Made by Kendall Motor Oil, COMPETITION DRIVER is a rare 1958 movie for and about people who love cars and racing. You'll see some great vintage types in the film including foreign makes like Jaguars, Sprites, Maserati, Ferrari, and Formula 1 Coopers, Corvettes and so on, going through their paces at Watkins Glen. There are shots in the pits, shots on the racetrack, and spectacular car accidents, spin outs. It really takes you inside the world of the track! See what happens before the races, watch the tiny over looked details of what happens during and the triumphant after race events.
The 1958 race was won by Ed Crawford in the 61 Jaguar with Walt Hansgen in the 60 Jaguar right behind. Race details are at:www.racingsportscars.com/photo...
At the 4 minute mark, the Concours d'Elegance is seen, with vintage cars recapturing a moment of glory.
There is huge emphasis on the skill required to succeed in this sport, maneuvering through a chicane and calculating the speed for the records.
Great film with wonderful shots of beautiful vintage racers with an inside look of 1950s race culture.
Watkins Glen International (nicknamed "The Glen") is an automobile race track located in Watkins Glen, New York, at the southern tip of Seneca Lake. It was long known around the world as the home of the Formula One United States Grand Prix, which it hosted for twenty consecutive years (1961-1980), but the site has been home to road racing of nearly every class, including the World Sportscar Championship, Trans-Am, Can-Am, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the International Motor Sports Association and the IndyCar Series.
Initially, public roads in the village were used for the race course. In 1956 a permanent circuit for the race was built. In 1968 the race was extended to six hours, becoming the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen. The circuit's current layout has more or less been the same since 1971, although a chicane was installed at the uphill Esses in 1975 to slow cars through these corners, where there was a fatality during practice at the 1973 United States Grand Prix. The chicane was removed in 1985, but another chicane called the "Inner Loop" was installed in 1992 after a fatal accident during the previous year's NASCAR Winston Cup event.
The circuit is known as the Mecca of North American road racing and is a very popular venue among fans and drivers. The facility is currently owned by International Speedway Corporation.

This film features my Dad and his Elva. He was 23 years old in this film. He raced the car in Sebring and celebrated the 50th Anniversary of racing there in 2008.

My first race at 5 years old. My Dad held me on the snow fence at turn one. We were Porsche people and were rooting for Bob Holbert but the Listers were just too fast.

This is a color faded film. We did our best to restore it but -- unfortunately -- without some serious time in color software this is what you end up with.
