The ratio is much higher for old steering boxes, so it really is much easier to turn than steering intended for power assist....you just have to turn it more for the same effect. And if the vehicle is moving, even a little, that also makes it easier.

Riley, remember the truck fire out on the highway a while back? If you and your dad think you will be ok to let this KW truck stand with a load of water on it, then don't let too much time pass before you fix it up to use as a makeshift fire truck. There are lots of things around the ranch that can catch fire and your local fire department is a long distance away. Get some fire hose of both 1.5 inch and 1inch diameter and fog (spray) nozzles for both. The red plastic ones are just fine for starters. Then make sure you have the proper connectors to hook the hoses to the pump. Then practice hooking them up and using them. Your local fire department might help you to find those things, and make other suggestions. Rig a place to keep those and other tools ON THE TRUCK. Always keep those things ON THE TRUCK! Don't ever "borrow" them to do anything else somewhere or sure as shootin' they won't be there when there is a fire! Good luck.
@scotty2307
@scotty2307 Год назад
I think the shutdown valve may be a decompression valve. The round red flag thing hanging in front of the steering wheel is a low air pressure warning. After starting, and building air pressure, flip the flag up to the left. If it stays up, you have enough pressure to operate the breaks at least. If the flag will not stay up, not enough pressure to drive the truck. If it drops in front of your face while you are driving, pull over and stop immediately because you are losing all of your air.

The red stop arm hanging down in your view will drop down to alert you of low air pressure while driving...after you have the truck running and air builds up, you flip that flag up to the left to reset it for driving, if it drops down while driving you have low or no air pressure. That air shut down valve, I believe is the PASS (Positive Air Shut-Off System) valve. It cuts off the air supply to the engine from what I can find. What is the tractor protection valve on a CDL? Tractor Protection Valve | CDL Air Brake Valves | CDL Air ... The tractor protection valve is comparable to a sentry. It monitors air pressure in the trailer. If the tractor protection valve detects catastrophic air loss in the trailer, it tells the trailer air supply valve to shut off air to the trailer. The trailer air supply valve turns air on and off to the trailer. The tractor protection valve shuts off the air supply to the trailer, in the event of a major air leak on a trailer, it'll stop the tractor from sending air to the trailer to maintain the brakes on the tractor...you'll have diminished braking power as the tractor would be doing 100% of the braking at that point, but it'll allow you to continue driving to a safe location for repairs.

Yrs ago I drove a truck with 2 transmissions. The gear shift with reverse is the main transmission. The other gear shift is the spitter. Ram that transmission is the mechanical version or a 13 speed, 15 speed. I think emergency shut off is to stop a run away engine before it blows up. Detroit diesel use to have them. It took a mechanic to set it back rite.
@glennwhite7906
@glennwhite7906 Год назад
Because of the prior use of this truck as a support vehicle for a crop-dusting operation, make sure the "water" tank does not contain any residual deadly chemicals. Also for a truck this age, and unless you are sure of any recent engine and transmission service, the engine and transmission oil should be drained and replaced with new and appropriate oils. All the oil filters and air filters should be replaced. Also the radiator should be drained and the water, with the appropriate amount of antifreeze should be replaced. Doing just a little tweaking and maintenance should make this this truck a good water truck for quite a few years. PS: Don't forget to service the Honda pump engine, it will also need an oil change with new filters for the oil and air intake. This gives you another great opportunity to have Riley help you and get more good instructions and experience.

You also use that compression handle when it is cold weather. You pull the handle and get the engine spinning over real fast then push the compression release valve in and engine will start quicker. I think your engine is most likely a 262 Cummins. Might be a 250 also.

The engine in the truck is most likely an NTO 220. The lever with the pull cable in the cab that you thought is the kill is actually a compression release for cold starting. Pull it get the engine spinning and push it back in. As far as shut down it's a electric solenoid top of the fuel pump. If it doesn't shut off with the key the manual override screw is most likely turned in.
@henrymichaelwilson8107
@henrymichaelwilson8107 Год назад
Has it got a fuel pump on the engine. If so the stop cable will be on it. It may have a decompresser valve on the top of the engine. That's a shaft that runs through the rocker cover. It's just for cold starting. So don't worry about that.

Truck tractor protection valve is to shut off trailer air in the event of a hose failure so the tractor doesn't lose air. Emergency means only the tractor gets air. Totally manual on a rig this old, it won't happen automatically. Also may be irrelevant to your configuration, unless there's air fittings back there for a towed trailer. 1957 is the year I was born, incidentally.

The shut off valve must be a compression release...the tractor protection valve is just the trailer air..back then there was only spring brakes on one drive axle & none on the trailers...no steer axle brakes either...the air tank on the trailer would apply brakes to the trailer if the supply line was interrupted, or broke & that valve would pop off to the emergency position & keep the tractor from loosing air as well....as long as the trailer was disconnected and the air tank would hold air, the trailer brakes would remain engaged, as the air bled off...usually a day or two...then the trailer wheels would free roll... Some history for you!!

The stop sign above the steering wheel should lift out of the way when you get enough air pressure . You will also need to check but I'm guessing it will be a positive ground a little tricky when jump starting. Shutdown valve is the engine kill valve that is the “t” handle left of the steering wheel. It must be left in the kill “pulled” position when the engine is not running. This cuts off the fuel. If left on in the “pushed” it can allow fuel to flood the engine. If you pull the shutdown and push it back in before the engine stops running it can cause issues with extra fuel and then cause the engine to miss fire.
