is my favorite styling era. Interesting that the '55 & '56 Hornet could have a Packard V8. If you research it that V8 was designed to grow up to 500 cubic inches. Unfortunately all the Packard V8 gurus have died in the last 10 years. That engine's only weakness was the oil pump but there is a well-known aftermarket fix.
@@JohnnycdrumsOh yeah. Packard knew they couldn't afford to design new engines every few years. In the 2 years it was on the market it was the horsepower "king". They kept it 5 to 10 horsepower above whatever Cadillac made.
It’s hard to believe Studebaker would allow the Packard V8 to be supplied to AMC, but…they were hard up. I must disagree with Jay on the Corvette being the fastest car in these years. I believe the Studebaker Speedster and the Golden Hawk were the fastest production cars in ‘55 and ‘56. The Rambler Rebel was the king in ‘57, only because it weighed less than the Hornet.
@@seanhoward8025The Packard engine also went in the 56 Ambassador, while the new AMC 250, was in the Rambler. The fastest car top speed, and the quickest car are not the same thing. The Rebel and Corvette were the quickest 0-60 mph, the FI 283 was top at 7.0 to the Rebel's 7.5. Top speeds were recorded, but are never used in AMC's claims. Cars that are quickest, are usually geared quite differently from cars trying for top speed. The Rebel was a 3 speed/overdrive, with a 4:10 gear. I'm pretty sure the Corvette would have had a 4:11, or 4:56, neither likely to top more than 100 mph, by much.
I was really hoping that by this point we would do that more.. last year I worked at the Classic Car dealership so I got to drive a lot of those cars. This year it’s not like that but yeah I definitely would like to go for more rides that’s for sure I love sitting behind the driver gives you guys the Impression that you’re driving it
Could you do a "What's It Like" video on the Hudson Metropolitan? It was a rebadged and retrimmed version of the Nash Metropolitan, but much more rare and lesser known than it's Nash near twin sister.
I haven’t found a Hudson metropolitan yet but I’ve done to Nash versions they made four series of that car I’ve done the first series and the third series one was a convertible one was a hardtop.. That is a car that I Want to own I’ve actually been looking for one to buy but I don’t wanna spend a whole bunch of money on it and I want to do three episodes with it.. =) I want to compare it to a 55 or 56 Thunderbird because they look very similar when you’re sitting behind the wheel and there is more room in a metropolitan and there is a 55 Thunderbird
@@What.its.like. - I've only ever seen one and before that I didn't even know a Hudson version of the Nash (and later AMC) Metropolitan even existed. The car was in a wrecking yard in Niagara Falls Ontario about 30 or 35 years ago. It was completely intact and running and bodywise it was in quite reasonable condition. I could have bought the whole car for a $150! At the time though, I was big into '60's era muscle cars, so to me the car was just an oddball anomaly that I had absolutely no interest in. But now, with hindsight and some 35 odd years of maturing and greatly broadening of my automotive interests, it's now a regrettable case of "I coulda', woulda', shoulda' bought it but didn't".😢😢😢
I totally know what that’s like =) Every year around here there’s always a Studebaker Silverhawk that pops up on Facebook marketplace for $5000 I’m hoping this year I’ll have enough money for that the problem is is I want too many cars.. my wife isn’t into Classic Cars so that you know we can’t have too many.. I have a 52 Chevy truck it’s my every day truck so anytime I need to use the truck that’s the truck only truck I have.. my wife told me that I can buy a car but the whole family has to fit in it so I’m metropolitans kind of sort of out of the picture but I don’t know I’m still looking..

