When I was 16 there was a 64 Galaxie convertible at the Shell station where I worked and it was for sale for $40 (the new $1,000). It had a 390 and I think the problem was the power steering was leaking. My Dad Would NOT let me buy it!! I had the money but noooOoo I wasn't allowed. I always liked that model out of all the early big Fords. Nice to see yours with a beefy motor!!!
Our family back in the sixties had a '64 Galaxie 500, solid black 4 dr., gray interior, 390, fully optioned hardtop. Our family took a trip with it from La. to Calif. and back in the summer of '64. It was soooooo pretty. I wish someone had made a home video of it back in the day. With the 390, it drank gas like crazy, but who was concerned - especially not my dad - when he had performance in a "family" car and gas was thirty something cents per gallon!
I've owned one of these 64's for 50 years...427 dual quad 4 speed convertible.......been a great car......The only problem I see with yours, is the horrible paint job.... rest of it looks pretty good.....
I was 14 when these were new, I always loved the 500 XL. My Dad bought a light blue 9 passenger wagon with the 352 V8 , automatic and AM radio new in 1964 because I was the oldest of 6 kids. He drove us to Anchorage, Alaska in it because he was in the USAF and he was transferred. 😊
I have a Wimbledon white 64 Galaxie XL as well, 428,tri power c6. Too much stuff to list as I've owned it 34 years. Just wanted to say I like your car. Everywhere you take these cars they get compliments which never gets tiering.
When racing a ford cruise o matic, Hold in manual low When shifting to 2nd, move shifter up one notch (for the signal to shift), then back in manual low position. You’re now revving that big block where it likes to breathe. For 3rd, simply shift up a notch. You’re welcome
I remember some guy in high school with a 65 galaxy..I think? But it was a galaxy 500 and I'm pretty sure a 352. I took notice one day he was leaving the high school parking lot. I experienced a little of the same thing with a high performance 390. I prefer the 390 but the 352 is definitely no slouch. Never drove a 428. I believe that was his name.
My 64 Galaxie with the correct white speedo gear that you need, not the red one you have, with the same height tires 235/70 and 3.89 , 9 inch, does 3000 at 60 mph. Speedo is off compared to gps by 3mph high. You must have 3.89 or 4.10 gears.
Stellar styling., inside, outside, Ford could have frozen styling with this year. Love the tops of the back seats and all that chrome and lighting for the passengers. DAMN! The fact that it's got a lot of power under the hood, and the iconic hood scoop, well that's just the gravy! Would cruise this even if it had a little six cylinder!
It’s not second to third, it’s 1st to second. Holds in first till like 1500 rpm. Could that be the linkage too? I feel like it’s the vacuum modulator. Thanks!
@virginiagalaxie697 If you want it to shift earlier, turn the screw in the vacuum tube on the vacuum modulator counter clockwise 1/4 turn, give it a drive.
Try....to...talk... Slower...... I..... have .....all....the...time....in...the....world. I will make sure the next time I see one of your videos pop up in my algorithm. I will never click on it. I don't have the goddamn patience for someone's brain that is capable taking so long to get out a thought !
I purchased a 65 Galaxie 500 LTD full rotisserie restoration. Factory 352 auto. AC. 66k original miles. Love the Galaxies. My 1st car in high school was 68 Galaxie. Just retired and going to enjoy it. It's not going to just sit in a garage. Love your 64
i think it has more in it. and your timing needs work less base and more advance in the weights. just as your done spining the tires i belive i herd some detonation bad. i drive q birds and 428s hard to the floor basically and i belive with a little tune you will have a neck snapper.
If you're about in the mid 5s, considering the size of that Sheriff Andy Taylor land yacht, that's pretty righteous. I dig it. Sounds really hairy. Cool lookin mill with that funky air cleaner. Being a middle boomer, I remember these beasts when I was a kid.
I honestly thought this car would have gone faster than it would. I built a good 390 for my 64 4 door, kept the stock 4 barrel 352 intake, stock exhaust manifolds, true 10:1 compression, .040" quench with a 500 CFM 4 barrel, 2200 stall converter and 3.70 gears and I am pretty sure it would have ran right past this car. But man, have I left some people scratching their heads, because it looks like a bone stock 352 under the hood.
I would have to see that 0-60 in the mid 5's to believe it, so until a see an official trap speed printout from a drag strip I'm calling BS on that Mid 5"s.
Get a phone mount and concentrate on driving. Do what the car wags did, get a digital watch with the stopwatch function. Take the strap off. Set your course, put the watch between your teeth and when you choose go, bite the watch to start the clock, same when you cross the mark. There is your stopwatch.
Well, it is 60 over, it does not have performance heads, they’re the heads that came on it and have not been worked, and there is a mild cam. It is currently around 440 cid. You’re right. It is not completely stock.
Nice car! The Ford 428 didn't come out until 1968. Older brother had a built one in a 1968 Mach 1. One of the fastest Fords I have ever been in. Your car was apparently put together to go fast. Thumb up for sharing. 😎
Try turning the screw in the trans modulator counter clockwise 1/4 turn. See how it acts. I wish I had that hood and the XL interior in my white 64 fastback.
