1958 Plymouth Belvedere “Christine” by AMT - Episode 41

Today on the WorkBench, I am building the infamous “Christine” 1958 Plymouth Belvedere. I’ve heard some people refer to this car as the Plymouth Fury. For this particular build, and because the body is labeled as a Belvedere, it will be a Belvedere.
This is the first multi-colored paint job that I have done in many years. I think that it turned out really well. After the primer was laid down the roof was next. I sprayed that with Touch N Tone Gloss White. Then the silver stripe down the side was next. For that I used Krylon Short Cuts “Chrome”. Next up was the Krylon Red Pepper for the main body color. After that gassed out for 24 hours, I laid down Colorshot Gloss Clear as the topcoat, which failed miserably. I’ve used this combination in the past with zero problems but this time it didn’t work out. I guess that it’s Christine doing Christine things.
This has been a fun and easy build that looks fantastic! If you get the chance to build this car, I highly recommend it!

Thanks! This one almost made it to the never to be finished shelf. I would lay down the paint perfectly and then the clear would eat it. This happened three times with three different clears. On the fourth (and final) time I used Future Floor Polish for the clear. I wasn't going to repaint this car ever again due to the clear eating the paint. Took me almost six weeks to finish it because of the paint issues. I did shelve it for three weeks of that time out of frustration with the paint.

Man that turned out really good. I’ve built this kit before and really enjoyed it. Someday I would like to build one in the factory color Buckskin Beige. That was the only color available for that year I believe.

I actually have an old AMT/ERTL 1958 Belvedere in my stash. It's not the "Christine" edition. It's a 2002 edition of the kit. I'm sure that the only differences between the two are the decals and the box art. So, I have an opportunity to make this car again in a more traditional color scheme. Kind of looking forward to that...

This build went together really smoothly. I had problems with the paint and clear coats to the point that it delayed the video release for almost a month. Nothing bad about the kit itself, it was all on me and my clear coat choices. Good luck on your build! I hope it turns out great for you! Thanks for watching.

Good job, though I would have painted the engine to be a Golden Commando, but pro tip: Dip your glass into future, not only does it seal them and prevent yellowing, but it makes the plastic look like glass, and stops them from fogging with glues. I saw you had a small bottle marked future. So you do know about the old master trick...shame it got so expensive and discontinued. I'm sure we'll find another substitute. Just glad I bought 4 bottles of the stuff. Also, after you apply the future for your shine, to tone it back some or a wax real car look, use a tide or Downey or bounce dryer sheet. The dyer sheets used to stop static. It makes the car look waxed. Try these on a cheap car model to see how you like them before you try them on a model that's expensive or you really care about, I'd hate to offer advice and then you or others try on a cared for or expensive model and don't like it, don't want to be responsible for that. Also, I'm glad you called it a Belvedere, most people think Christine was a Fury, but no she was a Belvedere coupe with the fury trim, which would have given you anodized gold accents through out the car which were all options you could place leave on or leave off: Center Gold Hubs, Center steering wheel hub Gold, Front Grill gold anodized, Side Hockey Stick Trim gold anodized, and Gold Fury Badging for the Trim level. This badging also didn't help with the confusion. Because of the confusion of the badging, folks (I'll get into in a sec), and sales, Plymouth had Exner, (the Designer of the Belvedere) to design a Fury for the fall of 1959- and new 1960 model year line up. Which is why the Fury looked different from the Belvedere. This usually sparks a big argument among the fans but, that's why She looked like a Belvedere.... because she was one. Also if you go to a car search engine for new or used cars like cars guru or classic cars and search Plymouth Fury and then look in the years, the first year you can search is 1959 and up, no 1958. Because there was no 1958 Plymouth Fury. But people would buy the Belvedere an already popular car and being a two door folks would ask (joking example here) "What a beautiful car Margie, what kind is it!?" and Margie would tell her friend Linda with a smile and say, "Why Linda it's a 1958 Plymouth Fury!"...lol Linda would go into a Plymouth dealership and ask to see a '59 Fury, and the sales guy would scratch his head in confusion and offer her a Belvedere coupe with the Fury trim option....this was of course all made worse when as I said Plymouth made the Fury in '59 and '60 and up. Anyway, I'm sure someone will reply to me that I'm wrong, but before you do, please understand I'm not a bad guy, lol it's just a fact people messed up on, and try using a car search engine like ones I mentioned see for yourself first that you can't search for a 58 Plymouth Fury. Do some research like I did, and I got corrected by an old timer who had one at a car show. I said Nice 58 Plymouth Fury, he said thank you, but it's a Belvedere with the Fury trim. He walked me through it all as I have here. Anyway, despite the paint troubles you had I think you did a great job on it. We tend to be our own worst critics.

