"This much car for that little money?" Seven thousand dollars was a SHIT LOAD of money in 1965. You could buy a brand new V8 Mustang for 2500 bucks in 1965. This thing cost a FORTUNE. Just making rough estimates, the Cobra cost 2.8 times as much as a V8 Mustang, a new V8 Mustang costs 31k, times 2.8 is $87k. The new Viper which they compare the original Cobra to is not a far cry off at $97K. The Cobra is a legendary car to be sure, but the notion that it was a bargain is ridiculous. It was EXPENSIVE.

Oscar DeRoche And by simple inflation figures, a V8 Mustang from then cost $18,000 in today's money. Anyone with a brain can realize that cars cost relatively less back then even after inflation is calculated, and my point remains that seven thousand bucks was a ton of money for a car in 1965.

Right before he said that, he was comparing its performance to Ferraris of the time. A bargain compared to those, not compared to a Mustang.

I had an original 427 street car back when. Yes, there was plenty of zoom but hooking up was the major problem. Getting the torque to the ground with 1960's tires was a major obstacle. Heat coming through the firewall and trans tunnel was also very uncomfortable during the summer. I ran Sunoco 260 ultra high grade gas at about .33 cents a gallon.
@lmalino695

Heat -- I learned the hard way. My 65 289 I encountered a problem. My foot came out of my shoe. I was wearing desert boots which were some kind of crepe sole. The heat coming through the firewall melted the crepe or whatever were those soles.

The sound of a 427 Cobra in full stereo through my headphones is worth more than gold while I'm working overseas. Thanks for this, guys. Great commentary. Great editing in the video. You didn't bother getting too technical because we know the numbers already. This was more of a philosophical segment, if you will. Different cars in different genres with a common gene. I honestly don't think there's enough of this type of video out there.

@Kneedragon1962
@Kneedragon1962 9 лет назад
jerry henderson Actually, Lola, not Lotus, built the GT40. Lotus wanted in, they were going to shoe-horn a US V8 into a Europa. (What a beast that would have been!) But Colin Chapman and Henry Ford2 argued over who could sell it under what label and who got credit, so Ford kept looking. Lola had a 'production' car (they'd made about 6 of them) and with a bit of head scratching, you could slot a British Ford V8 in. That became the GT40 mk 1. It was the best looking and handling, but slightly down on power. So they crammed a bigger Ford V8 in. That had power, but it was heavier, which threw the handling for 6. The car you see in the pictures, mostly, which looks so good - that's a mk 1. The car that won at LeMans, several times, that was a later mk with a big bulge or two at the back. They were faster, but not as nice to drive. I did once saw a mouth watering photo. It was a Lotus Europa with a (Brit) Ford DFV engine, out of a formula 1 car. It was a test & dev mule at the Lotus factory. All work on that stopped when Chapman and Ford argued. Today we have the little Lotus Exige. Imagine one of those with the last of the Naturally Aspirated F1 V10 motors...

Have you heard the story of Chrysler and the Sunbeam Tiger? Sunbeam wanted Shelby to do something with their sports car similar to what he had done with the AC Cobra. Shelby responded by putting Ford small blocks in the Sunbeam Alpine. The result was called the Sunbeam Tiger. Things were going great until Chrysler bought Sunbeam and decided to put their small block LA engine in the car. They soon found that the LA small block was larger than the Ford small block and would not fit. Oops! They were in the embarrassing position of selling the cars at Chrysler dealerships with a Ford engine inside. When the stock of Ford small blocks ran out, the model was discontinued.

there was the Super Snake back then...only 2 made. Twin Turbo 428 Ford. 750 HP. Shelby gave one to Bill Cosby and he drove it once and sold it...it killed its next owner as he drove off a cliff. They salvaged it and rebuilt it. It was claimed to go 1.9 seconds 0-60 and do 9.50 in the quarter...faster than this new Demon crap

@@netrioter auto.howstuffworks.com/1966-shelby-cobra-427-super-snake.htm While your commentary is mostly correct, you are incorrect in that it is a twin-turboed 428. It actually is a 427 with 2 Paxton Superchargers which gave it a 0-60 time of a little over 3 seconds. Lastly, Bill Cosby returned his to Shelby after one drive... evidently it scared the hell out of the future Jello-hawking, sexual predator.

