My Grandparents are in the International truck at 9:59 in this video. Peter and Mazie Kuzyk. I am almost certain it is my father in the back of the truck with the gals. Harvy Kuzyk.
2:25 - City Centre, looking north past Highway 37 towards the hill on which the upper part of the town is located. 2:39 - City Centre continued; the big blocky building was The Bay (Hudson's Bay Company store) and is now Trigo's (a clothing/footwear store). It can be seen again around 3:40-3:53. The storefronts seen beside it are half of the current City Centre Mall (an addition was built in front of them). 4:12 - Whitesail Construction - not entirely sure where this building was located, but Whitesail is the name of the northernmost neighbourhood within Kitimat proper (not counting a subdivision up in the woods called Cable Car). 4:21 - probably the highway between Kitimat and Terrace. 4:37 - not 100% sure, but might be the Chalet Restaurant, or a building that was on the current site of Rosario's Restaurant. 4:52 - Legion Hall, Remembrance Day service outside of Legion 5:56 - heading west on the other side of the Kitimat River, in the area that's now called Service Center. Building at 6:14 is the (former) Kitimat Hotel. 6:55 - 8:16 all seems to be down on the west side of Douglas Channel, southwest of the current town probably at or near Hospital Beach, near the old Alcan Smeltersite/current Rio Tinto docks. 8:37 - probably Highway 37 between Kitimat and Terrace. 9:14 - Lakelse Hot Springs, at Lakelse Lake, between Kitimat and Terrace. 9:47 or so is probably Lakelse Lake itself.
I remember that 1972 snow storm . Our family lived in Terrace , 36 miles from Kitimat. It snowed that Friday well into Saturday. It shut down the communities for days but made great conditions for kids to build snow forts all weekend . Bummer they didn’t show the old ice rink where us kids from Terrace travel one week a year to attend hockey school until Terrace built a rink in town.
My Auntie Anne Applegarth and Uncle Ozzy Osadiuk would have met and started a family in Kitamat around this time. My Mom's Family, Applegarth have alot of history in Vancouver, Kitamat, Grand Forks, Christina Lake............ BC is such an anomaly to me.
Six minute mark is looking towards the train station and the Kitimat Hotel (not certain of the name, but it was a hotel. We stayed there when we arrived in '57)
Hi @CanadaMotorSports / Reel Life, great film! Glad to see I'm not the only one who has collected old footage of Kitimat. I have a lot of old 8mm film on my channel if you want to check it out, most of it is from B.C., but some of it is from Denmark. I have more to upload too, it's just a matter of finding time to transfer it all lol Cheers :)
l think that is now known as City Centre & it's looking from where the fountain now is 'down town'. The big building on the left was the Hudsons Bay store.
