1963 HITS ARCHIVE: Sally Go ‘Round The Roses - Jaynetts (a #1 record--45 single version)

Sally, Go ‘Round The Roses (Sanders-Stevens) by The Jaynetts, conducted by Artie Butler, produced by Abner Spector
Creative sound engineering distinguished this unusual ‘girl group’ hit. Some reissues are missing the organ track or maintain a (less-dramatic) uniform volume level throughout. Label time of 2:38 was incorrect…probably intentionally in order to attract initial airplay (not an unusual practice in those days, as records running longer than three minutes were generally not favored by Top-40 radio).
Pop Chart Peaks: Music Vendor 1, Billboard 2, Cash Box 3 - R&B Chart Peak: 4
THE 1963 HITS ARCHIVE - here in one place, a good-quality library of original-release-version best-sellers and songs that made an impact that were either released or enjoyed a major chunk of their popularity within the calendar year 1963 (some were recorded in 1962).

Wow. My sister had this record and my other sister played it repeatedly. I don't know why by that label scared me as a three year-old. Note that Phil Spector produced this under the alias "Abner" for some reason.

@@platterjockey The logo is a boxing glove, as in the word "tough", or the misspelled "tuff" as the label describes itself. Somehow, for some reason the label logo reminded me of Popeye's fist. The label was owned by Anber Spector (no relation to Phil) and Zell Sanders, who also owned the J&S label, which issued the original copies of "Over The Mountains, Across The Sea" by Johnnie & Joe.

Dissected this song on a road trip with a group of lady friends yearrrrrs ago.. Conclusion: Sally was BROKEN. Had been wronged by her lover boy. Lover talked her into getting abortion that she didn't want. He convinced her that they would marry after abortion. (in 63 that was a Scarlet Letter). However, lover dumped her after abortion and planned marriage with Another Girl. Sally kills him and plants a rose garden in memory of both her aborted baby and her lover. Sally's inner voice is telling her not to go downtown to police and confess the crime of murder. Inner voice is trying to convince her that she was justified for the murder because the Saddest Thing In The Whole Wide World Is To See Your Baby With Another Girl. So, Sally Don't You Go Downtown, Just Go Round the Roses that you planted, just Sit and Cry. Sally, Let Your Hair Hang Down that you've had covered since ordeal with both babies, cry and pour your soul out Round The Roses because Roses Won't Tell Your Secrets.....Only Your Soul Will Ever Know. Wheew🤔!!!!!!!!!!!

a candidate for the earliest psychedelic song, covered by Great Society in 1966 . It is perceived much more on mono ( like there) than in stereo.... ah the genius was not Phil, but his brother Abner haha

One of the greatest mystery songs ever written! "...Sally go 'round the pretty roses...[fade-out]" Did she need to be placed in a mental asylum (walking aimlessly around its rose garden), losing her baby after seeing him/her with another girl downtown? After hearing this on the radio for the first time in late-Fall '63, it was perfect for Halloween season, it was so spooky, even dangerous sounding on what was going on with Sally! "..."Sally Go 'Round the Roses" was unlike other pop songs of the day, with a spooky, even ominous, musical ambiance heightened by the sometimes odd and opaque lyrics, which gave the song a mysterious feeling that probably accounted in part for its popularity, and which has led to speculation on the meaning of the song." --Wiki

The one without the organ was a true stereo mix from the 1990's found by MCA Records, who bought out Tuff Records. For many years, this mono version with the organ riff (played by Artie Butler) was on many oldies compilations in mono or rechanneled stereo. Tuff records was distributed by Chess Records in Chicago, Illinois. The label had two big hits: this one and "Smokey Places" by The Corsairs. Drummer Buddy Miles, who was a session drummer at the time was the drummer on this hit song.

@@robertorick6383 Thank you for the reply. We grew up on the local radio stations in Buffalo with the organ background and I got used to that. Hearing both, I like the organ background. but I also played Smokey Places a lot on the jukebox. Wasn't the group the Corsairs and not the Corvairs? Good listening.

I wish you'd played the B side after this. It's an orchestral version, but I guess you'd know this, although people who don't own the single probably never heard it.
@robertorick6383
@robertorick6383 4 месяца назад
Side 2 is just simply "Sally Go 'Round The Roses" with The Jaynette's vocals toned way down to almost sound like an instrumental, so it's similar to side 1. Tuff Records tried to erase the vocals, but if you listen with headphones, it's no use. You can still hear an echo of them singing. The B-side was jokingly credited to "Sing along without The Jaynettes."
@YY4Me133
@YY4Me133 4 месяца назад
I didn't have headphones, and sang along with it, so maybe I didn't hear the voices, or maybe I just don't remember hearing them; it's been many years since I've played my 45's.
@robertorick6383
@robertorick6383 4 месяца назад
@@YY4Me133 It does sound like an instrumental version of the song with The Jaynette's vocals wiped off, but the engineer didn't wipe it off cleanly enough. You can still hear a trace of The Jaynette's vocals buried in the mix. The idea was borrowed from Mitch Miller and his sing-a-long albums. You, the listener were to sing a long to the instrumental melody, thus the unusual billing on the label. The group's non-charting follow-up 45, "Snowman, Snowman, Sweet Potato Nose" also had a sing along without The Jaynettes instrumental track on the B-side.

There are many interpretations of this song. Here's mine: This is about a lesbian love triangle. My proof? The line "To see your baby with another girl". Sally is going around the roses because she is trying to hide the pain of losing her girlfriend. We can see this in the line: "Roses they can't hurt you". We can also see that no-one understands that Sally is a lesbian. I mean, there's a line there about nobody knowing that Sally is a lesbian. The roses are a metaphor for heaven, because Sally wants to kill herself because she is a lesbian. Whew! That was long!
@lapacesiaconvoi
@lapacesiaconvoi 4 месяца назад
sally is 'the other girl' but unaware the new bf already has a lover. the lover sees them from a distance. she plots to befriend sally and discover her vulnerabilities. sally confides how much she loves roses but is allergic. the first lover lures and convinces her she can enjoy being near the roses to not only enjoy but tell all her secrets to them. Sally goes close to the roses revealing secrets then has an anaphylactic reaction . no one will find her until it's too late.
