Especially given Nash/AMC’s legacy of “bathtub” styling from 1949 onward, AMC’s cars from the mid-sixties were indeed stellar-looking.
@jsat5609
@jsat5609 10 месяцев назад
@@gmck91204 The "bathtubs" were the butt of a lot of jokes, and I've made my share of them, but they were great cars. My cousin had a 51 bathtub. It was extremely reliable and seemed to last forever. It was a two tone green which I've always thought of as a sort of iconic color for that model. Check out the '57 Nash Ambassador. It wasn't great but I think it had pretty good if distinctive styling for the time. It wasn't as over-the-top as the old bathtubs, and It had twin headlights, which was unusual for 57, and they were vertical. But, I agree; the mid '60s were IMO spot on as far as styling.

The Marlin was AMCs style leader for '65. An answer to the fastback Barracuda & 2+2 Mustang. They are still relatively low priced compared to other 'pony cars' of the era (if you can find one) My personal favorite was the 67 but I've yet to see one in person. Teague was a styling master. Able to do so much for AMC on a shoestring budget compared to the big 3. Have you considered doing some vids on prominent auto designers ? Anyhow, thanks again for the great content...👍🏁

I am a fan of just about every make and model of automobiles, including alot of sixties era and i am definitely an AMC fan, including this one. This car is as old as I am😊 I'm not sure what sure exactly of the car market mindset if that time, ! can only speculate or theorize based on information I've read or studied, but l do agree this one had a different look to it. I would almost tend to say, love it or hate it look. Personally l regard it as uniquely appealing. Based on alot of the old ads I've seen of these, with pics of the the ocean and the fish itself, they did everything could to corelate the two, I guess giving the idea of a sportsman like fun feel, which right off the bat, is a segment specific target. I do think the Charger that did mimick the design, was nice, and as far as advertising goes for that one, it definitely didn't hurt that one was featured in a popular Elvis movie of the time, although I don't recall the title. I do especially like the Rambler Classic models of that era, mainly the 2 dr, and convertible. I love the quality and design of the Marlin's interior and the folding seats are super cool IMO! I'd definitely pick one of these rare classics over any other, and i do like the sedanettes of their eras, I'd take either of those second!🤩 Awesome video, great song choice, all the cool music of that year, and the period ads, all super 😎!!

I remember seeing one of those at our local rambler dealership. I thought it was amazing but my pop thought it was ugly. So many parts were carried over from other Rambler products. Pretty much the whole front end and even the doors were from other ramblers. That was key to Ramblers cost efficiency was to share parts throughout their product line. The Pacer was one of the few cars they made that didn't share parts with other cars in their product line.

This is to the person doing these videos. The brake light serves two purposes. First is to tell you the parking brake is "on" and second to warn you that there is a problem with your service brakes IE the one you use in stop and go traffic. You did it to me again I'll take the Barracuda in the first list and the Marlin in the second list.

I like these cars. They are super easy to upgrade to disc brakes. All the AMC cars had four bolts holding the front spindles on. Just simply find a later AMC car with disc brakes, and bolt the whole thing onto your Marlin. I used to know where there was a Marlin with the 327 twin stick, but the owner was very protective of it. I only saw it a couple times!

Dad and I went to our local Rambler dealer in October, 1964, at introduction time for the '65 models. Coffee/coke & donuts were served. I think the critics were right. There is something smoother and sleeker with the Charger. But I rooted for the Marlin as a kid. Also, I see the speedometer has 10-20-30-40 etc., rather than the 1-2-3-4 of Ramblers and Nashes. Perhaps this was about the time they finally added the zeroes. Was impressed with the solidity, but not with the exhaust manifold that cracked right before I had to replace the timing chain on the 327 engine both at around 90K miles. Sleep on the fully reclined seats was not easy...AMC actually sold mattresses that fit over the seats and compensated for the different levels once the seats were reclined that made it much more comfortable. The Twin Stick electic overdrive used the Borg Warner unit. Think of it as a temporary overdrive. Its good for purposes of gasline economy. The engine would feel somewhat less gutsy when engaged. So the "burst of power " would be like shiftnig down a gear or two. The overdrive would work best at cruising speed. Volvo offered a similar Borg Warner unit in its late 1960s and 1970s cars. I had one of those. I had a 1971 station which had Volvos highest compression 2.0 liter engine. It had a decent amount of power forca small engine. Yet would rev high at freeway speeds. I installed an overdrive transmission after the 4 speed transmission died. I noticed less engine noise and fuel economy beyond 30 mpg. The AMC overdive transmission would have worked well with the V-8 engines. They would have had enough power for driving on the freeway while in overdrive. Passing would be done by disengaging the electric overdrive. The advantage would be decent enough performance while not having the engine suck ones wallet dry.
@P_RO_
@P_RO_ 10 месяцев назад
One of AMC's biggest 'misses' was their clinging on to a 3-speed with overdrive when others were offering 4-speeds. There's a lot to be said for overdrives, but it just doesn't match a 'performance' image. The "Twin Stick" looks crazy cool though; never saw one before this video!

Hi Jay!: Thanks for featuring the earlier Marlin! I really like those cars, too! I really wish AMC had marketed the car differently, more like Ford did with the Mustang. The name might have hurt sales with the younger folks, with the fishy name. I know, I know Chevy had theirs (Corvette Sting Ray) And Chrysler Corp. had theirs (Plymouth Barracuda), but I think a racier name might have been a good idea. Maybe they could have resurrected a name they already had from their Hudson merger. ITALIA! Rambler Italia! Sounds good to me! I bet that was a super car with the 327 engine in it! And I LOVE the camping aspects of the convertible interior!! A GREAT idea, that just never caught on.

