I was a child in the sixties when these came out, loved both the Valiant and Lancer in Exner's styling.

My grandfather had a 1963 valliant when I was young. Slant 6 and the ford 300 inline 6 were the most reliable engine made in the US.

I thought they were so ugly when I was a child in the '60s. Now I would love to have one and would be proud to drive it.

Had a 62 Lancer 170 model with 3 on the tree bought used in 1967 for $325.00, came with a 170ci 6cyl engine great on gas one of the best cars I have owned. Kept the car for 3 years sold it and ordered a new 1970 Dart Custom loaded, what a piece of junk, traded it in for a new 1973 Chevy Caprice Classic. FYI, over a span 60 years have had 20 cars and trucks the top 4 have been 1. 1962 Dodge Lancer, 2. 1962 Chrysler Newport, 3. 1984 Ford Crown Vic, 4. 2006 Scion xb. All vehicles starting in1969 were purchased new.

Pity there was no video of it on the highway. My first car was a 61 Lancer with the 170 and 3 on the floor. I really miss that old car.

That would be throttle-body fuel-injection. The oil cap is a misfit and should be changed at once with the correct cap, the one on the engine now is blocking the internal flow. As well, the PCV (valve) is disconnected. These things need immediate attention, or there's trouble ahead.

As a owner of a 61 Lancer, I feel concerned about the oil cap. I think the one I ordered looks a lot like the one in the video. Can you explain what is not right about it please. Thank you for your help.
@discerningmind

@@fanfoua I hope what I've written for you answers your question. One note here, is that I choose my words carefully to say exactly what I mean. As a result, I suggest that you actually read what I've written, and not scan it as so many people do now. Yes, there are some things I'm seeing about the oil cap in the video. First, understand that the engineers of all auto manufacturers design parts to have specific values to accomplish the need for a given engine or engine line, that they themselves have designed. It's important that any replacement parts meet the same value or requirements that the engineers had originally designed into a part. The exception would be if a part has been officially redesigned, such as an improvement. The oil cap in the video is incorrect, as follows: One thing is that a chrome finish almost always means that it's not an OEM part. As well, after-market parts are not necessarily a correct OEM designed replacement. As well, non-OEM parts doesn't mean that they were correctly designed for specific engines, and often they are designed to fit as many engines that it happens to fit onto. When an auto manufacturer offers chrome upgraded parts, they will only be available from the parts department at a dealership that sells that make of car, brand-new. Thus, OEM parts are available. Or, they will be branded as "genuine" parts from the manufacturer and sold by manufacturer approved retailers. Chrysler Corporation, the manufacturer of your Lancer, built their oil caps painted the same color as their engines. I don't have a reference to be able to say if they offered chrome oil caps, but the cap in the video is certainly not from Chrysler. More about the oil cap in the video being incorrect. The chrome oil cap is sitting down onto the valve cover, and that means the air flow inlets on the bottom side of the cap are blocked. Two other indicators that it's siting on the valve cover are, I can see a circular ring of oil on the valve cover that's the same size of the oil cap. And I could hear the oil cap hit the valve cover when the cap was reinstalled. That type of oil cap never sits on the valve cover. When pushed all the way on, there will always be at least a 2"-3" gap above the valve cover to the bottom of the cap. Other than a cheap chrome finish, the cap seems to have been built OK. I can see that it has plenty of material fibers packed into it, which is what you want. If an oil cap doesn't have enough material fibers inside it, such as the fibers don't look well packed, but skimpy--don't buy it--because it won't trap dirt that will be drawn into the engine. So the build of this cap is OK, it's just the wrong size for this engine. Oil caps last a very long time, so you might look for a used one, I would. The material fibers inside of an old cap can break apart if treated aggressively. If the material fibers need cleaning, don't use anything strong on it like carb cleaner, gas, or kerosene. And don't poke at the fibers. Use some light sprays of undiluted Simple Green and don't worry about getting it really clean. Don't rinse it, just let it drain onto a rag. I hope this helps. If you have more questions, feel free.

Does anybody know what the big brown cover thing in the engine bay is called? I’m pretty sure it’s a heater core cover of some sort, I’m looking at a 62 gt but it’s missing that bit and I want to see how goes it is to find a replacement and it’s a lot easier to find a part you know the name of
