I bought this car on eBay, the seller put a lot of parts in it and said the engine was running, but I found that not to be the case. So can I get it to run? Better yet, can I get it to DRIVE around the block??!
The last time it was registered was in 1974. I don't know if it has been driven since then or not, but for all I know it has not been!
The seller says the engine and transmission was rebuilt. No info about it though. There's new tires (trailer tires) on the wheels, a lot of new parts under the hood, and new carpet that cover's the seller's terrible attempt at patching rust holes in the floor.
Subscribe if you haven't already! Thanks!

Any first gen Comet wagon is a minor treasure, and as such, has every appeal over the sedans. Love that back end styling, understated with those dual range taillights. And that grille is amazingly straight. This car is a doll, requiring the appropriate tlc from whoever gets it next. I'd call her Tina.

When I was a kid back in the '60s our family car was a trusty 1960 Mercury Comet station wagon. Same body and engine as this car. The 1960 grill and the tail lights were a bit different though. She was a great all- round car. Very dependable, a real work horse. Unlike today's sleek jelly bean cars it was easy for grandma to get in and out. Carried the family or folded the back seat down for lots of cargo. We went to Florida for vacation in it a bunch of times from Atlanta, cruisin' down old highway 41 at 50mph, we kids counting the cows or sleeping in the back. No AC, just rolled the windows down and opened the side vents and it was all good. She served us well for many years. I miss that old Comet, it was like part of the family.

Congratulations on getting it to drive! Great to see a young guy who cares about more than just cell phones and computers.

Your Honda dream graced my timeline because I am converting a scooter from 1941 to 72volt electric. I also have a 62 comet sitting in the dirt and was pipedreaming of doing an EV out of it (it’s probably too far gone). Will definitely be tuning into your channel for updates. Admire your skill set and drive.

These Comet wagons were not common even when they were new, they are definitely worth restoring.

Sounds like the timing is over-advanced, but the engine does run. Also, there was no such thing as an electronic choke in the 60s, not even electric chokes. I think these had a hand choke.

These cars are noted for U-joints and rear leafs wearing before their time comes.

Sounds like a U joint on the drive shaft or something

It should have fan blades attached to the water pump hub. Why do you need an electric fan?

Third year for the Comet, but first year it bore the Mercury name.

They were essentially the same as a Ford Falcon except minor details.

It has an "Ontario" licence plate surround. Was this a Canadian built car?

Is the Leaf’s drivetrain going to end up in the comet?

Looks to me like ignition timing is a bit too advanced
@cobbleup

On second thought….after seeing that rotten gas , that can cause lots of issues.
@ThisOldJalopy
@ThisOldJalopy Год назад
@@cobbleup Oddly, it's a lot harder to start now with fresh gas in it. Do you think the iginition could be too advanced? Or to retarded? Once it's running and the engine is warmed up, its running better than when it was on the old gas.
@cobbleup
@cobbleup Год назад
@@ThisOldJalopy it sounds like it’s firing too far advanced. If you don’t have a timing light i’d try a static ignition timing at about 10 degrees advanced or maybe even less. Maybe start at 5 degrees advanced. The leaded fuel it was designed to run on may make you have to tweak the timing a bit from what was recommended back then. Not sure which way but I’d think a degree or 2 less advanced than the original setting would be safest to avoid predetination (pinging)
