Hello Darlings! In this weeks video I show you how you can create a 1960s bouffant hairstyle. It was heaps of fun changing up my regular 40's/50's hair for something more of an adventurous hairdo! I hope you enjoy the video and be sure to let me know if you try this style out too!
Lots of love,
Sage xx

My mother was stunned that anyone these days knows how to do pin curls much less standing pin curls. You're preserving an art form!

She definitely does a great job of it! And there are thousands of people, particularly millenials it seems, who are really into recreating vintage hairstyles and fashions, most often 30s to 60s. You can find news articles about it online! If only someone like your mother would create videos showing us how ordinary people actually pincurled their hair "back in the day"! That's the one thing that's so hard to find.... One little thing confuses me: your calling these "standing" pin curls, when they were actually flat ones, am I right? (The ones sticking out weren't supposed to!) As I understand it, stand-up pin curls resembled barrel curls made with rollers, just that they were rolled and pinned without any rollers.
@douglasanderson9407

Sorry for any confusion. I was referring to the way she did her hair in another video with the SPC. Alas my mom is too old to do her own hair anymore.

What is your hair washing routine like (shampoo, conditioner, leave in treatments, hairspray etc?). I have finer hair so many styles are harder to accomplish!!
@SageLilleyman
@SageLilleyman 3 года назад
I wash my hair 1-2 times a week with just regular old shampoo and conditioner. I sometimes use leave in treatments like a deep treatment conditioner a couple of times a month. I usually use L'oreal Elnett hairspray which is perfect for vintage styles because you can still brush and style your hair after you have sprayed it! I find doing a little teasing underneath a vintage hairstyle really helps to give your hair body! I hope this helps! xx

Always a lot of work to fix it and every day a new bottle of hairspray!! 😹😹😹 I likes the sixties and seventies and although I would like that our live was just the same now, I am happy with many things from “this new period”. One of the reasons it's so hard to replicate 1960s hair styles is that hair is no longer cut the way it was then. Layering and shaping was done differently to suit those styles. Now everything is about angle cutting. Doesn't translate well to older styles.

I wore my hair in a flip for one year during the 60’s. I set it with rollers.With most of the rollers I would wind my hair down and around the rollers... but with the bottom 2 rollers around my head, I would wind my hair up and around each roller. I ratted my hair and sprayed my hair with Aqua Net. I wore rollers to sleep every night. Standing pin curls give a more elaborate hairdo than rollers... interesting video!

As a retired beautician, you did a pretty good job especially in the bang or fringe area. You are fortunate to have thick hair with hair coloring - both help with a long lasting style. I have some suggestions to make your comb out easier and long lasting. After you brush out your hair, section the crown area in a size of a small cap and tie it up. Then go to the back hair section and with a rat tail or teasing comb, and backcomb starting at the root and then feather out towards the end. Dońt use hairspray yet and with a brush (not a comb), gently smooth the surface and use your fingers to place curls or waves. Use a metal pic or a rat tail comb to gently pull out volume if needed. Then spray with a very light coat of hairspray. Then go to the crown area you pinned up starting in the front with an inch parting and back comb straight up at a 90 degree angle. Make sure to pack it in at the root and ease off towards the ends of the hair. Do another inch row and then back comb both sections together so you can’t see the individual rows. Continue the process with the whole section.. Do not put hair spray on at this time - often times it will gum up the hair making it difficult to comb out. With a brush (a nylon bristle old fashioned hairbrush), gently smooth the top layer of hair over the packed in back combing. Dońt worry about this bouffant area being too big but focus on smoothing the top layer of hair. Then with both hands smooth the bouffant finishing it to secure in the back of the head. Mash it down to the size you want but make sure it will be higher than the bang area. Then temporarily secure it with Bobbie pins. Dust it with a light spray of hair spray. Then go to the side sections of the hair using the same techniques as above. Make sure to finish with a brush to gently smooth the surface and create a wave away from the face. Finish up the bang and top of the head area. This can be challenging so be patient and dońt use hairspray out of frustration. You will be back combing like you did in the cap area. Take a one inch parting and back comb it up at a 90 degree angle. Finish the entire area. With both your fingers and thumb, gently spread out the hair so it fans over the bouffant. Then with the front one inch area of the brush, use dabbing strokes to smooth the hair at the forehead, brushing up at a 90 degree angle. Then give that facial hair section a slight spritz of hairspray. Then gently use the brush to smooth over the top. Use your hands to arrange the rest of the area. Look in the mirror to make sure the bang and top area is lower than the bouffant cap. Check the entire style for balance and use the metal pick or rat tail comb to bring out volume. Make sure not to pull the comb thru otherwise you will destroy your back combing. Use your hands to mash in areas that are too big. Once your style is to your liking, clasp the bouffant area with a medium sized barrette. If you don’t have that use Bobbie pins and criss cross them over. Then take a small stand of hair, roll it up over the Bobbie pins to hide it and pin down. Then spray hairspray all over the style. Don’t spray too much because if you need to fix an area later it will be like working on glue. To maintain this style, as many ladies did in this era, at night they pin curled their hair using large sections ( leave the crown alone) and put on a silk bonnet. For most women, they could maintain this style for a week.

Or does anyone have any tips?....I have wavy hair but for some reason my hair refuses to hold a curl with hot rollers. It will last maybe a day My mom used to always tell me before I curled my hair for any big even “don’t use conditioner when you shower to make sure your curls last longer.” But Im wondering if anyone else has any other tips? The final result is way too 50s rather than 60s, the hair is too layered, layers are a totally 50s thing, the "bun" should have been bigger than your head and some simple flips would have worked, ask Karolina Zebrowska ha ha, but it's cute anyways.

I was in high school in the 60's and wore my hair in a flip most of the time. Set it nightly on rollers then in the morning I'd brush it out and flip the ends up over my hand. I wasn't into teasing the top - though some girls did. I liked mine more natural & soft.I kept my hair just long enough to brush my shoulders, my Mom was a good hair cutter so I would have her trim it occasionally. Wore it like this until the long straight styles came in- no more rollers!!! Just wash in the morning - comb it wet and let it air dry.
