Great starting point. Since it's a British car, of course it leaks oil from every place it can, but if you are pulling the engine and trans, you can redo all the seals. The front seal on the differential is what is spraying on the underside of the trunk.. New seat foam and covers, new exhaust system. You've got a diamond in the rough. Wonderful car!

My favorite of the TR series! I had a 64 of course that was almost 50 years ago. Defrosting was a bit weak, but I survived! Only problem it ever had was the motor mounts broke, and the carb linkage disconnecting and an in opportune time at 3AM. An officer stopped about an hour later and used his flashlight so I could what the problem was! Cant wait to watch this rebuild!!!

I quite like the idea of slow engine oil leaks providing the car is carefully monitored before and after every run out. At least the cost of some fresh oil is still a lot less than having a very dry and rusty old frame I guess…

I'll be watching, Elin. Nice to see a reasonably well maintained, mostly original TR4. A lot of the projects you will be working through either are or will be things I'm doing on my '62 TR4: negative ground conversion, alternator conversion (installed, but not wired up), electric fan (also installed w/thermistat switch, but not yet wired), etc. I need to do a "tired engine rebuild", too, so your work there will be a very useful guide! My car is in storage right now, but hopefully I can get busy on it in a few months. Cheers!

Pretty solid car. This project won’t require so much welding if any. A fairly light restoration. It will be a fun project.

Looks like another great series! I have a 65 TR4A with a solid rear axle, so a lot of the work you’ll be doing will be similar to work I’ve done too. BTW - I’d recommend adding new front/rear flexible brake hoses to the parts list as they can perish from the inside out. 👍

Good video. I had an early TR4 in 1972 for which I paid 200 dollars. It only had the tonneau top and zero rust. On narrow Georgia highways, the trucks going in the opposite direction sucked the tonneau cover off. It was reliable, but the engine was worn out.

Sure wish I still had my '64 TR4. The reason I got rid of it was the rear crank seal leaked oil and kept ruining clutches. New seals didn't work for long. I hope there are better replacement seals these days.

Elin, this will be fun and informative to watch. The positive ground changeover is something I have no idea what all is involved; good learning experience for me! As to the low compression and oily plugs, would a product like Bardahl's Marvel Mystery oil (or similar) injected into the spark plug hole and left to soak allow the rings to free up possibly? It might be a worthwhile experiment to see if the compression mismatch between the cylinders could be reduced and perhaps save the time/work to do a ring job.

I knew a girl in the 60s. She knew I liked Triumph TR4A cars. She bought one. It worked. Then she became a missionary.

looks like a nice car and from here chassis looks clean as though it might have been restored or stored indoors for a long time....tr4 is a cute shape and despite it being possibly nicer then the TR6 i still prefair the TR6 shape....i suppose because i own one :)

Did you hear me shouting at my monitor screen Elin ? If not , it didn't matter in the end as you've discovered the rear shoes need the clips.. The break shoes are inclined to vibrate a little without them and it does interfere somewhat with drum removal. I owned the same model in 1967 (bought second-hand of course). This example appears to be a very solid car and will no doubt have undergone a few resto's in it's life if it wasn't a resident of California. Taking a look around it with you, brings back many good memories including some of the young ladies sat in the passenger seat back in the day..

I was shouting, too: at the witness marks on the exhaust of the diff nose oil leak and the soot mark on the blowing front silencer! I don't envy Elin working with such a small clearance beneath the car with the engine on! Please keep safe, Elin.

Your going to have to change your channel name to "Oily Beauties". Looks an interesting project, it does worry me to see the brakes shoes fitted incorrectly. Its not a colour I like for a car, but I think when your behind the wheel you dont see too much of it!! Great video, very enjoyable to watch as always. Good luck from Spain!!

Looks pretty nice, a paying job rather than your GT6 is kind of a good thing...maybe you can work it in between Mazda weekends. You are a busy guy, just look after yourself as you work through all of this.

I'm paying close attention to this one... Similar condition to the TR6 I just picked up. I haven't tried to turn it over yet as the battery is no good and it hasn't run since 1992.

Are you still going to show the repair to the GT6 frame? I have a GT6+ frame that has the same issue. It is a spare frame that I have kept hoping to find a Spitfire to put on it. I have two outriggers that are in good shape. I am wondering whether I should repair what is on the frame or change them completely.

I'm not a Triumph man but the rear brake shoes look odd to me. The pads are correctly not centred on the metal shoe itself but shouldn't the maximum area of pad be towards the piston and the end without the pad towards the adjuster? They look upside down to me. Are all four shoes identical or are they installed as a pair of front shoes on one side and a pair of trailing shoes on the L Please look at them again.
