On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 9-24-21.
We're looking at a 1964 Buick LeSabre Estate Wagon in Sun Burst Yellow Paint. The car comes with the 425 CI “Nail Head” V8 engine.
The car's Owner is Buz. Buz’s had this car since 2021. He shares he loves different and uniqu cars, and this Wagon was formerly owned by a Buick Mechanic who added all the Dealer options he could purchase, so this car is “loaded” with options. As a bonus, he added a “Nail Head” performance engine too.
ENJOY!

Lou, what a gr8 feature. Been a loooooong time since I've seen one of these - never with the wire wheel covers. 425 is pretty rare too - biggest of the Nail head design, produced from '63-'66. From the hey-day era of station wagons. 👌🏻

I think it's the same engine that Buick put into the 65 Riviera Grand Sport. It looks like it has 2 carburetors under the air cleaner there. The Nailhead is a design feature that creates huge amounts of Torque.

Beautiful example. The color change and spoke wheel covers really make the car eye-catching. I personally have begun to love classic station wagons. They're pieces of "mid-century" suburban history. I remember when I was a kid in the '70's, many people began to use these to use as a hauler for construction materials and tools. They would drive them until the bodies rotted away. By the way Lou, I believe the large lamps on the front fenders were optional cornering lights.

That is an INCREDIBLY beautiful station wagon! And so many options on it too; note those power window switches! It must been a wonderful car for a lucky family back in the day. You hardly saw very many Buick station wagons like this even when they were new. Today, this is a sight to behold. This was the last full-sized Buick wagon until 1970. Thanks again Lou! Buick did GM '63-4 fullsize look better to me than Chev/Olds/Pontiac. Straight sides really set it off. Reverse was true in '65-6. Buick got its mojo back with the "Every Inch a Buick" 1967-70 theme.

I have always loved station wagons, although my family never owned one. What a beautiful long top, as they used to be called! Seems funny that younger people from the 1970’-1990’s balked at driving or owning a station wagon, yet today drive SUV’S. I am just a little surprised that this particular wagon didn’t come with the third rear seat. Some wagons had a pair of third seats facing one another, and others had a rear-facing third seat. These were fun, fun cars as a kid to ride in. Thanks Lou & Buzz for a great memory!

I’ve seen this car in person at Buick National events, and most people just stare at that super wildcat engine with two 4 barrel carburetors. I wonder how long the muffler on that single exhaust would hold together if someone opened that baby up!! Wagons are made to haul things. This sedately beast would haul ass as well as a lot of cargo! Thanks for a great car story Lou. As usual, you bring us the very best stuff.

This is a very unique station wagon. There were some things on this Buick LeSabre Estate Station Wagon that I notice are unique. One of these is a tilt steering wheel. Until this video I did not know that a tilt steering wheel option existed in 1964. Also this is the first time I have seen a purse hanger option on the dashboard. Also it was unusual to see a vehicle with a large 425 cubic inch V8 with a single exhaust pipe. Since I was born in 1951 I grew up in a family of 6 children where my parents owned a number of station wagon cars over the years.

Hi, Lou! Yep! Here it is, the "My Car Story" I've been waiting for! This big beautiful Buick is a big bright ray of sunshine in that Sun Burst Yellow 😎, especially for an avid wagon fan and historian like me! (Matches perfectly with the house, too!) Never mind the horn, I think just the car's sheer presence will warn people to get out of the way! LOL! 😀 BTW, 1964 was the last year Buick built a full-size wagon until 1970. Same story with Oldsmobile, until 1971. Not really sure exactly why the Estate Wagon and Fiesta were retired, but that was the same year Buick and Olds brought out the Sport Wagon and the Vista Cruiser, which were based on the Skylark and F-85 intermediates and were famous for their raised rear roof section with tinted glass panels. They were instantly popular, so my guess is Buick and Olds simply deemed the full-size wagons unnecessary. Also, the headlamp dimmer is called Autronic Eye. Many thanks to you and Buz for this magical cruise aboard the Banana Boat! Would love to have him aboard in our wagon club!

Wow, Lou, a four-door Buick Wagon! A few of us prefer this type of car to most sports cars. Perhaps it's because it's what we always had in the 1960s and 1970s. It has something to do with those memories, but I also prefer older and newer cars with four doors. I did go 120 mph once, but it was in a four-door wagon! In 1968 I was given a 1961 Pontiac Grand Safari at the age of 15. It needed some work but was in great shape Cleaned up really nice. Grey with a white top, fire engine red interior and a 389 4v. After a carb rebuild and exhaust and tires,it was ready to go. Unfortunately, I was showing some friends how fast I could go around the back of my dad’s gas station, lost control leaving the asphalt onto the crushed stone and smashed into the cement building and destroyed the whole front end. It was pretty similar looking to this car.

Saludos!

body built by A.O. Smith in Ionia Mich., the Ionia works produced automobile bodies, components, and finished vehicles for virtually all the Detroit automakers. Between 1949 and 1964, all Buick station wagon bodies were made here, more than 140,000 of them, and Olds and Pontiac wagon bodies, too. Corvette and Continental Mark II bodies were also built at Ionia, and the factory also served as the final assembly plant for Shelby Mustangs from 1968 through 1970.

I haven’t seen one of these in a blue moon. Buick didn’t make a full sized wagon from ‘65-69, so people who bought these new probably kept them for several years. You had tremendous brand loyalty in those days. I remember several people in the small town in Wisconsin where I grew up being fiercely loyal to Buicks.

@@loucostabile it’s interesting how in 89 it was considered just as much a classic as it is today, 34 years later. My partner was a Service Manager at a GM dealer, so I didn’t need to worry about maintenance etc and used it as a daily driver. Unfortunately, let it go in the early nineties, as I went overseas for a few years. Definitely miss that car though - it was silver with red interior.
