Thanks for your comment. I bought the bike when a Mech Eng student in Bradford in 1978. It was being thrashed around the local area by kids at the time. The engine ran but had a hole in the timing cover. I also raced a Villiers 210 cc kart back then (with a good friend), so got the Greeves going with what ever was to hand. The kick start is way dodgy & I’m not sure how the timing cover ended up as-is. It all works though but I’d be pleased to learn of any improvement ideas.
Hi again. I've just looked up Terry Weedy - I haven't come across this site before, so thanks for that. My kick start isn't from there. It's clearly not correct either - being wider than the Villiers kick start spindle is long, which is not ideal. I'll maybe look at finding a better replacement
@@Greeves Your bike looks to be a TD model Scottish like mine. The footrests have been modified to move them further back but they still seem to be as far as I can see rigid and not folding as are now required in competition. I think the non-standard kick start has been fitted to clear the footrest. I would suggest that the increased overhang of the kick start on the gearbox shaft is not a good idea with risk of damage tp the shaft by bending. Unitil recently mine had the original fixed footrest bar. The kickstart came to rest on this as a stop to prevent excessive movement. I have recently had the system modified to fit folding footrests on the original bar. I do not compete but merely observe in local pre65 trials. If you were to fit folding footrests you could fit the standard Villiers kickstart. As for the points cover it obviously fits so could be off another Villiers engine. Are you a member of the Greeves Riders Association? If you are then PM me as 350biker, if not you might find, as I did, that there are lots of very helpful members who can pass on useful experience. Well worth joining.
Yes mine is a TDS. The forests are rigid and evidently modified / repaired several times, though not since I’ve had it. I’ve had the bike for over forty years and used to occasionally compete, for fun rather than glory, when I lived in Yorkshire. I was a member of the GRA for many years but let it lapse; probably a decade ago. Maybe I should rejoin, modify the foot rests & have a go in a trial again. The last one I did was the Clee Hills Trial and must have been before the foot rest rule change. Tempting. :)
