Its called "Dual" (american pronounciation) because the company originally supported both hand-cranked power and electric power for the Dual-powered turntables. It's not "Doo-All", it's not a family name.

I mean if you wanna pronounce it the German way, sure. But yes in that case just pronounce it in your language.

Thanks for this video! Now I can determine the proper start up speed! I Have one of those beauties here on the workbench, cleaned and greased but still running a bit to slow. And starting very slow. The idler wheel is in great condition. Tomorrow I will take the motor apart and remove al the dirty goo in the bearings as far as I can do. Then give the bearings a bit of fresh oil. Let's see! :) It takes a bit of afford to make this machines running like new. But they are worth it. It's seldom to replace some parts on them, most of the issues are just caused by old grease and sticky oil.

It sounds like you know what you're doing! Keep in mind that during the cold months, it is normal for a 1019 to run a little slow at first. It takes a while for the motor to warm up and get up to 100% pitch, maybe 15-20 minutes from a cold start.

@@beatcomber Hey Glenn! I Let spin the platter for more than two hours and the pitch/speed was just fine. But that motor needs and deserve some new and fresh oil. I'm pretty sure that, after replacing the old sticky oil in the bearings, it will reach the right speed a lot faster. And it's better for the bearings. No more wearing caused by the lack of (fresh) oil. When I got the best record player ever working as it supposed to work, I will send you a video! And all technical explanations to get an old 1019 and others from that era let run like new.

I have heard that these turntables are not that good due to being idler drive and once that idler rubber goes hard and parts are hard to come by.
@beatcomber

Some of the most desirable turntables ever made have rubber idler wheels, ie: Thorens TD-124, Garrard 301 and 401, Lenco, etc. Fortunately there are a few places that can service the wheels, removing the dried-out rubber and putting on a fresh tire with the correct dimensions, and for not much money. Do not let that keep you from enjoying the propulsive, dynamic sound of a vintage idler-drive turntable. As far as spare parts are concerned, Dual manufactured a gazillion 1019s between 1965 and 1971, and there is no shortage of donor parts for sale on eBay, etc. The Audio Karma forum is an excellent resource for info on servicing vintage Duals and other turntables.

@@SDsailor7 Excellent! Keep in mind these old Dual record changers are fairly complex mechanical devices, so unless you're mechanically inclined, it's best to have it serviced by someone who is familiar with them. After 50+ years, the old grease dries out and gets sticky, and they typically need a complete tear-down, cleaning, and re-lubrication. If you're in the USA, there's a guy in Florida who I can absolutely recommend. The one in the video was overhauled by "Doctor Dual" in Ontario, Canada before I bought it, and the work was done very thoroughly. Feel free to drop me a line if you need more info.

@@beatcomber I have worked on reel to reel and some of them have grease that has dried out and hardened so you need to heat the pieces up or use some type of solvent to remove the hardened grease. So I would not mind tinkering on one of those old duals. But thank you for the info. Yes I am in the U.S.

Hi my 1019 after finishing the record the tone arm goes back but not going to rest, and then goes back to re start playing again. Any suggestions? Thanks.

The old lubrication has dried and gotten sticky. It will need to be disassembled, cleaned and regreased.

Is it easy to change/align carts on the 1019? Also, is it possible to quick change between carts, meaning, can you have carts aligned and already mounted on a backup headshell, and then just swap out the headshells and go to town? From what I can gather, this is not really possible on Duals. The headshell and mounting and all looks kinda complicated. But I wanted to ask and clarify just the same.
@beatcomber

Changing carts is no more complicated than with, say, an SL-1200. Very easy and quick.

That strobe disc is an original feature from Dual!
@beatcomber
@beatcomber 5 лет назад
Correct! One side is printed with a 60hz strobe (for North America) and the other side has a 50hz strobe (for Europe).
@renejansen5939

@@beatcomber Correct, I have the same disc, 33, 45 and 78 at 50Hz strobe, and when I flip it over it's a 60 Hz disc for the same record revolutions.

Hi. Help needed. Anyone know where I can find the cartridge or stylus for a dual hs31. Thanks
@beatcomber

I would think that just about any moving magnet cartridge would be compatible.

Very nice turntable!!! Got one myself but it is serviced right now. Can't wait to get it back and play my records on it! This turntable looks great and sounds even better! Do you also have the original dustcover with it?

Bro how do you know al this information about Dual, but you don't even know how to pronounce it properly? I mean it's not a big deal, but after about the 15th time It gets super annoying

Sorry, bro, I don’t speak German. Perhaps you should create a video educating us on the correct way to pronounce it?
