I worked for IHC in the 70s and these were abundant at the time. They were rugged little trucks. We would tow semis in the shop with them in low range. By 1970 you could get one with a 304 v8. When the scout 2 came out they became rust buckets. I'd love this one
Yes dad always liked 1st gen scouts uncle had a few 2nd gen and they had electrical problems one a scout 2nd gen 4cyl would cut out in fog / heavy moisture and 6 cylinder had gremlins though not as bad deisile one was great but way ahead / behind its time
Grew up in scout 80s when dad and uncle came back from veitnam we were only family with a 4WD in small town in commiefornia remember dad swapping rearend to ford 9 inch(Kept smoking dana whatever 44 or something ) and he had another one before that (i Was really little ) with boss 302 he said adapter came from JCWHITNEY .Bounced all over Nevada ghost towns in early 70s in them miss those days alot .Had one in Montana when i was teenager with a 225 lazy 6 with radiator mounted in front of core support that was a JCWHITNEY mount and had another one half roof later with a warn overdrive had 4 shifter levers still find them here in Nevada pretty rust free but need complete rebuild ,all of mine had the 152s except one with 327 that was stolen not long after i bought it never recovered ,sad the day IHC died heard it was union problems .Could go on and on one of mine was ex military with stainless steel gas tanks with only 17000 miles on it bought it off next door neighbor of people i was doing roof for another half roof that was towed for hunting from California to washington every year had original fuelpump with glass bowl that was cracked think i paid 300 bucks for it and bypassed fuelpump with electric one .god times were eisier back then miss the smell of 90 wheight oil

You can't walk out the front door anymore unless you have on $5000 worth of jogging clothes and another $2000 dollars of heart rate equipment strapped on to tell you whether you are keeping up with someone else's ideal opinions on how to do the ultimate workout once or twice around the block then go put it all away. A cherried out Scout 80 body on a 2001 Jeep whatever manufactured in Japan . I guess the two stories somewhat match.
You are incorrect. The Scout was extremely capable off road, without the computerized nonsense in today's 4X4s. Granted, it is not as fast on the highway as today's vehicles, but 45 mph is a truly false statement. Your opinion of the original Scout 80 is apparently based on second-hand, historical opinion. I grew up with an original '64 Scout (I was 16 when my family purchased one new) and it was unstoppable off road and would hold 60 on the highway. Newer is not always better. Putting a Jeep chassis under a Scout body is not only cheating, it shows disrespect for the Scout and its intended purpose. You are typical of those who do not respect or understand older vehicles or their design.
I’ve got a 67, and 74. I agree. These kids keep fucking them up with new crap. They were built heavy, and minimalistic for a reason. Farmers need to depend on their equipment, not have to run down to the parts store or they wouldn’t have wanted it.
Al Stirbens I had a 1967 with a V8. It was my first vehicle in back in 1973. Lord do I miss it and always have. Paid $600 dollars for it. Man it would go anywhere. I never could get mine over 58 mph. Didn’t matter! There was nothing I couldn’t fix on it. Bygone days
Making those old tanks makes them vulnerable. Hard to fix in the middle of nowhere without a parts store. There’s a good reason they were designed the way they were. Farmers fix shit cheap as possible. If they built them like crap today, the smart frugal farmer wouldn’t want one. People just can’t get that shit through their heads. They were built by a tractor company, not a compact car company. Stop fucking them up !
