A forgotten unloved bus finally gets some love and care!
I've had this bus for about a year and he (Pickle) has waited his turn and so I've decided he is one of the next projects! If you are along for this ride you are along hopefully for the long haul because this bus is bad, like bad bad...hopefully I can turn him around and make something I'm really proud of! #junkinthistruck, #picklethebus, #VWpressedbumper

Teaching your Lil boy about tools and how to do stuff is priceless. He will remember and retain that knowledge all his life. To this day my son remembers stuff I showed him back when he was little.

I was ALWAYS under foot with my dad, and he was ALWAYS patient and willing to teach...my dad taught me to teach, I only hope I can do as good a job with my son as my dad did with me! Thanks for being here!

I think it is amazing that you are teaching your son how to do mechanics. I think that's one thing that is lost in this world today. Everything is gone so technical and computerized everybody is forgotten the blue collar work. Way to go mom

You are amazing. Can’t wait to see what you do with the bus. I love how you teach your son to work with tools. My Mother taught me. When I was a kid, and you saw Dad reach for a tool, you ran quick as you could, and took it away from him before somebody got hurt. LOL. I still love tools and fixing things.

at age 5 I used to go into dads tool box raid the adjustable wrench and take things aprt like bikes and lights and try as I might I could not budge the water spigot outside, he wised up and put a lock on it...............................the car shop was another story.....................

@@marcijunebug Kid looks gifted and very inquisitive and a qwik learner...I was described as LISTLESS in grade school but when dad went to bat and the school gave me and others a more advanced curriculum did we excel and prove the educators in error..............and he spins a MEAN RATCHET TOOO!!!!!!

yes he does! I don't know what people see in that old double cab, but folks just love it! Like I said in your post earlier...I think they can see how much he's loved despite the many imperfections! I really wanted Dad to win that...truly...

thanks! my son named him when we brought the bus home I said "what should we name him?" my son says "we will call him Pickle"..."PICKLE???" I said..."seriously PICKLE?" it stuck...lol kids...gonna need LOTS of luck and more! thanks for watching!

Yeah we always had them moving cars at my parents place...but I thought pickle at least deserved his own set lol...actually once you get them going they are pretty easy to move!

Congrats on your much deserved contest win ... I find it interesting that the cost of maintaining and improving the "toys" that we enjoy is seldom discussed...and it's an overwhelming expense to say the least(not to mention the sweat equity invested too )...you and your local tax assessor-collector must be on a first name basis by now 🤣.. but with your determination (and a stack of $ ) I'm sure Pickle will get the bestest make-over he/she deserves...we'll be cheer'n ya BOTH on along the way.. 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡

I plan to do the "resto" as cheap as possible and do the work myself, which helps a LOT, but yes they aren't cheap but they are FUN and in a way they are therapy! so I guess that expense and time put in pays off in the end! yes the assessor ironically is my neighbor SOOOOOOO there's no hiding anything! thanks for being here!

This will be such a cool project, you may have an edge over CT on rusty. But when i'm able to show more details of the rust damage to my 67 Bondo Condo's frame and driver side frame rail i will be the most rusty crusty frame. CT's frame is in really good shape. Finished my last treament Monday at the hospital go see family doctor today so we can map out a plan on how to get me fully recover and back to work and on weekends having fun on the bus. Your ready to rock & roll or cut & weld now.

yes CT's bus is much worse in certain areas, but his frame is much better than ole pickle...the passenger side of pickle isn't terrible but the driver's side is roached...get yourself well! at least with pickle and with CT's bus you know exactly what you are getting in to,...it's all right there staring back at ya! lol

When I first started trucking I was told to turn the steering wheel the opposite direction that you want the trailer to go but now I pull doubles and its opposite lol.btw I like your project

Jonathan Hicks my grandpa was a truck driver as was my uncle...dad always hauled stuff for various companies on the weekends I guess it’s in my blood😂👍 thanks for watchin’...tons more coming on this old bus, in the process of building a full 360 rotisserie right now, hope to have it on there before thanksgiving!

I still forgot to buy pickles the other day. Actually I forgot my list so a few things didn't make it home like they were supposed to. Those dolly's are such a lifesaver! Your little helper did a great job helping putting them together. 🙂

Marcie is that a early Land Rover I see? My brother had one in the early 70's and since it was a light gray he painted it a zebra stripe which turned out pretty good. I remember in the summer of 74 I hit the windshield with my fist but not to break it and I barely touched it and broke the right side since it was two pieces! I didn't even get a scratch and had to pay him $50 to fix it. We were both surprised how easy it broke! It was very rugged and dependable unlike the expensive new ones. The spare tire was mounted on the hood.

yes it's a 61 series 2a rover with Fairy Overdrive! and I DO have a spare that usually is on the hood, it's a really fun truck, 16 gears forward and 4 gears reverse (with the overdrive) 4 shift levers in total! If you can drive it you can drive anything! my windshield is broke in my rover too! lol funny...I'll do a video on it sometime...I have 3 tops for it...soft truck cab and the hard truck cab that is on it and a complete full top (like a US mail truck)!

@@marcijunebug from what I remember it was a 4 speed and a 2 1/4 liter 4 cylinder engine. Pretty slow but he took it on the beach and it handled snow with no problems. Also not a highway car as it was very noisy, did not ride like a luxury sedan. He had a International Scout, quite a few, and it was much faster and comfortable and rugged.

the rover with the overdrive will run 70-75 on the highway very comfortably...surprising what a difference it makes..yep 4 speed with high and low 4X4 and add the overdrive to all those gears and you get a total of 16!

