That Jewel radio is featured prominently in the final beach scene in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) There is a lengthy still shot of just the radio when Jane (Betty Davis) runs to a refreshment stand to get an ice cream cone. While she's waiting for the cone she is recognized by beach goers as announcements of Jane kidnapping her sister Blanche are broadcast over the radio. The crowd and police approach her and Jane begins to dance, basking in the attention she craved.
Hi Shango, I'm glad you like the radios. I got the Panasonic at a SCARS meet for next to nothing. I purchased it with those batteries in it, someone else recapped it. I got the factory alignment instructions and tried to align it. It went o.k until the insulating material on the trimmers disintegrated. I also got the Jewell Radio at the Topanga flea market, but forgot where I got the realistic. Got rid of this stuff because I need to thin my hoard at my ripe old age of 18. Glad it's gone to a great home. I look forward to more of your great videos.
Love those old Motorola Transistor AM radios from the late 50's and early 60's, all of them are great performers with sensitivity and sound, esp the models with the RF stage and some with 3 IF stages like the X29 model from 1962. Motorola did some very good engineering back then.
Heck, the way things are going in Chicago, the best and fastest warning system you may get for the ongoing "civil unrest" is to listen to a local AM news station, so, having one handy may save your life and or prevent your car from getting danced on like a Studio 54 dancefloor in the 70's
I've driven in Chicago and you can keep it. People drive like idiots on the highway at 80 to 90 miles an hour zigzagging in and out of traffic. If you drive downtown the pedestrians don't even look they just step out in front of you and Louisville old even though they're idiots and don't look they have the right of way. Billboards warning you of how many people were hit in Chicago by cars last year. When I was up there it was over 3,000. The problem is the pedestrians. As I told my daughter's growing up yes you do have the right way in a crosswalk. Let the car go. Maybe right but you'll also be dead.
@@randyab9go188 Since I grew up in the area, the area expressways, or even driving downtown, doesn't bother me. I have seen more "4 lane cut across" numbers to get to an exit in other cities than around here, but, you have to still expect the unexpected. And although pedestrians do have the proverbial right of way in a marked crosswalk, if they take the chance of stepping off of a curb in front of someone intently playing with a "electronic entertainment device", they may become a Darwin award winner by thinking they are in the right as well.
I have quite a few of these X31s. Having retired from Motorola a few years ago, I have a love for all things Motorola. The X31 works really well! Intermittent battery connections is a problem with all of them.
I collect old radios and I mostly have old Motorola's from the early to mid 60s including one of these. Mine has is an X31-1 with the civil defense antenna screw. They made very good stuff in this era
My former business partner as well as former Motorola’n, he was in land mobile sales and I was an FTR. He had one of these on his desk. Inherited from his father who used it doing construction back in the 60’s and 70’s. All beat up, but still played last I saw it around 2007.
Yeah it is a shame that they are killing off the AM stations, it's the same here in the UK. Wow I love these old 60's American transistor sets, Motorola made some fantastic radios and TVs. Interesting testing these old girls out in the desert also I love the dance party. You can't wrong with Roxy Music always a crowd pleaser 🤪🤪 The original Locomotion by Little Eva is by far my favourite over the Kylie version. Really interesting to listen to these AM stations. Great video you really cheered up my weekend.
I recently built an AM transmitter that outputs about a hundred milliwatts into which I built in an mp3 player module that supports up to a 128g card/stick. I loaded a bunch of cards with different stuff, from favourite music, full albums, live shows, one hit wonders right through to Wolfman Jack shows, Casey Casem, even various movie scores. I just let it run 24/7 on random play and never get sick of hearing any of it. The power level keeps reception limited to my own property, but now many of my old restored AM radio's get used a lot more than they ever did, mostly because of the garbage they say and play now. It's not HiFi, but then it never was, but there is still a sound to it that I like.