Thank you for the great comment. It is very educational. I knew about the Belvedere/Fury confusion from a story that my father had told me long ago. As far as the engine color goes, I couldn't remember what the colors were, and the only reference photos that I could find were on a Google search. I suspected that they were possibly incorrect but went the average color scheme that I could find. As this particular model year was only very slightly ahead of my time, I was not privy to all of the intricacies but was aware of some of them. Great video and a nice job on what is really a pretty bad kit. Not up to AMT's usual standards. The real 'Christine' was supposed to be a Fury, the kit is a Belvedere with some Fury trim. It does not go together well at all, the exhaust is particularly tricky and some of the parts in my kit were warped pretty bad. The engine is a real mess, seems to be part 350 B block (correct for a Fury) and part 318 A block (correct for a Belvedere). The distributor should be in front and it should have twin carbs and chrome air cleaners (as others have noticed).

Thank you! There has been a lot of discussion about this kit and its inaccuracies between the movie car and the model kit. I believe that this kit began life as the 1958 Belevedere and AMT threw it in a box labelled "Christine" after the movie came out. In the movie the car was a Fury and the Fury shared the same basic body as the Belevedere. Like the differences between the Chevy Impala and Caprice, same body, different trim levels, different engine options etc. I think that AMT believed the average person wouldn't notice the differences between the trim levels and engines, as the cars were very similar looking. It has been years since I had watched the movie and at first didn't catch the differences. Thanks for the great comment!

I don't know why it's known as a Plymouth fury. Because the Plymouth fury slammer looks totally different in the front. But I've seen other 1958s different colors with fury on the box. Kinda hard to really recognize.

The 1958 Belvedere and the Fury shared many body panels as the Fury was a sub-model of the Belvedere. There were slight trim differences both inside and out as well as available color choices for each. So, because of these slight differences, it is easy to get the two confused. The same thing has happened amongst other car manufacturers. Take, for example, the Chevrolet Impala, Belair, and Caprice. All three of these models were the exact same body with subtle differences with options, tail lights and trim pieces. Another example were the Fords in the same era. Between the Ford Custom, Galaxie 500, and the Galaxie 500XL. Same basic structure, different trim levels. Getting back to the Plymouth... ChryCo didn't do anyone any favors by mixing and matching car bodies and name plates. I think the reason that people get the two confused might be because the Fury was a bit more luxurious or had better performance than the Belvedere. Of course, the Belvedere, like the Fury nameplate would come and go up into the mid 1980's with the last Fury rolling off of the assembly line in 1989. The last of the Belvedere's rolled off the assembly line in 1970. I don't have the slammers version of the 58 Fury but I do have this "Christine" kit as well as the plain Jane 58 Belvedere, both from AMT. Both kits sport almost the same box art lending to the confusion. So, in closing, I think that AMT is responsible for a lot of the confusion in the modeling world by using the same molds for all things 1958 Plymouth. Including the bodies for the Belvedere and the Fury. Thanks for watching!

