1965 TR4 - rUstoration - Part 3 - Is the seized engine any good

My plan to rebuild my TR3 engine and swap it with the TR4 one didn't work as the crank was not useable anymore. In this case we have no choice but to take the seized engine from the TR4 out and try to rebuild it. Does it have the potential to be rebuilt? Let's see together

When I did a lot of work like this, I had access to a nearby shop that had chemical cleaning equipment and who could crack check the heads and blocks. This saved me a lot of time because I was able to turn to other work while the shop took care of the cleaning tasks

Elin, if it were me, I'd clean up the engine compartment and paint it the original red. I'd make it look really nice. Then, when you're finished with the rusteration and take it to a car show or event. When people look under the bonnet, they are surprised to see everything looking sharp!

I think your decision to paint the block red may seem on the surface like a small gesture, but an important one that I'm sure will be appreciated by the family of the previous owner. He certainly had big plans for this car, and some of the other's he was working on as well, so it's nice to see that you are finishing it for him. Well done Elin!!

The liner seals could be the reason water ended up in the bottom of the engine. I would get the machine shop to look at both heads before writing the original one off. Although that inlet seat looks beyond machining.

That is some good news that the crank shaft it perfect! To bad the head is so pitted but the other head is in good condition and once back from the machine shop. As for the paint go with red and give the engine the PO's name as a tribute. I beleave in karma so you do good things and good things happen!

After seeing the "milkshake" and the condition of the head, it was surprising how good condition that crankshaft is in! That's great news! I'd still have it magnafluxed... trust, but verify. Hopefully there will be more good news as you proceed to other components in the engine and throughout the car.

That poor old car was very lucky to be rescued by you guys ! 😮 Obviously some engine reworking was done, presumably after poor maintenance, but it wasn’t done properly and failed fairly soon afterwards….. maybe the head wasn’t tightened down properly ?

Another great watch with a cup of tea! As suggested I think having the engine bay all nice and shiny with fresh paint would be a great contrast to the exterior with a red block to remember the previous owner.

Well done guys you are moving forward positively. I would also clean up the engine bay and get it "mostly" red and paint the engine red with your regular silver highlights .

The crank looks great but don't forget to clean out the sludge traps. Also don't forget the clearance on the thrust is supposed to be measured without oil. Otherwise it can be as much as 0.002" too small. I would get the head pressure tested, you were going to do the exhaust seats anyway. So one more inlet seat shouldn't break the bank. 🤪

Every thing you do on a triumph engine is useful to me, I have limited space and tools and little engine experience but I will have to do my 3a engine soon so any info is good for me, by the way paint it red, even though triumph used any colour they had to hand at the time.

I suspect while the car was stood, somebody poured antifreeze into the engine by mistake. The antifreeze looked new and not what you see from a running cooling system. If that is the case, maybe you wont find anything much wrong or serious with this engine. We will see.

Congrats ... You have found a great crank shaft. If you had left it for another year you may have lost it to a rusty collection of bits. So what should be the appearance of this beast. I love to see things thar are original however this one is past looking that way. Clean out the engine bay and check the front of the chassis for rust and repair. That includes painting it. Repair the engine bay and paint it red in the shade of your choice. That even includes the inside of the bonnet/hood. In other words make the engine bay look pristine. Yep ... That includes a red engine. Whilst you have the interior stripped for repairs paint it too to help prevent rust. At some tine in the future all it will need is a professional paint job to make it more of a show car. So ... What is your preferred shade of red?????

I think your last hunch may be right! (That was brand new coolant looking unused) so maybe someone accidentally poured a bottle of coolant into the oil cap by mistake! That would be a good result I think!🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

As for the color of the block, if the previous owner cared that much about the car, I agree is should go back to red. That said, I found a brass plate in the glove box of an old car I was restoring which stated "loved by Dave", I kept it in there (only remounting with new rivots). The car should outlive me and people will always know that car used to belong to Dave - is that a possibility? After nearly 30 years since, I still I find it memorable

Soak seized cylinders with Evap-o-rust for a few days. It does a good job on rusty cylinders.

Wow, that engine is a real mystery as to the coolant, the head pitting, the bent valve, and the good condition of the crankshaft. I think the engine must have run with the coolant in the oil because of the foam, possibly many years ago and someone put the wrong fluid in the engine by accident then started the car up. I don't think oil will get like that by itself without lots of agitation Go with red for painting, make her a fun car again!

If you like leave the stem seals on the inlet and not on the exhaust.

Seems with less work you could have rebuilt your Spitfire engine and had a car to drive. This project will take several hundred hours of work and a couple thousand dollars in parts. The content is interesting but with this kind of investment it raises a lot of red flags. Especially when it is being done in the same space where you earn a living.