Shango066, one of the channels that you past up was KGO in California, when I was younger in the 70's and 80's while traveling we would pick up this station via skip as far away as Washington state! And it's still playing my (our) favorite radio show "The Mormon Tabernacle Choir".
Shango066, I grew up in the Seattle area, there was an AM radio station that we used to listen to all the time called KIXI, it used to play the old music that my parents liked and I grew to like, for an example Perry Como, news etc
Hi Shango, Great episode Sir! That San Diego station is KCBQ 1170 50KW days 2900 watts nights now. That station is historic as. The call letters were dedicated to the fact that in the golden days they were a CBS affiliate(KCBQ-CBS). The station was also of note in the Top-40 days as the first Q-Format a very tight top-40 format which was copied by a lot of others including stations in Los Angeles most notably KKDJ/102.7 now KIIS-FM. I too am saddened by what has happened to radio due to deregulation. In the old days the rule was 7 AM/7FM/7TV stations now 7 companies own everything. Thanks F.C.C. They will wreck tv as well unfortunately. Take Care and I really look forward to seeing these videos! Thanks for doing them.
They wrecked the good variety of easy listening music formats that use to be on FM too, thank you F.C.C. for allowing 7 companies own everything, and the influence of arbitron ratings for influencing the change toward just the most popular few formats, demographics and advertising dollars targeting younger generations only.
Totally feel you, Shango. Here in Houston, some HD stations recently shut off their multicast channels and turned off Artist Experience (album cover art). There's a general decline in radio, and this time might actually be the beginning of the end of terrestrial radio. Satellite and the Internet are where all the focus is, so terrestrial radio as we know it is on its way out.
This reminds me of when I tuned around on my clock radio late at night back in the 70s. From central Illinois I could get anything from New York, New Orleans, Texas, Denver to Minnesota. But could not get anything west of the Rockies. Also that station that kept fading out reminded me of listening to Art Bell back in the 90s, right when it got interesting it would fade out!
Shango I've been watching your videos for 2 years now and whether you fix the set or fail your knowledge is amazing. I think this is the first time I've ever seen you fail on a set. I don't think you failed I think you just took a break. Keep on doing what your doing your knowledge is amazing and a God given talent. God bless!
Probably not. The radio had the older National logo and the batteries were the newer Panasonic logo. Plus the radio crackled when he turned it on and 50 year old nonrechargeable batteries aren't going to be good any more.
Dear Shago066, I really enjoy these videos, you are buy far have the greatest, from watching your videos, I have become inspired to take up this hobby, thank you!!! We have WWVA in Wheeling West Va. Which is 1170.
Radio was my escape as a teenager in an abusive home. I'd go in the family's car and cruise thru radio stations for hours, searching for everything and anything interesting. I also played around with CB radios and fixing old radios in my teens. Shame radio is becoming obsolete.
Great video. That Alan Parsons sounded spooky in the beginning, being at night and all the background noise! Got a kick out of you all 🕺 dancing out there too, fun stuff!
Old radio salvaged from the bin.. seem almost grateful for the attention. I get them from the old folks home/ truck stops/ rest areas. Even found one in a plastic bag at the bottom of a coal mine. The effort is worth it. And satisfying 🤩
I have a 1961 ARVIN am portable, powered by four C batteries that seems to play for ever. Model 61R58 in a genuine cowhide case. The batteries were last changed 16 months ago. ARVIN INC. Columbus, Indiana. It looks great, and I value it much.
You are by far my favorite channel. I enjoy every video you do. Keep up the great work. Oh and I miss la oldies it was probably the best am station here but oh well
1170 KCBQ - they run 50kw during the day, but they put most of that signal out over the fishes from an array way east of the city. One of Salem Radio's properties, they are nicely conservative. 940 XEMMM - only runs 1kw days/100 watts after dark. Decent high-angle dx catch originating across the border from El Centro. As I always say, you cant go wrong with Motorola gear, esp vintage stuff. Never had a radio of theirs I didn't like. Happy with my Motorola smartphones as well.
