I used to own that, bought it at a music store in Longview Washington in 1982, and sold it to Norm in 1984 (for $1500), it can be seen in Norms book on page 77, the music store had changed out the original Fender flat wounds, putting them in the case, and in the process of putting on new roundwounds, they took off the mutes, and the gold paint stuck to three of the mutes, pulling the finish off the body, the mutes were in the case also and you could see how each one could fit back into it's spot with the paint chips lining up, at the time my partner and I had 6 different custom color clay dot jazz basses, and this one was by far the best playing of all, with a perfectly straight neck. I believe it is Shoreline Gold, as we had other pre-CBS Fender guitars in Shoreline that were the same color, an exceptional original example that just happens to play and sound fabulous also.

3:00 "You had Foam Green, you had Surf Green...." Yes! The official vintage Fender color back then was Foam Green, NOT Seafoam Green. Foam Green is the actual name on the old color charts, but everyone calls it Seafoam Green. Thanks, Mark!

Hello Mark, I have been researching and I found an official Fender Custom Color chart from 1963. The only gold from 1963 was Shoreline gold, so this bass had to be Shoreline, and not Harvest gold. I am not saying the rarity of Harvest gold swayed Norm's decision, but you know :)

That's something, ain't it? Spend a lot of money on a bass from 1963 that looks brand new. Or spend a lot of money on a brand new bass from 2017 that's a relic edition that's made to look like it's been played hard for 54 years. I dunno. Me, I'll take pristine like new every time and take care of it and let it age naturally over time. Relic is for posers. This bass is effing beautiful - somebody loved this bass. Thanks Mark!