I think the final years 1956-1957 are the best looking Hudsons . The 1956 Hudson Hornet has the PACKARD V8 of 352 cubic inches and 2 speed heavy duty Twin Ultramatic Transmission. It too is definitely no slouch!!!!
Great choice =) The owner was telling me that the Hudson version got hydraulic valve lifters whereas the rambler rebel had solid lifters so they could make more adjustments to the engine.
Wing mirrors as the Brits call them, love it. Corvette boys at GM had some power, they were not happy when the 87 Buick Grand National V-6 turbo was faster than their Vette either, never mind the GNX !
Yeah nothing could ever be better than the Corvette it’s same is true today and the journalism department is still in bed with Chevy it is ridiculous but if I grew up if I was around back then I would’ve gave the end dependence the credit that they deserved I try to do that here.. =) One day this is B a bucket list thing for me I would love to find a rambler rebel and a 57 Corvette and run them I don’t wanna drive the cars but I will video them racing I wanna see which one is faster.. I would love to drag race a bunch of 50s cars actually I’d love to throw the Studebaker golden hawk in there as well because that’s a really fast car that nobody thinks is fast, i’ve heard they would walk a Thunderbird I would love to race charged 57 Thunderbird against a golden hawk from 57 1958 Edsel citation with a manual transmission versus a 58 Desoto adventurer would be another great race
He lived in the city I wish we could’ve opened it up maybe we could do that in the future who knows it won’t be the first time that I go.. We took it to the gas station and when we came out there was a bunch of people around it the one guy was asking me everything about it this was one of those weird episodes I put the episode together before I even shot the car and then I had to go back and fix a couple things.. But that car sounded even better in person than I did on the video I wish I could have gotten the sound better. It was an awesome day =) I can’t wait to find a Rambler rebel

I got to drive a 56 Nash cross country Rambler wagon and it was a very comparable experience but I think this rode better than that.. Yeah I can definitely see that but the styling is different between those two models I have never seen a 57 Nash but I’ve seen a 55.. that is a different looking car It’s not bad styled either the dashboard is very interesting if I remember correct it’s kind of in the center
@jdgimpa: Being rebadged Nashes the styling started to look a whole lot better especially the 1956-1957 models. The 1957 Model has performance that can rival the Chevy Corvette and the Chrysler 300. The NASH being a lighter car in weight can easily compete performance wise.
My family had a new 1954 Hudson Wasp. It didn't have power steering, so Mom had to make very wide turns to get it home. It was lemon yellow with green nylon interior - hideous.
I would consider this car more Nash than Hudson. Hudson was merely a trim package, with a garish grille. The roofline had the Nash-type reverse "C" pillar. It's interesting that Nash had continued to use the Hydra-Matic automatic, which Hudson had used back when Hudson was still Hudson. This was the last generation of the Hydra-Matic, actually named the Jetaway Hydra-Matic. Besides the introduction of a "Park" selector position, internally, it was different from any Hydra-Matic before this. It might be considered a pre-shifting transmission. The transmission was totally self-contained, with 2 internal fluid couplings. The transmission would change gears by draining one fluid coupling and filling the other, which had already had the next set of clutches engaged. This presented a smooth but long drawn-out shift. This was a true "slushbox". Interestingly, it shows an optional "automatic overdrive", not indicating which transmission it was optional on. Possibly Rambler's first use of the Girling/Laycock electric overdrive. Rambler had this option coupled to either manual or automatic transmissions later in the 1960's. Often it was used with Ramblers which had a console-mounted gearshift. I've seen it on both Marlins and hot-rod Americans. There was a separate shift lever in the console next to the transmission shift lever. Even later, in the last generation of Dodge Colts, which looked like AMC Pacers but were built by Chrysler-Mitsubishi's Hyundai sister company in South Korea, they had a twin-stick transmission which acted as an overdrive but actually operated by changing the final drive ratio giving the cars a little help accelerating in a lower gear. , creating a launch gear. It was fully synchronized and could be shifted at any speed. Did this suedo-Hudson have the optional overdrive?
Thank you so much for sharing all of that insight and information I always appreciate it when you share all the transmission specifications because that’s a lot of information I can’t find and it’s super confusing with the hydra Matics during this era. The advertising said it was a flash away the owner said it was a Jetaway and the owner is one of the biggest Hudson parts people around. So it was confusing but he told me that it’s a four-speed unit. It has overdrive built into the transmission.. It was super confusing so I figured I would say both
@@P_RO_ Columbia made 2-speed rear axles. They didn't make an OD unit which fit behind the transmission. After 1941, the Columbia rear end was gone. Nash and Rambler used the BW OD units for many years and as I stated with the Pacers, they started using the Girling/Laycock planetary electric OP units, like the British cars and Volvo. I had a friend in High School who had a 1965 or 66 Rebel coupe withe the squared-off Rambler Classic body.. It had the sports roof, T-10 4-speed and the 287 2-barrel V8. It had bucket seats and a console. Looking at pictures, a lady that I worked for had a Rambler Rogue, which had bucket seats with an automatic and twin-stick console. I'm not sure which engine it had, but Rambler was famous for making a car all show and no go. The Rogues were built on the 60's rounded body American chassis. Just like the SC/Rambler(which first had a high-output 327 V8.
@@danielulz1640 Of course. Only GM and Rolls-Royce(through 1967) manufactured the Hydra-Matic. GM sold it to any car maker that wanted it, with Nash probably being less prestigious to use it.
My father worked for Jim Moran, whose dealership, Courtesy Motors in Chicago sold a very large number of Hudsons. Shortly before Moran switched to selling Fords, the chairman of Hudson offered him the job of Hudson president. Turning the job down, Moran said not only was he making more money as a very successful dealer, he said he believed Hudson could not be saved. After leaving Chicago in late 1967, Moran eventually became a billionaire working for Toyota.
Yup What’s crazier yet is this was the last the very last Hudson hornet ever made so it has all the options the only thing it doesn’t have is it doesn’t have the tri-colored paint scheme that a lot of them had The owner was telling me that the very first car was all white in the very last car was all black