So for the past 4 days I've had the "Tin Man" song from "America" stuck in my head, was just revisiting this one and figured out why.. (30.00) "And cause never was the reason for the evening Or the tropic of Sir Galahad So, please.. Believe in me" And I'm an Australian, thanks Shango066
Your videos are relaxing to watch, and I love your social/political commentary'. I used to build Dynaco kits in the late '60's...closest I got to your craft. Thanks, again.
I have heard there are fake Capacitor Wizard testers on the market. How does one know if you are getting a real one? Buying direct from the manufacturer is one way I suppose.
If you didn't get it get the option board that will allow you to test capacitors without having to worry if they're fully discharged. The cap wizard is easy to fix but I'd rather not.😮
@@randyab9go188 I put my tongue across the cap.. If it zaps me, then I know to put a clip lead across it to short it out before I use the Capacitor Wizard.
I got a 60's Audition clock radio set to AM 1420 WVJS as my alarm. It has nothing but 60s-80s music. Styx, Van Halen, Fleetwood Mac, Grateful Dead and so on. I'm lucky i guess. A more distant station at AM 730 plays country music from the 50s-70s.
I was fixing an AM set up last night and was able to get WSM out of Nashville, so as long as I can get that there is at least 1 channel that I like to listen to. Country and Blue Grass stuff and it's mainly the older stuff... but other than that, hardly anything to listen to on AM. And that's only at night, during the day I'll bet I can't grab WSM....
I was in AZ/NV last week for a tradeshow, and went hiking with my cousin on the way back near Lee's Ferry. Love the desert, would love to come along on a trip to nowhere and do some DX, maybe some radiating too....
Roxy Music? Alan Parsons? That's a quality station, right there. Every so often I'll forget about Avalon and then rediscover it again and it's always magic.
GASX for cows! Who knew! I grew up on a farm, never had problems with cow farts, even when I was milking them by hand, yes we hand milked 6 cows, sold the cream, drank the milk and used the cream as well on the farm, and my mom could cook a meal that made your mouth water from miles away. When we at last sold the farm and moved to town, mom was hired to cook in various cafe's around town, she was in great demand!
I remember back in the early 1970 s I would ask my mom and dad to let me stay in the family camping tint over night in the back yard so I could scan the air waves ,them 9. V batteries would last all night boy that was fun !!!
Those blue Panasonic batteries almost never leak. If you are going to leave batteries in a radio, these blue Panasonic batteries are the ones to leave in them.
Theys are quite resilient, but it's still NEVER a good idea to leave them in, and forget. I've had a couple of those dollar store Panasonic's blue batteries leak. Shango has even said many times, don't leave any batteries in your electronics.
@@bountyhunter4885 I generally do not leave batteries in my electronics when not in regular use. I said in my comment, "If you are going to leave batteries in a radio..." IOW, you shouldn't do it, but if you do, these are the best ones. They have been around a long time. I have bought quite a few electronic devices with these batteries in them. Never once have I found one that leaked. Compare them to modern alkalines. They are near guaranteed to leak. The name brand doesn't matter, they all do it.
I can see the use of 2SB56,2SB54 Japanese transistors in the AF stages, which the 'Sanyo Transcontinental' radios use too. I imagine the RF/IF stages use some '2SA' transistors made by 'Toshiba', possibly 2SA170. The 'Sanyo' brand, several marketed in the United States as 'Channel Master' radios are noted for their AM sensitivity. Superheterodyne reception at its best..!
❤ I Robot! Now thats a kick ass station right there. Kudos on the AP Pink Floyd knowledge. He was influential in many artist's albums. Glad you found some good content on AM. I'm spoiled where I'm at.
What a Great Radio & reception! No matter information Learned, I appreciate it. We know who's going to Jammin' when 'gone Underground'. 8:02 'Since 2016 Tulare Lake has been converting *LA [County] human sewage' into "high-grade organic fertilizer".* Is that why the *Jungle's Overgrown?* Contaminates waters means NOT good for Your Food!
