It's a shame that Oldsmobile and Mercury are gone. They were two very coveted marques that stood out for GM and Ford.

Love you channel! I’m 60 and this reminds me of my Dad’s 59, 2 door Impala. It was 12 years old when he got it but he loved that car!! Great memories. Pro tip… I used to be a mechanic at a GM dealership. I noticed you using a screwdriver to pry the grease cap off of the front drum. I always liked taking a pair of channel-locks and opening them up wide the put the jaws at 12 and 6 o’clock then give a gentle squeeze and rock the cap up and down an it pops right off. I even had the right snap-on tool for that but preferred the channel-locks. By the way the grease caps proper name is “hub cap”. The things the we all call hub caps are “wheel covers”. Keep up the good work!

Hey Chris just wanted to say thank you for the great videos. I am 17yr. You inspired me to start my own project. I bought a 1996 Ford Ranger for 300$, replaced all the brake lines, new tires replaced the clutch and pressure plate. I should be able to sell it for 2,500$ would not of done this project without your videos! Keep it up!

Brings back so many memories. My mom and dad were in their Pontiac station wagon when they were T-boned and the car was totalled. They needed a new station wagon right away and the Oldsmobile dealer had one. It was a brand new SUPER 88, not a mere Dynamic 88, in white and gold two tone. The problem was that the new model year was just beginning and the new 68’s were just off the truck and couldn’t be released until the official release date. Detroit made a big deal of it back then and when we were shown the car it was in the back of the dealership and covered with a big white sheet. My dad signed all the papers and in three or four days the big day had come and we got the car. I was 12 then and it was totally cool to drive around in one of the first ‘68 Oldsmobiles to hit the streets. People stared and pointed at us. The new model year was a BIG deal back then.

I lived in Hawaii 73' to 75' My VW was in the shop for a few days. Mean while I bought the rustiest car in the world for $50 a 59 Olds to drive while the VW was being fixed. On my way to get the VW in Hilo I picked up a Hippy hitch hiking. Seemed like a pretty nice dude, so I pulled out the title when we got there, and signed the Olds over to him. As he pulled away he gave me the peace sign with a great big grin on his face, and the fenders flapping in the wind.

Adam Wade of "Rare Classic Cars & Automotive History", amazing channel, points out that GM, particularly Pontiac, often paired big engines with 2-barrel carburetors. He own a couple of them (65 Bonneville, etc.) and reports that they not only work very well, but actually have more power and smoother response than some of the contemporary 4-barrels. So, don't switchout the carburetor. Things are not always what they seem. In any case, great video, Chris!

Man, back in the day I had a full Technics stereo system with four 10" subwoofers and a full surround system that sounded awesome. I even had a couple of old Technics stereos that my buddy put in his 1984 S-10 with an aftermarket set of 6.5" woofers with a full set of door speakers, a set of MB Quart 3 way 5x7 split sets in the dash, and it sounded good with a power inverter. That was back in the late 90s, so we made due with what we had. I had a 1994 Eddie Bauer Explorer with a 302W swap, an Explorer Express Eaton M90 supercharger kit, the original AOD4 transmission, 2WD, jacked up on a Skyjacker 6" lift with 33x12.50 TSL Thornbirds on 15x10" chrome bullethole wheels. It had a full Sony Xplod tape deck with a Sony 10-disc CD changer, Sony Xplod door speakers, a set of JL Audio 15" subwoofers with two Kenwood 600 watt amps (with two 3 farad capacitors) and I could put a full Coke can on the roof and bounce it 10' in the air. Now I have a 2013 BMW 128i with a Jensen 7.5" touchscreen in the dash, a set of Sundown Audio 12" woofers, and a Soundstream Rubicon Nano RN1.5000D 5000 watt amp.

My first car was a 60 Chevrolet impala 2 door. Had a 283 automatic My uncle told me if I could get it running I could have it. He lived about 3 miles away. I was 15 so I walked to his house after school one day and put in plugs and a battery and drove it home with no tags or license. When he got home he thought it had been stolen, and called the cops. They found it sitting in my dad’s driveway with me under it changing the oil and the brakes. Nothing was done about me driving home but a talking to. The cop even helped me finish the left front brake so he could be sure I would get it right. Those were the good times. 1971

When I was younger lol, I'm a year older than that Olds, I've worked on quite a few of those brake systems. The systems worked great I think a big part of the problem with maintaining them was mechanics didn't understand how they worked and or how to service them, it was alien technology for a lot of guys. That booster/master was very simple to rebuild. Also the front wheel bearings can be replaced with tapered roller bearings from a Chevy chassis, just be careful of the ID and OD , they have to match the old style.
