Waylon's 1965 Mustang with a stout little SBF Windsor Combo on the Dyno. Tried a few different things to see the effects on HP. Best numbers were 363 horse and 331 torque to the wheels.
That’s probably about 400 hp at the crank, taking into account the parasitic losses in the drivetrain at a conservative 15%. Nice build- good combination.👍🏻
Hahaha, yes. He dynoed this car around the time he was filming Point Break. Watch the video where Gary takes it to the track. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kciGSxJmF9M.htmlsi=RjFlQKSTYNxaQBFr
Great rwhp numbers for a NA small cubic inch engine. Question: Did you guys look at afr nuumbers when you uncorked the headers? Would have expected more than a 3hp gain. Nice car!
I was also surprised the mufflers didn’t kill more power than they did. I was logging AFR during all those pulls. Don’t remember if there was much difference from the earlier pulls.
Had Waylon used a lighter rotating assembly and shut the alternator off at wot.....he'd seen 400rwhp. I ran an old Mexican block this way from 2000 to 2005ish. Ditched the DSS slugs for a custom set of JE's and a Bill Miller aluminum rod, still stock crank(for a little while), and wot cut out for the field to the alternator.....435rwhp at 7k. Miss those days. My 93 Cobra has been laid up too long.
Eh....but cutting the alternator off at WOT is free in most cases. The SRP Pro, MAHLE, and JE are the lightest off the shelf units(in ascending order of price) I've used. $700 - $1k with rings. The Eagle and Molnar H-beam rods come in a lightweight version for $750ish. SCAT's 9000 cast crank is lighter than a stock crank(last time I used one anyway), and runs around $300 maybe.....so $2k for a lightweight build on a budget.🤷♂️
That Victor Jr. doesn’t really give up much, if any, power. It just moves the torque curve up the RPM band, and will generally make more of it too, albeit at a higher RPM. It will definitely make more on the top, especially with the better heads and bigger cam. If you doubt what I say, watch Engine Masters’ episode where they swap out the Perfomer RPM Air Gap for a Victor Jr. and pick up over 20hp and gain more peak torque (although higher in the RPM band) for a 351W build they did.