Thanks for sharing. That car sounds bad ass! I'd love to have a car like that. The only con to the car is the cream color which I know is the original paint job for the year. However, it would look better in candy apple red or a blue metalic color.
My friend Greg(RIP) had just finished the same vehicle with a dual quad 428 , same color w/ convertible top. Two blocks from his house on his maiden voyage first time taking it out, an elderly woman ran a stop sign at high speed and completely totaled both vehicles and put him in ICU😢😢😢. That happened in the early 80s.
Check modulator for vac leak..my 65 galaxie was getting to where it was shifting the same as yours..the rubber line was cracked.i changed it and it was cured..mine has 390 with C 6..i put a steel braided line on it with avaition clamps..i have a buddy that works on small aircraft engines..his idea..
I would give you the 5 and probably then some, get some good rubber on there and work at it & I say low 4 second range. Those Ford transmissions are famous for sticking in third gear, usually the modulator valve, you won't go wrong with flushing the transmission and replacing the filter, clean always works better.
i had a 64 2 dr. with a 390 and it had a stock 4speed with stock bench seat. i could get 95-100mph in a 1/4 mile. thats when i was in high school n i only paid $100 for it. i pounded the hell out it. n it took it.
We didn't know there was a 428 in a 64 Galaxie, but we do know for sure there was a 427 in a 64 Galaxie and the 427 had more power than a 428 for sure. I know this for sure due to buying a new 427.
That thing would almost certainly accelerate faster if you eased into it not allowing wheelspin and allow whatever squat it wants to do before reaching wide open throttle. Also takes up the slack in the drivetrain and motor mounts less violently. Might have to try repeatedly to find just short of breaking the tires loose.
When I was 6 years old my father bought a 1964 Galaxie z code ( 300 hp 390 ) with a 4 speed. Back then they had a dealer accessory to install a two 4 bbl setup. He had that installed. Car ran very well.
Don't get me wrong. My first car was a 63 Ford Galaxy 500 2 door hardtop with a 390, white over red, so I recognize yours and I see the floor shift, but where's the clutch pedal on your 64? I used to be able to see the gas gauge move, but gas was only .26 a gallon then. Wish I still had it. Take my advice - DON'T EVER SELL YOURS! HAVE YOUR SON BURY YOU IN IT!
I was a senior in high school in 1964 and had a classmate who drove a '64 Galaxy 500. He let me drive the car one day and damn, It had some amazing acceleration.
Only half of the 0 - 60 run is there and it's at 09:35... he needs to learn how to feather the exhilarator pedal off the line for a quick time... it's probably about 9 seconds...
Had 13 1967 galaxy 500 and 2 1967 Ltd's one with the 428 four barrel the rest where 390 cars but that one ltd was amazing fast had the speedo buried at 120 and still had half the gas pedal sold it because I was 18 and I thought I just might kill myself in this thing sure do wish I hadn't sold that car good looking ride you have good luck with it
My parents had a 64 XL galaxie convertible 352 swing away steering wheel. Beautiful car. I was in high school. I had a 63 1/2 galaxie red , black interior bench seat 4speed 390 high performance. What I would give to have that back. Also have some great memories in the back seat on a Friday night. But, then I also remember the 1-A. Draft card.. joined the navy.
Nice car. But why is the brake pedal bouncing all over the place?? You can see it at around 9:30-9:40ish. That would concern me a bit. Still awesome car no doubt
You should pull the speedometer cable and lube it with graphite then get the right speedometer gear for your tire size/gear. It’ll stop the bounce and give you an accurate speed.
Lol! No it weighs about 3750 with the factory motor. I’m guessing in its current form it’s about 3900. Ya know, it’s funny, a stock 7.0 liter (427 cid) is about 335 hp. Stock naturally aspirated 6 cylinder cars today are making that. Turbos, superchargers, Coyotes, built LS, motors are insane. The goal is to push a car that is as long as an F-150 along to make it fun. The torque is a different story. 440 ft/lbs from the factory almost 60 years ago is pretty solid. Thanks for the comment!
The 428 was engineered to be a weak alternative to a real engine, the 427 Ford FE. They are no way alike except they came from the same FE family. The 427 has a much better bore to stroke ratio. The 427 was built to haul ass. The 428 was built to BS people into buying it as a fast and powerful street engine which it never was.
@@virginiagalaxie697 jack up the rear wheels, turn a tire 1 revolution and count how many times the driveshaft spins, a 3.70 gear will turn the driveshaft just about 3 and 3/4 turns and so on
Loooooool. So true! Check out the latest videos. I’ve got brand new stewart Warner gauges in it. Can’t do anything about the gas… thanks for the comment. See you out there!!
I used a satellite gps app to determine where 60 mph is on my Speedo. I stopped the video the moment I hit 75 (where 60 is by gps). Then I just watched the video and measured the time from start to finish. It’s right at 6 seconds. Is it precise? No. Does it give me a ball park figure? Yep. Is it click bait? Wow, what a shitty thing to say! I’m sorry you feel that way. But, I’m going to go back to having fun with this. You need to lighten up.
We had a 65' with a 289 engine and 3 speed manual transmission. No power anything and it would fly. That was the car I learned to drine in. I wish I had it now.