Thank You. Without knowing what your current level of experience is, I would say that this is a fairly easy kit to build. The hardest part about building this is doing the three color paint job and doing all of the Bare Metal Foil work. However, if you do not have experience with using Bare Metal Foil, you could use a Molotow chrome pen, Silver Sharpie, or just regular ole' silver paint. When doing the different shades of paint, I recommend using either Tamiya or Washi tape as the first dividing line barrier because they seal down really well. After that you can use regular ole' painters tape and a paper towel. Allow at least 24 hours between color changes so that the paint has had time to cure. Otherwise you might pull up the previous paint color. The three colors that I used was Touch N Tone Gloss White on the roof. Krylon short cuts Gloss Silver for the side striping, and Krylon Gloss Red Pepper for the main body. All three of those were applied over a coat of Touch N Tone gray primer. This is true. I built this "box stock" as I do for almost all of my videos. It came with what you see in the video. I believe that this kit is solely based on the 1958 Belvedere kit with different box art and a different decal sheet. They didn't provide a correct intake manifold and carbs for the Christine car.

Thank You! The paint that was used in this build was the same throughout. It was the clear coat that I was attempting to use that caused all of the problems. I used Krylon Gloss Red Pepper, Krylon Short Cuts Chrome and Touch N Tone Gloss White. I used Mod Podge Gloss acrylic sealer and had my first reaction. Stripped the body and started over. The second time I used Colorshot Gloss Clear, which was another mistake. However, I did use the Colorshot clear over the Red Pepper on a previous project with zero issues, so I thought that I was safe. Turns out I was incorrect. I tested these combinations on spoons and had no reactions but when I sprayed the body, Kaboom! On the third attempt I just went with Pledge Floor polish for the clear. This kit was put back on the shelf for about two months after the second reaction. I had spent so much time with it at that point that I was just fed up with it. When I got back to it I wasn't willing to take anymore chances with the paint. The paint was the only thing that was holding this build up and I just wanted to finish it. I say that it was Christine doing Christine things now. She just didn't want to be all shiny and new looking, that is until I forced her to be... I have this kit in the stash, nice to see what is it. Mine is molded in "RED!" All of that brush painting is very tedious, been there done that. I like the trim work on the rims, will be doing that as well. Very nice work on the kit. That is very curious as to "why" the choice decal? Thank You for sharing with Us here on the tube. Later

Thank You! I wish that kit manufacturers would discontinue the use of red plastic. Especially when to achieve this particular body paint scheme you have to apply white paint to some areas. The red plastic always turns any white paint applied to it pink. I am currently working on a Coca-Cola vehicle that I wanted to do in a red/white scheme and it is molded in red also. It can be very frustrating to get the white to remain white in these situations. Thanks for watching and good luck with your "Christine" build.

Thank You! As far as the video production goes I am self taught. I don't have all of the fancy tricks down yet but I experiment here and there to try out new things to improve on the final video. With the software I use (Corel VideoStudio Pro 2020), I can easily adjust speed by percentage points. For most of the building and painting sequences, I usually bump the speed up around 250-300% of the original. I regularly have 3.5 to 4 hours of footage that I cut down to 35-40 minutes using this option. Lately, I have been forgetting to use my boom microphone and I have noticed a difference in my audio quality. I hope that this answers your great question. I have only been doing video editing for just a hair over a year and I am learning new things along the way. My earlier attempts at making videos weren't bad but you can tell the difference between then and now.

Thank You! As far as fitment issues... No, not really. The side windows were a bit fiddly to get into place but they fit. It was just a weird angle to get them into place. The attachment points on the front bumper could have used a little beefier connection point but did align properly. Other than that nothing horrible on this particular build as far as warp or something out of proportion that I noticed. The only real problems I had with this kit had nothing to do with the kit itself. It was just poor choices of clear coats that reacted to the paint and that was totally on me. I have a couple of pictures of the starter location that I can forward to you through email, if you want ( send an email to scaleautoguy@gmail.com and I can forward the pictures to you ). Basically, the starter is located on the left side (what would be the drivers side) of the engine, right in front of the transmission. There is a little angled or flat piece that sticks out in that corner and a corresponding slot in the side of the starter, the starter mounts to that piece inside of the slot on the starter. I hope this helps you out.

How do you get the craft paint to lay down so nicely? I try it and its all gloopy.

