Nice looking motor. I hear the hood rattle like my 62 SeaKing 40 had until I put new rubber under the hood. Thanks filor the ride along Ben.

Thank you. Yeah, the hood still rattles. It needs a new seal under it. I'll find something that works one of these days. Thanks for watching, Greg!

I do love the old motors. They're usually quite dependable when properly tuned and maintained. This one has not given me any trouble at all since I serviced it and is a super runner. I did have one issue on the lake yesterday, but it turned out OK. I'm debating putting up the video of the ride. It started out OK and ended with my motor quitting before I got back to shore...I got it fixed and ready for the lake again that afternoon, but I swapped to this motor before I worked on the other one to get it going again. All part of the fun. Ya can't win 'em all. LOL. Thanks for watching!

Looking good! Liking the bimini cover and want to get one if not too expensive. Got enough sun when I was younger and on the water literally all day for work purposes. Just finished successfully getting a 9.9 Johnson running well for a neighbour. Will now have to get my 55 Evinrude Big Twin going on its 57 Peterborough cold molded plywood boat. It was converted to electric by previous owner before i bought it 21 years ago:)

Thank you. This is the second boat this Bimini top has been on. I bought this one for my Sea Nymph 14R, which I sold to a good friend of mine. I kept the Bimini for the next boat. I finally got around to getting it mounted on this FD. I have another one on my other FD at home. The other one has straps front and back. This one has the rigid poles at the rear and straps to the front. I like both kinds for different reasons. I bought both of them on Amazon. They're pretty inexpensive and I do like the shade sometimes. I also have a '55 Big Twin someone before me converted to electric start that I need to get going. Thanks for watching!

Nice to have the Bimini top for shade comfort, but that acts like a sail & exacerbates a tendency to porpoise. Got to take the positives along with the negatives. Life is, many times, just one big tradeoff. 😮 Good that you gave that Gale some exercise, though. 😊

Yes, use of the Bimini needs to be balanced woth what you want to do on the water, for sure. It does act like a sail and adversely affects handling and performance, especially in windy conditions. It also gets in the way for entering and exiting the vessel. The shade is excellent when it is a very sunny day. You just have to weigh the options. It attaches and removes easlily once the mounting points are installed, so it's easy enough to do whatever your mood leads you to do. I always enjoy running this Gale. Thanks for watching!

🙂👍 Gale Products was the third division of OMC. They built their own line of motors like this one as well as lots of store brands like Sea King for Montgomery Ward and Sea Bee for Goodyear Tire and Rubber. Depending on the motor, they may have shared many or only a few parts with their Johnson and Evinrude counterparts. Thanks for watching!!

@oldjohnnyrude8404 speaking of evinrude, now that evinrude went out of business in 2020, has Mercury taken over all the parts divisions for Johnson and Evinrudes ? Or is that becoming harder to find ?
@oldjohnnyrude8404

@@LighthouseProductions1 To my knowledge, BRP is still handling the service parts for Johnson and Evinrude. Things get discontinued quite frequently, but many things are still available. Thanks for watching!

Your video makes me want to get my '53 25hp rude out. Just something about that extra torque those motors have that is great. It pulls over plenty hard though! I usually need to stand up to pull it over, my Bimini top might be a problem! Shade is good! Thanks for sharing.
@oldjohnnyrude8404
@oldjohnnyrude8404 2 месяца назад
Yeah, I love the torque these big motors have. They do pull over kind of hard and a pull from standing is much easier, especially for a cold start. I can stand up under this Bimini and not smack the poles when starting a motor. Yes, shade is good sometimes. Thanks for watching, Dale!

These old rd series motors can produce darn good speed and lots of tourqe! Especially compared the smaller fd series Just posted my first videos of a 65 33hp I just finished and up for sale in michigan
@oldjohnnyrude8404
@oldjohnnyrude8404 22 дня назад
@@chadholmes5876 Yessir! They produce gobs of torque. The 22c.i 25hp relies on high RPMs to produce their power. They have to be allowed to spin up. The RD series 25hp is working with 35.7c.i of displacement and makes its power at only 4000 rpms vs 6000 for the 22c.i. those 33s were nice motors too. Thanks for watching!

That engine runs great! What oil mix do you run?
@oldjohnnyrude8404
@oldjohnnyrude8404 2 месяца назад
Thank you! This is a 24:1 mix motor. It is basically just a 50s Johnson / Evinrude RD/Big Twin with a fuel pump. They don't have needle bearings on the wristpins, so running these dry on oil will shorten its life considerably. Thanks for watching!