Small correction: The 199, 232 and 258 six cylinder AMC engines ALL had 7 main bearings. These engines are famous for their durability and ruggedness. These same engines powered many Jeep models and remained in production for the next 17 years, long after Chrysler bought out AMC.

The 65-66 cars used to be pretty commonly seen in Kenosha up to 15yrs ago. The 67 has always been a rare car even in its birthplace. It's a shame they didny make that body style in the coming years as the 67 really capitalized on the the long fastback and IMO was a great looking car.

First, if you notice the original prototype Marlin, isn't it obvious that it was originally designed on the Rambler American? They noticed right away that the American didn't give the impression that Rambler was hoping for. That short front hood and being truncated behind the rear wheels didn't look quite right. Maybe that one was intune with Plymouth's original Barracuda, which was based on Plymouth's smallest, and economy, car. Rambler needed something more. Hence, they moved up to the Rambler Classic body. It looked a little more fitting and not just a kid dressing up in his daddy's clothes. Even with this, the Marlin was still a Rambler at heart. The base inline 6 and other standard Rambler accommodations, like a 3-speed manual transmission was nothing new but definitely not for the customer base Rambler wanted. Ofcourse the grown-up Plymouth Barracuda in it's new and final body, the "E" body, still had the base drivetrain like the Valiants. 6cyl. and 3-speed manual transmission. Now, I remember often seeing Marlins and Ramblers with the twin-stick console-mounted shifters frequently. Most often they had automatic transmissions. So, maybe this was the first American car to have an automatic transmission combined with an overdrive unit. Aftermarket companies, like Gear Vendors, started making automatic overdrive units which could bolt on to the rear of an automatic case. I remember installing one on a Chevy 1978 C2500 pick-up and it had a TH400 automatic. The customer often cruised in the desert at night going to the next motorcycle race. The lightbar on top of the cab with 6 high-output lights helped those fast nighttime drives. I don't know where all these Ramblers with twin-stick shifters went to. I haven't seen one since the 1970's. The last Marlin I encountered had a 6 cyl. with a 3-speed manual transmission in the early-2000's. The 1967 Ambassador-based Marlin is pretty cool. If equipped right, it could have been Rambler's foray into the personal luxury car. But, Rambler was more interested in the popular pony cars. The Javelin and AMX's fit into that niche nicely.

I was only 6 but paying attention and into cars already. Could ID most cars two decades back by half a front fender. I knew of the 1964 Barracuda and Mustang, of course, but don't recall even any ads promoting the Marlin. I really didn't know that AMC American Motors existed. Never came up in our house. In retrospect, the grille is nothing special, too much like the American and Classic, seen as the same thing, only a different shape. AMC was made of good stock, especially Hudson, but couldn't compete with the leaders. The sixties brought modern, creative new styles, the heavy, tank-like Fords and the light and nimble feeling Chevrolets. Chrysler was mostly just weird Exner designs down to the Plymouth line. If AMC was even on a shopper's list, they rarely made it to the last choice.

I always thought the fast back on the Rambler Classic front end was a big turn off. When the Dodge Charger came out it was Dodge's attempt to go for the Thunderbird market. it was a disappointment in sales and didn't really catch on until they went for the 'muscle car' market in 1968. I think the Charger fastback would have done better if it had been out first.

The problem with the Marlin was that it was 3+3, not 2+2. It tried to be sporty, but was designed for an older customer. If I was in my twenties back then, and the choice was between the Marlin, Charger, or the fastback Mustang, I'd take either the Charger or the Mustang, or the Barracuda, not the Marlin. They should have built the Tarpon instead, but that showcased the problem with AMC: a lack of capital to compete with the Big Three.

Let's start with the WYR. Though I think the Barracuda is a much better-looking car, I'd choose the Marlin simply because it's rarer and shows what AMC could do back then. Seems that everybody has a Mustang. For WYR 2, I've always liked that era of Caddilacs. Now onto the Marlin. It's a weird-looking car to me, especially with the front end of the 65 looking like an ordinary Rambler with the rest of it being avant-garde. The two-color paint scheme is both odd and appealing somehow; nothing quite like it offered by others till the late 60's. The 327 4-bbl was no slouch, but I think these would have been far more popular with a big-block/ 4-speed option. One of the things that made the Charger a hit was it's 413 engine. The Barracuda suffered a similar problem with it's 273 topping the line-up; missed opportunities. AMC's entries into the sporty/ performance world were never really good sellers. I think it was the public's view of AMC being too plain and ordinary overall. Those models were also short-lived and might have done better with updating and a longer model lifespan, along with some factory-backed racing which was a way to garner sales that the 'big three' took advantage of. Still, I wish I had a Marlin, just a later version.

No offense to anyone but the first 'Cudas looked like a Valiant with a giant greenhouse in back that could melt your belongings and heat up the passengers. Cudas went on to be amazing. Chargers too. At the 1:06 marker you mention the "American" series, yet you show a "Classic" ad. In 1965, the Classic series was the mid-sized offering from AMC. The American was a 'compact'. Smalller and much different looking than the Classic. The '65 & '66 Marlins were based on the Classic. In '67 the Marlin was moved to the Ambassador platform.
