I do not own the copyrights to this video. This is the 1964 riverside 500 that I had on a VHS. It comes from a VHS set called "The Golden Era of Racing". If you know anything about this set please tell me because I would like to buy more volumes from the set.

"Little" Joe Weatherly was my Mom's cousin. My Grandfather always talked about his nephew the racer, who died out in California, whenever I talked about wanting to race. I didn't realize, until about 5 years ago, just who he meant.

I was at this race sitting outside of turn #6. The sound track doe's not convey the reality of un-muffled monster 427 V8's, the ground shook & the sound was tremendous!

this was the first track i raced on back in the 70`s......ran formula 'c' open wheel before going to stock! unfortunately my racing career lasted only 5 yrs.......i do agree with curtis johnson those cars back then were really loud and they made yer insides quiver ....loved every minute of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lol thats why the Wood Brothers were so amazing back then... the fact that they got 2 tires on and fuel in under 20 seconds was unheard of. Hell doing that under 40 seconds was considered good.

Look at Ken Miles racing those cars just before the Le Mans GT40/Ferrari fun, and 2 years before he sadly died at the same track. Back when you either had a crew cut and smoke 2 packs of reds a day, or you were a hippy. @3:24 RIP Joe Weatherly, turn 6 claimed a great driver that day. @2:42 Dave MacDonald 4 months later in a bad fiery crash at Indy 500. Lots of greats in this video that ran fast and burned hard.

Big difference in race broadcasting here in Australia. Almost half of this tape was the preliminaries and the rest was overwhelmed by the music. Here major sports events are usually aired live. During the broadcast there are no ads or pre-race bullshit. The networks use these events as a lure to watch other shows that do carry advertising.

I actually really enjoy the music in this clip. I've been looking for the tracks for a year or two now. I've found Born to Run, Data Express, and Stress Factor. Now I'm just looking for the first two and the last two. On a racing note, I really do think Joe could've been an all-time great if not for his crash. He was the second back-to-back champion in NASCAR history, which is absolutely nothing to scoff at.
@superbird4351

Buck Baker was actually the first back to back champ when he won his titles in 1956&57. But nonetheless Joe Weatherly was gone too soon.

I don't know much about the VHS set you speak of but I do know that this was filmed by Dick Wallen, one of the finest cinematographers American racing has ever known. Dick filmed USAC sprints and championship trail events, sports cars, NASCAR and other racing for nearly thirty years. His videos are available through his company, Dick Wallen Productions.