Another great year of my birth car loved the 57 Hudson & Nash, they are flashy and colorful, they went out in style, and the Nash had neat tail and backup lights, Hudson the grille. Liked the 55 Hudson dash. First pick the 57 Rebel the second, the 57Hornet hardtop. Nice ride with the owner .

The 1957 did have a flatter roof profile according to the Hudson intro film. If you look at them side by side the 1957 was about an 1" lower in the center. The side window profile was the same on all three years.
That was something I totally forgot to mention is the offer two different roof sizes I guess in 56 it was 2 inches taller than in 57 and they also change the wheel size it route 15 inch wheels and 56 and 57 they went back to 14s giving it a lower profile.. The owner is huge in the Hudson community and he gave me all that information.
Big spacious practical car It would be a good car for the family to take to car shows there wasn’t that much space to get in the back but it really wasn’t that bad.. I got back there twice lol
Hi Jay!: What a GREAT car! I always liked the Nash/Hudsons! The 1957 in particular. It's nice to know it had that great 327 in it! Frank Spring was a pretty fair designer. He was behind the Hudson Italia, one of the coolest cars of the 1950's. Hudson was seriously thinking of carrying over the Italia designs for their 1955 line until they were bought by Nash/AMC. There was at least one prototype 4 door built with the Italia front and rear end design incorporated. Anyway, REALLY like that '57! Part of the reason that these great little cars didn't sell as well as expected is that Ford changed the car game in 1957. The Fairlane 500 brought the longer, lower, wider design to American automobiles, and beat out even the 1957 Chevy in sales. Any cars that were not at least somewhat wider and lower were not going to last for 1958. Rambler was a different story as it was an economy car, so to speak, so the styling could be different (read VW beetle, other foreign econo cars, and the soon to come Studebaker Lark). You are killing me on the WYR's this time, as I can't pick the 1957 Hudson, which I REALLY like. But it's got to be Studebaker Golden Hawk for #1, despite not being as fast as the Hudson, but THAT DESIGN!! #2 Going with the 1951 Hornet, the 1954 car was kind of nice. and they sort of got rid of the earlier look, but it's kind of fussy.

