If you're a Ford Mustang enthusiast, you have probably heard other collectors talk about the K-Code Mustang. What was this coveted K-Code Mustang all about, and what made it so different from other models of its time? The K-Code Mustang was a special-edition Mustang made between 1965 and 1967 that came from the factory with a special 289 high-performance cubic-inch engine beneath its hood. In its day, it was quite a beast on the road.
All About the K-Code Ford Mustang Package
Buyers of the GT Equipment Package on their Mustangs could add the K-code option to their new ride for an extra $276 back in 1965. The cost to add this engine to new Mustangs without the GT package was $328. Why was it called "K-Code?" The “K” stood for the engine code on the VIN number of these Mustangs. The K-Code engine was first introduced by Ford in 1963 and was featured in cars such as the Fairlane and the Comet.
Each K-Code Mustang had a special badge on their front fenders that read “HIGH PERFORMANCE 289”. No doubt about it, the K-Code Mustang was all performance. In fact, K-Code Mustangs were not available with air conditioning or power steering. And you couldn’t buy one with an automatic transmission until the 1966 model year. Prior to that, the K-Code Mustangs had only four speeds. The car also came with a shorter warranty than the typical Mustang. K-Code buyers were looking at a three-month or 4,000-mile warranty instead of the standard 12-month or 12,000-mile warranty plan.
People often ask how the K-Code engine was different from the other 289 engines that fell under the D, C and A codes produced from 1965 to 1967 Mustangs. For starters, this engine featured upgraded pistons, cylinder heads, carburetor, lifter heads, and connecting rods. In addition, one look under the hood and you’d notice the chrome air cleaner and valve covers. There was also lettering on top of the air cleaner that read "289 High Performance."
Power Made the Difference in the Ford Mustang K-Code
With an estimated 271-hp engine on board, it was easy to tell this car from other 289 powered Mustangs of the day.
The differences didn’t stop there. In fact, the entire driveline of these cars was designed for performance. We’re talking about a high-performance clutch, drive shaft, rear differential, and suspension. It’s no wonder Shelby put the engine in his racing performance GT350 Mustangs. In fact, the first Shelby Mustang, the Shelby GT350R featured a modified K-Code engine.
These days, collectors of the Ford Mustang look back fondly on the K-Code. As such, these are highly sought-after Ford Mustang models and many collectors are on the hunt for them. Unfortunately, only a limited number of these engines were produced between 1963 to 1967, and there were even fewer K-code Mustangs (only about 13,214 were made). If you own one, you own a valued piece of Mustang history and have a prized classic car commodity on your hands. If you want one, join the club.

Soooo many options with this - All clear, Paint just Half (alternator side), Paint 90% of it stock colors, add small amount of weathering, slide silicon tubes over pug wires for color, the Intake could be further detailed. Again - soooo many options. And the correct internals - a great teaching tool as well. I totally dig the way your's turned out - just enough detail. Seams well worth the price. I've actually been waiting for something EXACTLY like this. Thanks for sharing...

Cool. Mustang's are iconic (except maybe mid 90s lol) and this model is a must buy for any Mustang enthusiast. I see this model and think about a kids go-cart; the lawnmower engine in the back, but this bad boy under the hood, on a mount, so the air cleaner slightly sticks out. Coolest go-cart ever! Great model build, love the Ford blue on the dipstick!

Very nice model, it looks great. One detail conspicuous in its absence is the harmonic damper. The k code Hipo 289 had a thicker damper than a standard 289, so it should have been included. There is certainly enough room for it behind the crank pulley. Aside from that, very realistic depiction of a K code 289.

Is it possible to make a video with all the things you use to make models and explain how to use them like floor polish and black wash and how you make the bottoms of the car look used and what you paint the exhaust with,and how ? All of those topics and more are covered in numerous builds. As you watch older videos on my channel (browse the channel home page) you'll see more and more of it and I revisit it from time to time. After watching your videos it got me really interested in making some kits I love the 60s and 70s muscle cars and nASCAR’s I tried once before but didn’t know the techniques of making them look realistic and they looked crappy once they were finished and I gave up so this sparked my interest again thanks so much for all the tips and looking forward to the new videos you put out thanks again.

Just one thing: the early 260's were black (oil pan), but the 289's were blue (dipstick). A 260 would've had a generator (much larger than an alternator). Nits, I know... The carb coulda' used some gold paint as well, but, all in all, a stellar build as usual!
@hpiguy
@hpiguy 4 года назад
According to the Ford experts the K code 289 in 1965 was black block and pan. I did blue on the dipstick just to draw attention to it but factory perfect accuracy isn't my goal anyway. See below with a pic of a real engine out of the car. www.mustangsplus.com/mpshows/octshow07/

As stated in the painting section, these particular engines had black blocks and oil pans. I had to look that up and ask a few Ford experts make sure. But when making yours, any color you want is fine. Hence why I did the dipstick handle in blue.
@dennismack9335
@dennismack9335 4 года назад
Cool model buuut... molding the carb in with the intake was a mistake, and that with almost no detail. Like the 1/4 scale Testor’s hemi there are no intake or exhaust passageways in the heads. They could have at least indicated them somehow. The oil pan could have been clear to see better the crank along with an oil pickup. The alternator as a motor is clever though as is a rubber timing belt in lew of a chain. It is a nice model with decent engineering with it’s all screw assembly but at $180 it’s a bit simplistic. All we need is a clear transmission.

You should get a second kit,and prime it;and then paint it with Ford/GM engine blue ceramic & enamel engine paint from Duplicolor.Assemble the block first;bedore painting it with the Ford/GM engine blue.That way all of the parts can still move;when you take apart the painted block,to finish assembling the all of the internal parts.

Got mine together last night. Was running fine for about 10 seconds then the motor seemed to get stuck and stopped the crank. I thought it somehow jumped timing so it redid the whole thing and it is still just randomly stopping. I have to turn it off, and manually with my hand turn the crank pulley and I hear a click. Maybe it's a gear tooth but I didn't see anything wrong with any of the gears when I put it together. The other thing is the rubber timing belt seems to walk across the cam drive gear and almost slips off but the timing cover prevents it from completely separating from the gear. Not very happy considering this kit was 200 bucks. Please if anyone has advice, much appreciated

could you paint the engine and heads ford engine blue? and would it still work?

I think I would paint one side complete and then leave the other side clear.

Yep the old Revell Visible V8 come to mind. For the money the distributor cap and alternator, being major focal points, both look really really horrid. And another item..where's the plastic gauge?

hook it up to a 14.8 volt lipo and power a push mower

I would love to do this but I'm really trying to find a engine that would not time out after a couple seconds and just keep running while sitting on my desk at work? Any suggestions?

Just jumper the circuit board and have it bypass it to run 24-7.

Nice build. Wow 2 ads on RU-vid and I wasn't even half way through the video.

Thanks for watching! YT controls the ads, bills have to be paid for those big server farms. Such is the way of a free service. :)

That's a nice model and looks pretty easy to put together. The carburetor is shameful though lol

Just my opinion. The oil pan and the top of the air cleaner would look good In Ford engine blue

In 1966 it would have been painted Ford Blue. In 1965 the engine block, heads, intake, and oil pan were black. The air cleaner and valve covers were painted gold except for the K Code which were chrome.
