1964 Ford Fairlane Sports Coupe K-Code 289 Muscle Car Of The Week Video #66
Ford built muscular versions of nearly every car they made during the 1960's, and this 1964 Fairlane 500 Sports Coupe is a great example of how they turned a hum-drum family commuter into a stylish mini-muscle car that packed a serious punch. This Sports Coupe escaped the fate of a straight 6 in favor of a Hi-Po 289 V8 screwed to a 4-speed manual box. The K-Code version churned out 271 HP through increased compression, free-breathing intake and exhaust, a solid cam, and other hop-up goodies. The added bonus is the good looks of the Sports Coupe, wearing a slick Raven Black suit with a bright red interior. Extra-cool is the fact that it is all original and unrestored. It's our Muscle Car Of The Week from the Brother's Collection.

It leans somewhat on sharp turn maneuvers, but what a car. It dispels the disparaging humor behind Found On the Road Dead. This is Ford Living!

My neighbor bought new same car but Cobra equipped from factory. His was a gold color, same interior but tan in color. Loved that car. Have never seen another Cobra equipped version. Man was that car fast! Remember racing a Cobra on the Long Beach freeway. The Fairlane held its own against that Cobra. Ahh, memories 😊

One of the best of the Ford small block engines along with the 1969-70 BOSS 302 and 1971 BOSS 351. The K Code 289 responded really well to aftermarket performance mods. It wasn't very difficult to coax 375-400 horsepower out of a K-Code 289. I love the 65 Comet 289 B/FX factory drag car in the Brothers Collection. Couldnt believe it the first time I heard those cars ran in the 11's. I never fully realized the high performance potential of the 289 before I first saw that car. They could compete even with the 427 Thunderbolt and A/FX Comet 427. Thats pretty amazing in my book for such a small displacement V8

Took a LOT of hours, parts, and rpm to get 400. I raced one in 64.

Much easier today. 👍

@@hotrodray6802 Yes 400 out of stock short block and heads is not all that easy. And can be a good way to end up with broken pistons. One good thing the hipo had was the larger rod bolts. As the small ones would grenade at 400 hp and rpm.

@@helpful5539 K codes made 50-60 more hp than the base 289s in the Mustang. The power to weight ratio was more than acceptable

No the k code was for Ford... Mercury's hypo was a different letter

Comet only offered the D and A codes but the VIN said K. There was no HIPO 289 Comets. I had a new 3 black 4 spd D (labeled K).

There ain't no hipo car that is a muscle car. Not much more power than a regular 289 4bbl, no 271hp. Same intake as the 4bbl car, not a high rise. Same 4bbl carb, just a manual choke. Only thing it really had for power was a mild cam and slightly freer flowing e mans.