In the 70's there used to be a classic rock out of Juarez called XROCK 80 of course at 80 on the dial, I could get it all the way up in North Dakota back then, but when we lived in El Paso, we listened to it all the time.
I had the experience of listening locally XEMMM with grounding issues noise four yearsago, nice music, and also some ham radio interference on it, glad still on air
Greetings to the Lady from North Peak Adventures 👏 It is interesting that every time I see a partial reflection of Shago in an object, I have the impression that I see a completely different person. Weird.
Way back in 86 I drove my car to Hollywood Fla. I pick up Wnbc 66 am it was crystal clear. 1,4000 miles from my home in Nj. Am used to go far. Even though they were a clear channel station
43:02 Love and Rockets "So Alive" (1989) 46:17 Debbie Gibson "Foolish Beat" (1987) Interesting how Oldies 940's antenna pattern is non-directional but it's directional into the US moreso than Mexico. Listening to their online stream and they really do have a wild playlist. Going from "If I Close My Eyes Forever" by Lita Ford and Ozzy Osbourne to "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" by Santa Esmeralda to Pink Floyd's "The Great Gig In The Sky".
@@shango066 Yeah, I was disappointed as well. At times it seemed distorted as well. My guess is the audio source is a radio somewhere in the building rather than directly from the mixer board in the studio.
Hi Shango. Been watching your videos for probably the best part of 12 years now and always love your content! I have a small collection of transistor radios and a pile of nos vacuum tubes that im happy to donate to the channel for use a future video. Are you interested? Cheers.
48:00 Riveting content. I could listen to this all day. AM radio noise on the Shango066 channel. Everyone's going be stealing this content. Expect a big old check from youtube.
42:50......so alive by Love and Rockets. I think after watching your co-horts getting jiggy we now need to see some serious Dan getting down-LMBO!!!!!!!
Please keep the AM radio stuff coming. That Mexican station reminds me of a tropical band (4.8 mhz) station I used to listen to in the late seventies, except they were playing big band and fifties stuff. Odd.
They are already dealing with cow methane. They are raising them in warehouses were the methane can be recovered and the animal wastes can be collected with minimal pollution. There is one such facility not too far from me which is cutting edge. More profitable for the farmer too.
Its CAs insistence on specialized auto fuel which is causing the problem. They don't allow it to be made in the state so its being bussed in from the middle east on huge pollution belching tankers which make far more pollution than the special gas prevents and gives CA such high gas prices.
He's killing it on You Tube. All the folks thinking they need a shelter and AM radio for when the bomb drops demonstrate how little they teach physics in high school. You ain't gonna care about stinking radio for years and years.
Can't remember the last time I heard I Robot on FM, nevermind AM - and with the intro yet? They never do that. Seems you gotta drive out in to the dessert to find AM worth listening to. When I DX on the winter nights it's all political talk radio and religious wingnuts. Your song was from Love & Rockets.
There may be a new sport similar to DX'ing, involving keeping track of all of the pirate radio stations popping up on the left coast. Seeing that the guvment is too worried about roads being ray-cyst, they seem to be ignoring anything else, like, actual on the book law violations.
@@directcurrent5751 I wouldn't say you could do it with"no hassle". just look at all that shadow banning that's going on , not to mention censorship. If you do not align with their ideology your message will not get out. That is painfully obvious in this day and age.
@@directcurrent5751 The "interwebs" are politically controlled , patrolled and filtered for comments, with the broadcaster more likely than not leaving an IP trail . Pirate AM and FM broadcasts are harder to track, and take a concerted effort to locate, that is seemingly not prioritized at this moment.
30:00 It's hard not to notice the superior sound of the Motorolas. You could listen to talk on any of them, but music would be hard to take on any but the Motorolas, with the Webcor a distant second.