Thanks for the great question! I am guessing that you're referring to when I brush with craft paint? Well, first off I shake the bottle for about 30-45 seconds before using it, every time that I use it. I also don't use a heavy amount on the brush. I often times will do a second or third coat if necessary. The only bottle that I have in my collection that I can get away with one coat every time is the flat black. For some reason that always covers in one coat. Also, as you have seen in the video, I put a base primer coat down on every part so that the topcoat paints has something to attach to. Sometimes age can affect craft paint, let's say something that is over 3 years old and that can cause glooping or a grainy rough surface when it has dried. Now, when I airbrush with craft paint I make sure that the paint is mixed well in the bottle by shaking the bottle for up to about a minute. I then put some in my airbrush bottle and thin it down about 60/40 or even 50/50 depending on how thick the paint is. I spray it using a 3 - 5 mm nozzle at about 19psi. I generally stick to Folk Art and DecoArt brands but I will also use other brands if it is a color that I am looking for. So, I mostly go for the color and not so much the brand or gloss, matte, or flat per se. If it's a gloss paint, I consider that a bonus but it doesn't matter much because I can make it glossy if it needs to be by applying a gloss clear coat. So, experiment with it here and there. Like most things it does take a little time to get the hang of it.

@@shanerollan2256 Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I have not tried the multi surface paints yet but I do use a lot of Folk Art, Apple Barrel, and DecoArt craft paints. I have brushed and airbrushed them all and they do work well if they are applied over a primed surface. They typically don't like being put over bare plastic very well and scratch off easily.

Thank you! I use Mod Podge Dimensional magic #MS11215 for everything from windshield installation to headlight/tail light installations. It dries clear and cleans up with soap and cool water. It can be purchased almost anywhere for around $6.00 or $7.00. This one tube has lasted me over two years now and was previously owned by my daughter where she used it for jewelry making (I commandeered it from her). Mod Podge (made by Plaid) has a plethora of products under the Mod Podge name. They even make a clear sealer spray that doubles as a pretty fair clear coat. Welcome to the hobby!

Luckily for me she sits in her own little cage underneath a Chevy pickup on a shelf in my office/build room. I sleep very well except when the Siamese Cat decides he is cold and wants to lay on my feet. Thanks for the laugh!

That's one way to keep it from moving! This one just about killed me with the paint that wouldn't do the right thing. I painted, stripped and re-painted this car three times before it finally gave in and stopped playing games with me. It now sits in its own little clear plastic cage on a shelf above my workspace. It has its nose right to the edge of the plastic and it's angrily staring at me. All the while trying to escape, but I think that it is afraid of heights. Because the bench top is four feet below it. There are always some sort of discrepancy between kits and there life size counterparts. I built it the way that the kit was designed. What's to say that the movie didn't take some liberties themselves and added the dual quads? Either way, this build turned out nice as it could have, all things considered...

Having just started that. What a horrible quality the cast is. Im also missing parts...... lausiest kit I ve ever seen. Fury and Belvedere were two different cars. Christine was a Fury, not Belvedere, so this kit ef`s up from the start. I sanded Belvedere off.

This kit did have some quirks for sure, but it's not the worst one out there. There are a few that come to mind when I think about lousy kits. Kits like the Firestone Ford pickup and the Coca-Cola 32 Ford Sedan Delivery springs to mind as pretty lousy kits. The thing that gave me the most trouble with this build was the paint, and that had nothing to do with the kit itself and more to do with my clear coat choice. There is much debate whether Christine was a Fury or a Belvedere. They both shared the same basic body panels with slight differences. Like the difference between an Impala and a Caprice. Or a Galaxie 500 and an LTD. I haven't watched the movie in many years and I don't remember what they called the car in the movie or even which engine was in it. Thanks for the great comment!

@@scaleautoguysworkbench Ok bit of debate, hah hah hah, I recon shes a Fury as stated in the book , and besides, if you are gonna write a story like this, Fury is the only appropriate model. Now, I noticed your cast is white ? Mine is red with some studio claim stickers inside.