The dash had the heater controls, and it said "air conditioner" too...but I did not see a compressor under the hood...maybe that meant the car only had vents for air conditioning?!!
Interesting how different the '55 is from the '56/'57, yet has the same roof, doors, front fenders and hood. Just the trim and paint being tweaked makes such a difference. That glove box/drawer is awesome! I wonder how that never became a thing with the industry as a whole! Camping... haha... right... that's what my parent's called it (wink wink)... AMC/Nash/Hudson were such under-rated cars. Too bad they didn't make it. Glad you dig this episode I’m with you I totally dig a glove box drawer it’s an outside the box approach to the situation and if you know me I’m going outside the box kind of guy you probably could’ve put two of those cameras in that it was deep. Great choices too I had to take a second look at the 56 because I was under the impression that they change the front end but they left the rear end the same and that wasn’t true they did change it that’s why we compared all three Super underrated car
@@What.its.like.57 Hudson and Nash have a flatter, less crowned roof than 55 and 56. That, and the switch to fourteen inch wheels, lowered the car's height by nearly three inches. With that exception, 56 and 57 Hudsons have the same sheet metal. The fins are bolt on over the 56 quarter panels which are virtually the same as 55. The 56 has a taller taillight bezel which connects to a lower, shorter chrome fin on top of the 55 quarter panel. Pretty clever restyling when you can't afford new sheet metal.
Only a few over 4000 Hornets built in 57. How many Nash Ambassadors rolled off the lines (non-Ramblers)? I think they were overall better looking given the stacked quad lights and fully open front wheel weeks. But in 55 the Hornets were definitely better stylewise. Maybe the 57 Hornets would have benefitted from a return to body color headlamp bezels and the deletion of those fendertop pieces.
I learnt two things today that I didn't know before, and I know quite a bit about those old Hudsons. The first is that I had always thought that the few '57 Hudsons that were sold that year were merely leftover '56 models but they actually went through some minor styling changes so that the two models are not indistinguishable from one another. And the second one is that '57 was a real speed demon with that 327 Rambler Rebel engine packed inside of it. As for WYR: I would take that '51 Hudson Hornet by a mile. One of my all time favs. The rest of them don't appeal to me much. The '57 Hudson may well have been a powerhouse on the road but I don't care much for its design, and neither did the buying public evidently with only around 4,000 units sold. That is quite a steep drop from eight years before when the company sold around 160,000 of their step-down models. For the Hudson Motor Car Company, those were definitely the good old days!
8176morgan: You've got to like the fantastic performance of the 327 AMC V8! Hudsons and Nashes with that engine no doubt would leave many cars in the dust from traffic light standstarts . They'd probably outdrag Cadillacs and Lincolns as well as many others.
How did you like that car. I got to review a coupe this year I really liked it.. 51 is my favorite year for the hornet I saw one but I didn’t get a chance to cover it I covered a bunch of other stuff at that location I might go back to that location when the weather gets crappy

I think the only other US manufacturer to off that in the late 50's was Cadillac. WYR 1. Studebaker Hawk 2. A 54 Hornet.

Thanks Jay, I have to say that this is one of the most beautiful cars of the 50's. It must have cost a fortune in development, all those wonderful lines. True it may not be a real beauty but Hudson were really sticking it to the big three. Compare it to a 57 Chevrolet and I know which one I would have. I would have picked this in both scenarios until I seen that gorgeous 51 Hudson. One of the most impressive cars I have ever seen. I have to say your show keeps getting better.

A '57 Chevy was my first car(back when they were affordable), so I will always love the '57 Chevy...and the '57 Hudson is a "Jazzy" looking car, not bad at all as far as I am concerned...and would love to own one...but, if I could have ANY '57 model car?..it's a '57 DeSoto Golden Adventurer for me.... :)

Hi Jay..another epic video of an epic automobile. I've always gotten a chuckle looking at Infinity's logo, which is a reduced, carbon-copy of the Hudson Italia's grille. Nash also had an 'N' on the gas door, and the same door opener. I'll wager the 'fin' is a bolt-on similar to the 1958 Packard.

I've always been intrigued by 57 Hudsons. Not sue I'd want to own one, but probably would take the plunge if a good one was found and I had the space to property garage it. I'd want one with stick, probably very hard to find.I believe stick shift models had the starter button under the clutch pedal. You certainly wouldn't want to lose that gas cap!
The Hudson appears very rugged. Many stamped in body shapes adds strength. That 327 engine is a masterpiece! The top and glass looks similar to a Studebaker President Classic. Great car but I personally find that it looks a little awkward. As if it was designed by committee and not smoothed out. This car is to big for 14" rims. Great video!!
I’d take the Hudson over the other AMC cars and it’s a tie between the 51 and 57. That 57 is beautiful and exactly the 50’s car I’d love to have. The other would be a 57 Century Riviera or the 57 Oldsmobile Super 88.
The 57 Hudson Hornet was not a "sister car" to the Rambler Rebel. It was essentially a Nash Ambassador with even more gaudy trim than the Nash. The Rebel was a completely different, much lighter car that would leave the Hudson kin the dust.
I want to more than anything find a rambler rebel owner that would want to run against a Corvette and all of the cars that were said to be king of the hill.. I think they only made 1500 of those cars I have no idea how many survive
I had a '56 Rambler (same body as the '57) that I put on a Chevy Malibu frame and I went through several different ideas, from a 350 Olds to a 350 Pontiac with a Muncie 4-speed. after 30 years I lost my shop and had to let it go. It was obvious I was never gonna finish it anyway. I'm getting old. I still have the Muncie.@@What.its.like.
@@What.its.like. That Rebel was the first car with electronic fuel injection, and that version was the fastest car that year. You could order it, but all the 'private-owned' care were eventually switched back to carburetors as they couldn't make the injection work reliably. The factory did field a car for drag racing. It beat the Vette's fastest times and beat them heads-up on match races, but they never ran at sanctioned events. That car disappeared and nobody knows where it went but but too was believed to have been switched to a carb and possibly sold the public. The Rebel was also the first "muscle car"; it had a performance V8 in an intermediate body, dual exhausts, raised gearing in the rear end, and a 4-speed manual gearbox (which was actually a 3-speed w/ overdrive), and was marketed for it's performance. I’d never really paid much attention to the hornets other than the step down models and I think the 51 is the best looking so id choose that one but the 57 really seems like a great car had I been around back then I definitely would have bought on of those over a ford or chevy. I always looked at the Hudson’s as a more upmarket car than a mercury or Oldsmobile my grandfather had a 54 and he kept it until he passed in 1970 and all the uncle’s wanted so grandma sold it to a stranger to end the dispute 😂