You guys are clueless. The newer cars have to meet a long line of laws to even be on the road, the Cobra was a fiberglass shell, on a fucking awful twin tube chassis (they handled like spaghetti), and a big engine. No safety regs, no emissions, no crash test etc, etc. You crash the Cobra at just 40 mph and likely you will die.

Really nice to see an original, 'narrow hip', Shelby Cobra still in it's original street trim. A lot of these ended up being converted to S/C spec with the wider fenders, pipes, quick-jack bumpers, and roll-bar. That was cool, but a street Cobra has a special look and a narrow hip is a really unique package.

See someone in the Mercedes, " hey, you see that Mercedes?" - " what? I wasn't paying attention and didn't hear anything" its a Mercedes just like the other 1000s on the rode. Where I live Mercedes, BMWs and Audi's are every where and nobody gives a crap. When you see a Viper and can hear it thundering from a mile away, that will turn your head. The gt500 looks like every other mustang on the road but its sound is booming and makes you look for where its coming from. And a Shelby Cobra, Everyone will stop to look at that because that is a major piece of history right there. This wasn't meant to offend Euro cars. They are nice but they aren't much to look at where I live. Plus I just am very supportive of my Country as you could probably tell from my name haha. So I stick with US vehicles. Ide also take a Dodge PowerWagon 4x4 truck over any of these cars except the Cobra. Get way more use out off it because when am I realistically gunna go 200mph? I'm not, but maybe some of you would. Just my 2¢ that no one cares about haha

Goober American goofs. Lots of words word words - but it's just unpleasant noise..."Carroll Shelby died this year but he knew something... the man has to control the car...." thanks for telling us what Carroll knew you insightful genius...."

God I love car and driver. When I was a kid I found several years worth of car and driver magazines on garbage day walking the streets looking for treasures with my friends. I read all of those for the love of cars. I recently moved to Ann Arbor and found out C&D is based here! I just wish I knew how to get a job with them!

I remember Cobras going for $2,500 in 1969, because they weren't worth $3,000. C63 AMG who cares it's a butt ugly car. As for Colin Comer he may have known Carroll Shelby but then again Carroll died just a couple of years ago. I worked for Carroll Shelby, I can tell you about the dozens of gun metal blue cobras lined up at a hanger at LAX in the 60's I was at a Cobra show in Pebble Beach a few years back before he, Carroll, I hadn't seen Carroll for over 30 years and he was standing right next to me and I wouldn't have recognized him, I just remember him from the 60's. Colin has a lot of book learning and knows a lot I grant you that BUT I know the weird things that aren't in the books about Carroll and the cobras.

prunga308 Judging from the way you talk about the C63 I very much doubt you ever worked for Carroll Shelby. Someone with even a limited amount of knowledge about cars would not talk that way about a Mercedes AMG C63.

I just wanted to chime in that I think this was a very well written piece. It gets the point across without over talking and some great examples. Perhaps a little short on the comparison of each car, but very well done.

Good job! Shelby was the man and it sucked to hear about his passing this year. But he made the performance car of the past, present and future! An innovator that so far has been unmatched! Gotta love the sound of the original 427 though....

In 1966 I came back from Vietnam with $8k burning a hole in my pocket. I was going to get a new car. I looked at the Cobra and the Vette, roll up windows and a heater won out as I stationed in Michigan. I would love to have either now.

lighten up - all of you wanting to hear any of these cars just search for the exhaust clips for 'em. There's hundreds for each just a few keystrokes away on this very site. Video was shot great and the narration was fine...good job C & D.

In 1966, they stopped putting the oil cooler on the street cars because people kept bumping the curbs with it and denting the little hump up. That year, they also added the center bar in the grill. In 1967, they changed the tail lights to the two stacked round lights, which this one clearly doesn't have. Therefore, I'm willing to bet this is a mid to late 1966 model. Some later 1967 cars even supposedly came with 365 HP 428 engines.

Are we not supposed to notice the change from the two ( host and other dude ) and race helmet man, during the driving shots? That and all that wind noise aside, I love this type of content. Much better than a review where the guy just reads the article from the magazine.
