Back in 1963, I was going o the cinema with my father, to see a James Bond Film, It was raining and we were soaked, as we stopped at the zebra crossing, A beautiful looking car stopped to let us cross, when we had reached the other side, I asked my father what car that was, He said its a jaguar ! from that day on this was my no 1 motor, The mk 2 and the E type have a permanent place in my heart,

I remember the MKII being featured prominently in the '60's Stanley Baker film: "Robbery". The chase scenes were fraught with such tension. I am led to believe the MKII was a favorite getaway car of assorted criminals.

I can remember driving Mk2s on the M1 at a steady 100mph without feeling at all edgy. The worry was the lack of an Armco barrier in the central reservation! Provided that the brakes have been properly maintained, or upgraded, there shouldn't be any nonsense about sending messages from the bridge etc. The warning light suggests that either you left the handbrake on or that the fluid level was low. It would be interesting to learn what tyres were fitted and how old they were. To get the full Mk2 flavour you really need a 3.8 with overdrive and power steering - a very different animal!

Perfect body & interior styling for one. Then, the inline 6. Perfect powerplant to wrap this elegant, not-too-small-body around.

In the seventies got my 3.8 manual to 123mph and once averaged 98mph Exeter to Bristol on motorway to catch a train. No speed cameras, patrol cars Triumph 2.5p.i.s couldn't go more than 110 without lights etc. Felt a lot safer and more accomplished than Austins. Fords. Hillmans etc. I'd driven up till then. Father did 119 mph, 5up. slightly downhill in his 3.4 mk1 at night!. but he was slightly mad or very confident in his admittedly high ability. ( Mother not happy)

I had a 1966 Daimler 2 1/2 litre saloon (the Daimler engined Mk II) for 25 years, it was such a beautiful car. I eventually sold it when it turned 50 years old because it was too nice a car and too old to be driving every day. I took it up to 100 mph just once to see how it would perform. It was in the early 1990s on a remote, empty and dead straight country road 200 km east of Perth in Western Australia - not much chance of hitting any surprises. It ran smoothly but blew out a bit of oil through the rear shaft seal at that speed. The light weight of the little Daimler V8 made it a perfect match for the Mk II body. It was beautifully balanced and a real pleasure to drive.

The sedan underpinnings are identical to the XKE, so other than the greater weight and higher center of gravity of the sedan/saloon, the handling should be very good. Seems like the example driven here had worn steering or suspension parts, as this car should never feel squirrely if driven sanely. We had a 3.8 MkII in the 60's, knock-off wire wheels, cream with red leather. Fantastic cars.

I like how you keep reviewing cars that have been on my radar. I actually did end up buying the Rover P5B Coupé. In its day, it wasn't the Jag that was the gentleman's car, but the more understated Rover. The Jaguar was more new money, like real estate agents. The Rover appealed more to the likes of Queen Elizabeth and a range of prime ministers.

Buddy and his dad restored one to absolute perfection in 1968. Dad tried to move a bridge with it.

In many years, one of my "want to have cars" is a Jaguar MkII 3.8. It has never gone that way, but, my memory of the worst car of that period was a Hillman Minx on winter tires, as old as the car. It was terrifying.

i've driven my '67 MK2 manual (no overdrive) at 65 MPH and 2800 RPM all day for six days running on the freeway from california to ohio and it was quite pleasant at that speed. i'll be doing the same with my '53 MGTD in a few months. i won't be traveling that fast nor do i expect it to be as comfortable as the Jag either! 55MP will probably be the max and 45 MPH would be optimal. :) BTW, i like that light blue/red color treatment and the steel wheels!

1960 . . . we could be twins. And it looks almost as good as me 🤣 I have long lusted after one of these, but finding a good one with a manual is waaaay beyond my means.

Enjoyed watching your video, and comparing your thoughts to my own experience. Dad's Mark 11 was the first car I drove, off the road, at 10 years of age. I still have the car and enjoy driving it. I'd like to suggest you would feel more confident if you could change driving style a bit. For example, use two hands whenever turning the wheel, feeding it from hand to hand. In a manual never try to change gear when you are trying to steer, just one thing at a time. Good luck!

This model is an automatic. I also find single handed driving more precise on classics, including my own Lincoln's since it requires less second-by-second adjustments

The light was indeed on, although the handbrake certainly was off as well, so the fluid level may have needed topping up

193 km/h is actually not that slow. Many slower fwd budget cars of today will only do about 160-180. Not really fast but its alright. Its very beautiful!