the hudson shown here has a lot of the options that are on my 59 AMC. have a 327 3speed w/od. years ago i got it up to 135 mph. matched a new 280 z. my back seat was full of crap and the trunk had a lawnmower having out the back. car presently has 489k miles on it. I heard that hudson designed that 327 that AMC used on their bigger cars. Now they are both gone.

Me being 53 Hornet owner these aren't bad, I like these, but to me they can't beat the original Stepdown design. Though it has to be said, they beat them in two departments the folding seats and optional factory air. There is intresting enough without the power brakes this actually has one piece of DNA from the old Hudson Motor Car Company, the Triple Safe Brakes. Out of the three model years the 55 has the most Hudson DNA the steering wheel and instrument panel is from the 54's as is the rocket emblem and exterior name script. The front end and hupcapes are actually from Hudson's 55 Stepdown proposal.
@@What.its.like. Yeah it's really awesome. Always brings attention wherever she goes and most of the time is the highlight of any show or meet, still amazing what is a 1948 design was still lower than most 53 cars.

Interesting, rare car. I like that slide-out glove box, the roomy back seat, the seats that turn into beds. I know it's not a real Hudson, but still... For WYR I guess I'd pick the '57 Studebaker Golden Hawk and the '51 Hudson.
Great choices.. I love the seats folding into a bed feature it’s one of my favorite AMC features which originally started as a Nash feature I’ll have to figure out when it started I’ve heard different things

57 Hawk 51 Hornet (my birth year) I think that car is nice but I honestly don't like the styling on the grille it's a little bit too busy for my taste. Really love that interior though it's really stylish and there's plenty of room in there.
With the introduction of the 1957 Chrysler and Ford products it was obvious to everyone that a new era had begun. Hudsons were obvioslly facelifted Nashes, based on a body from the early fifties. All the trim and added fins were lipstick on a pig, no matter how good the car actually was. Nashes and Hudsons were relics of an earlier period. Just the dashboard design is obviously completely outdated.
...the 1957 "Hash" Hornet was interesting, but I'd go with the last of the real, step-down design Hudson Hornets - which were built at the Hudson Motor Car Company plant on E. Jefferson in Detroit, MI - make mine a 1954 Hudson Hornet Hollywood Hardtop with Twin-H Power on that big Hudson inline 6 cylinder engine!

@Alan-Iv9rw: The Hornet name lives on in Dodge's New compact car recently debuted. The 327V8 was absolutely no slouch at all. The 57 Hudsons and Nashes with this engine most likely left allot of cars in the dust from stoplight stand starts. They probably even out dragged Cadillacs and Lincolns from a stand start being somewhat lighter weight cars.
I saw that and I was like man that would’ve been awesome to be with there with those two I’ve watched Ed’s car reviews for the longest time I had no idea he came over here until that happened he probably doesn’t even know my channel exist same thing with Adam.. i’m up for collaborating with anybody If you know me I’m just a regular guy =) That’s why I tell people where I’m going to be different shows so that we could get together and hang out anybody that’s watching I’ll be going to Hershey in October I’m going for all three days.. i’ve met a ton of great people in the car hobby from doing this channel =)
The knobs that retain the valve covers were taken straight from the 2 stroke Detroit Diesels! The engine sounds awesome! The styling is 🤮🤮🤮 what a homely car. But that motor sounds total BAD ASS!! ‘MURICA!!!
