1960s TV Sign-off. High Flight Poem
"A Pilot's Prayer" Poem by John Gillespie Magee
John Gillespie Magee
An Anglo-American aviator and poet. Magee served in the Royal Canadian Air Force, which he joined before the United States entered the war; he died in a mid-air collision over Lincolnshire in 1941.
High Flight
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air…
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew -
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

I remember staying up late when I was a kid in the 60s to watch the station signoffs. I always remembered this one.

Exactly the same thing for me. That was the best part of having the t.v. - to me! Even hearing it/watching it now (at 75) gives me goosebumps.

As so many others have said this always takes me back in time when life was so much simpler, no cell phones, no computers, tv only 4 channels and needed outside antenna... great going back down that road of memories.

Oh how I remember this, my Mom and I would stay up late to watch a monster movie 🎥, drink a warm glass of milk 🥛 and it was bedtime. Life was so much simpler then. Drink your milk and go to bed now.

It’s in black and white, earning it even more vintage points.

I miss the days when television would sign off for the night, and the whole world would go to sleep. Peace of mind just doesn’t seem obtainable any longer with 24 hour television programs on 150 different channels and commercials in your face everywhere you go.

I'm of the same vintage. There was an earlier one used in the 50's that used an F86 sabre jet I believe. Remember that one?

I remember listening to this late at night at the end of local channel broadcasting before cable, streaming, etc. came out, depending on which channel. Sometimes they would play "You'll Never Walk Alone" by The Lettermen or just play the National Anthem. Then I would fall asleep😴 or stay up watching screen snow😵‍💫

So way back in the day, some cereal (or maybe it was another product) offered tiny grey polystyrene (or some kind of injected plastic molding) of various USAF aircraft including I believe the Bell X-1, the F86, 102 and 106 but as a kid my favorite was the F104, although at times I imagined being Chuck Yeager and dropping from a B29 and breaking the sound barrier, but that's another story. Just something about the design, the feel, the look. For several years I've searched antique toy shops, the internet, for some remembrance of these tiny toy aircraft. So far no luck. Anyone else remember these?

Ah yes the days when even TVland went to sleep at night. I actually had forgotten all about pre-24/7 TV and listening to static early Saturday, waiting for the test pattern and tone. Where's my cartoons? Where's my Wonderama!? Hurry! Because of this habit, I now recall, I once caught Metromedia (KTTV 11 Los Angeles, pre-Fox) on air, studio camera on before they ran their test - just a wee whoopsy of about 5 seconds maybe - no action/sound on set.