Hey Ben. Nice motor. So you have the 1960 15hp and 25hp. I gotta ask. Do you have the 3 and 5hp models from 1960 too?
@oldjohnnyrude8404
@oldjohnnyrude8404 2 месяца назад
Thank you. I currently only have the 15 and the 25 in the yellow 1960 Gale Buccaneer. I have a '61 5hp that needs a new powerhead. I just found a matching 1960 5hp on Marketplace. Unfortunately, it comes with a boat and trailer I don't need and don't want to pay for. I would like to have the 3 also, but I'll just keep my eyes open. It's always fun to habe things to look for at the swap meets. Thanks for watching!

Strong 25 for sure! Did I see 27 mph? Those big motors are so much fun!
@oldjohnnyrude8404
@oldjohnnyrude8404 2 месяца назад
Yes, you saw 27mph. It will do a solid 28+ on flat water and some ballast innthe front so it doesn't porpoise. Thanks for watching!

Great engine for cruising. What is the rattling noise, engine cover? Bimini top is perfect for this weather
@oldjohnnyrude8404
@oldjohnnyrude8404 2 месяца назад
Yes, it is a great engine for cruising. It runs along at about 23-24mph at about 70% throttle not even breathing hard. The rattle is the cover. I'm still working at getting that resolved. The Bimini is great for bright sunny days. Thanks for watching!

Nice motor. Are Gale parts interchangeable with Johnson and Evinrude?
@oldjohnnyrude8404
@oldjohnnyrude8404 2 месяца назад
Thank you. The majority of non-cosmetic parts are interchangeable. Some Gale motors had more differences than others from their Johnson/Evinrude counterparts. Tune up parts are all the same. Thanks for watching!

@@KentRobertSwickJrAroudTheWorld Thank you. I do occasionally sell a motor or two. I actually live down state but we have a place near Manistee Lake in Kalkaska, so that's pretty close to you. I have a couple 10hp motors for sale. A '59 Johnson QD-20 in camouflage and a '59 Evinrude Sportwin. The Evinrude is pretty faded out but both motors run nicely. I just need to put a replacement gearcase on the Johnson as the original has a bad drive shaft bushing that is allowing water to get past the new seal when the motor runs. I also have a couple 5.5hp motors for sale if those are of any interest. Thanks for watching!

hey nice motor. I have question for you. I guy wants me to work his 1955 25 hp Johnson. His say it way low on power. I have never work on a 25hp. I was wondering what compression should be. I checked and its about 88 on both wondering if that the problem before I even start. It runs and has spark in both clys.
@oldjohnnyrude8404
@oldjohnnyrude8404 Месяц назад
Thank you! I would say 88psi is slightly low, but not terrible of a '55 OMC 25hp. It also depends on your gauge. If your gauge is a Harbor Freight Pittsburgh gauge, they read notoriously low. I have a Craftsman gauge and a Bosch gauge and they read typically within 5psi of one another. Using my Bosch gauge, my 1955 RDE-17 reads 95psi top and 105psi bottom. It is a beautiful runner with average power. The Gale in this video measured 115 top and 118 bottom using my Craftsman gauge the last time I measured it. I'd say with 88psi, it's still worth trying to find out why it is low on power. It should still be making decent power with those numbers. Thanks for watching, Scott!

@@outboardfun3353 You're welcome!. If you can, you may want to have a look at the pistons and cylinders even if only through the bypass ports to make sure they're not getting scored too badly. I'd it seems like it is losing a cylinder while underway even if it shows spark on both when testing, check the plugs for moisture. If there is any water getting into a cylinder either around the head gasket or possibly through the exhaust cover baffle plate, it may be putting the fire out in that cylinder even if the spark plug is firing when checked. Just something to consider as I have run across this myself. 👍

@@oldjohnnyrude8404 well I got it started not sure its a power problem. It won't rev-up pass about half speed even went in gear. Carb is opening all the way. Timing looks good. carb was a little dirty but not bad. its not the needle setting's Can it be anything with the cutout switch I'm not sure whats it for. Have any ideas
@oldjohnnyrude8404
@oldjohnnyrude8404 Месяц назад
@@outboardfun3353 The overspeed switch could be shorting one set of points before it actually overpeeds. You can disconnect the wire to that switch to disable it and try it again. Before you do that, I recommend removing the carb plate and the air silencer so in case you have an issue with a runaway, you can block the carb intake to kill the engine.