@@marcijunebug I don't remember but I don't think my brother had OD, I don't recall going over 60. I think the body may have been aluminum but I could be wrong. Since it was at the Jersey shore where the salt air and road salt in the winter would have eaten it alive like the typical steel cars! When I was a kid in the early 60's I saw trucks and cars only a few years old that resembled Swiss cheese. Salt air would even make aluminum pit and have a white powdery residue!

Dave McGuigan yes they are all aluminum body, mine on a galvanized frame too which was a factory option...only thing rusted on mine is door jams and front bulkhead, rest is rock solid...and yes about 60 is the top gearing without overdrive. It was made by fairy and later that company became superwinch, very cool design! I’ll do a video on it for you at some point..very clever how it works

they worked well for what I needed! I've used them many times and never had them kick out, but have had friends that have...I think because everyone warned me about that maybe I was just more careful???? best of luck in all your projects!

Your 5 year old already knows "righty-tighty, lefty-loosey." If he can plug in an OBDII scanner he could be a dealer mechanic. lol There's a channel called "Built Official" and he always involves his kids in his builds.

Marci my question is what plan do you have for a engine restoration? will you keep it stock performance or would whant to tune it for upgrade performance if so pickle would be awesome Marci your bus would rock&roll with great interstate highway speed think about it, pickle will be a bad ass machine down the road One day but Marcijunebug if kept stock I'll respect your decision even better please reply back rock on babe.

I am planning to keep the original 36hp, it seems to be a pretty good running engine and after a compression test and a little more investigation I will determine if/not I do a top end refresh...but it is likely I will just do that so I know I have a good strong running engine when we first start driving it. I have several other engines I could put in it, but for now plan to use the original! I live pretty rural so he won't be on the highway too much and my dad runs a 36hp in his 55 and it has plenty of power and I love driving it...if I want speed I'll buy a different car, but I want the most fun you can have behind the wheel so I buy VW's lol

the landy is a 61 with a Fairy superwinch "overdrive" gearbox! very fun to drive...16 gears forward and 4 gears reverse! I drove it daily several summers ago...fun truck and a major power house!

Id say duckmans Gregory is crustier than yours and eleanore was worse again, CT's just starting to find how difficult these builds can be. Im sure hell get it. I wouldn't know where to start.

yes I'd say Eleanore was worse...CT's bus is worse on the upper areas (rain gutter area as I have no holes there) but it's a toss up as to who's is worse

if you haven't watched the latest video tune in because I'm in the process of building a full 360 rotisserie for the bus out of salvaged cable reels...never done THAT before so it could be an epic fail! either way it'll make for good video 😂

The only thing I didn't like is when you referred to yourself as "fat", I get on my girlfriend when she says it. Marci, I'm sure your hubby is happy with your size, I haven't seen where you got that from. I don't know if a skirt is the best attire for wrenching in, but you do you :-)

lol...old habits die hard I guess...I'll try and do better! The skirt is much cooler on the hot humid Indiana summers. As an avid trail runner of ultra distances (100 miler being my choice distance) I learned that a skirt is the way to go...just don't forget the compression shorts underneath! lol

I'll give you my standard answer..."more than I wanted to pay, but a whole lot less than what it is worth" lol I've just made it a practice to not give prices on cars... I will say this...the day after I bought it, I left it on the trailer and took it to a car show where someone offered me more than I paid...which made me feel pretty good about the investment! It's a '58, which has many one year only features..the deck-lid being one of them...I could sell the deck-lid alone and almost make my $ back! lol thanks for watching...stay tuned, it's gonna be a long road!

Congratulations on Rusty, great job moving Pickle around food for thought next let the air out of the tires to clear the bikes the tires will probably be down for the next time anyways but can't tell you how many times I've had to do that lol. Can't believe how fast Dalton is growing he's a good helper and the bigger and stronger he gets the better for you. Also stop saying your a fat girl you are just fine fat girls typically can't do half of what you do! And that's from a fat guy lol

call it a MOBILE PICKLES..........................is that a 36HP motor? RU going to rebuild or do a Muistie like engine swap but keep the patina and character? A 12volt conversion is a must I say for proper lighting and accessories......................

it IS a 36, we've had it running and it sounds great! I will keep it as original as I can. I'm going back to dove blue and where I have to weld in panels will be "feathered"/blended in with rust and dove blue paint . i.e. "faux-tina" I will keep it 6v, but do like my dad and get a couple of 6->12 V inverter to run additional stuff, they are cheap and work great!

those "aftermarket side windows" are plexi-glass and they are GOING GOING gone as soon as I can get new metal welded in! lol and YES it is going back as original as possible...I want to take the 7 layers of paint off and get down to the dove blue in all the areas that there is still paint left then I will work from there, starting with the frame and working my way up

@@marcijunebug I suggest you lay in a good supply of BON AMI , gloves 0000 steel wool/Scotch Brite pads and some warm weather to do this stripping

@@gertraba4484 YES! the back is almost completely done...and upper driver's side...I'm using goof off (same thing I used for deck lid several videos back) and I found a new one that seems a bit stronger (will be discussed in next video) and it's coming off pretty easy...I'm really surprised

Great videos mate. I too have just taken ownership of an early bus. Mine is 1955ish and was deliverd in a trailer in 100 pieces im taking on the responsibility of bringing it back to life please check out one of my last 2 videos to get a feel of whats happening.

Well it’s a pretty long list of why, but mainly because I want to! It’s a 58, which if you know VW’s you know is a “one year only” for a couple of parts...they call them the “great 58’s” and there is more $ in parts alone than what I paid for the bus...oh AND it runs🤣!!
