On "My Car Story" we're in St. Charles IL at Pheasant Run Resort on 7-26-19.
We're looking at a 1966 Yenko Stinger Corvair Chevrolet # 76 of 100 in White Paint with a Blue Stripe. The car comes with the “Stage II” air cooled 6 cylinder engine producing 190 HP.
The car's Owner is Chris Shade. Chris’s had this car since 2013. His Father Phil introduced him to the Corvair and by the time Chris was 16 years old, his 1st car was a Corvair. He now restores them, and he shares this car was not in great shape when he purchased it, however as you can see, it looks showroom new today and is ready for the race track exactly the way Don Yenko put them together.
If you’re looking for sales, service, restoration, or need fabrication on your Corvair contact Chris at Shades Classic Corner Corvairs. They are located at 1016 South Burlington Ave., Hastings, NE 68901.
Or go to the website at www.shadesclassiccars.com or call 1-402-460-7097
ENJOY!

Superb restoration. Way to go guys and thank you Lou for bringing this incredible car to your video audience. In 1968 I built an AMT model of one of these and I swore that when I got older that I would own one someday. I'm pea green with envy because it hasn't happened yet.

My uncle had a ‘61 that caught fire while he was warming it up in his garage. He rolled it into his driveway and called the fire department. It only had one fan belt and it snapped. The grass never grew between the two slabs after that so he had to get a solid driveway.
@Freedomquest08
@Freedomquest08 4 года назад
@@LlyleHunter Most Corvairs prematurely went to the wrecking yard from broken fan belts/overheating. In my opinion, if there was any flaw with Corvair's design, I think it was too many corners for GM to expect from a V belt. A lot more of these would still be on the road if they would have had a gearbox to the cooling fan instead of a V belt trying to twist it's way through that series of crazy angle pulleys.

What a awesome Corvair! My gosh I just loved that engine sound!!! It is just gorgeous! Love the colors so much! The owners were just awesome too! That is the biggest part of the cars you shoe it is the owners and their stories! I loved the sound if these cars in general but this was very healthy! The only thing is they were hard on fan belts! They always said you need a spare in your trunk just in case but of course this one is never driven. So clean underneath you could literally eat off it. Thanks Lou for showing this special car to us!!!!

Chris Shade is a leader in the Corvair community, with a dedicated Corvair repair and restoration business in Hastings Nebraska where he also buys and sells Corvairs. I want to get out there some day but, since we live just outside of Philadelphia, it's not like we can hop in the car and cruise on down on the spur of the moment! Chris and his family are Christians (as am I), and he operates the business by Christian principles. I've been a Corvair nut for well over 40 years now, but sadly, I haven't had one since 2010, and I miss it terribly.

A friend has had a number of 'vairs over the years and just picked up a '66 with automatic. I finally got a chance to drive one, something I've been wanting to do for years. it was a surprisingly nice driving car, really nice, good torque and no bad habits or tricks (at least because I wasn't going to push someone else' car!). Since he's been in the corvair club for many years, when I'm ready to find one he'll be there to help as he knows quite a lot more about them then I do. I have my eye on a '65 or later Corsa hardtop with 4 speed. he says the 3 and dual carb engine are actually better, but I still want the 4 carb..

VN 64 to 66, saved my money. Couldn't decide, hemi charger or Corvair. Bought the Vair 66 turbo, white convertible. After a while I took it to Yenko to have it made into a stinger. No dice, wrong engine. They did some modifications for me, cost me a lot of army paychecks. The upgrade was awesome. Owned it for about 2 years. An amazing amount of GM engineering and resources went into the design of the Corvair, much of it discounted because of a single flaw that was later corrected. They were better engineered than the Porches of that time, and far more durable. I grew up with these cars, knew many people who owned them and had good luck with them. Some were owned by racing enthusiasts who put many thousands of safe miles on them. Others were owned by women that had ice cold factory air conditioning and Powerglide automatics. Had they been allowed to evolve like the Porsche, it may have displaced the Corvette. Most of the ones I was familiar with went to the junk yard because they high miles and were worn out.

Beautiful! But they sound like brutes if you add tube exhaust with genuine turbo mufflers. Had a '63 Monza with later 140 engine set up that way and the thing would move VAST amounts of air and absolutely roar! I'll bet this baby would sing a really nice song.

@@loucostabile I've had 3 (the Monza, '65 Turbo Corsa, and '63 panel van, all with 4-speeds, of course), and think about getting another one just about every day. If you know how to drive one they're a terrific ride and have capacity to still be quite formidable if it's had a good amount of work done to it. I was a frequent shopper at Eico in Santa Monica. That does it; I'm going to get one!

When I was a little kid, my parents had a Corvair. We were hit by a drunk driver from the rear going 60 miles an hour, and the police said the rear engine saved Our Lives. Ralph Nader put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I absolutely loved the Corvair. It was one of Chevys best car, and anyone who's ever driven one knows what a liar Ralph Nader was with his stupid book, "Unsafe at any speed." The guy lost his heart because his daughter, who unfortunately had no clue how to drive, was killed in one in an accident! Why Chevrolet stopped producing such an awesome car without even trying to upgrade the vehicles safety components, simply because they lost a suit to a grieving, emotionally bankrupt consumer advocate who thought he stood a chance at becoming president of the US, when he'd have had an easier time becoming president of any foreign auto manufacturer in the US, behooves me! Now that Ralph Nader is dead, and retro is in for auto styling, I think Chevrolet should seriously consider bringing their rear engine Corvair back with all the modern safety equipment, and a modernized, more efficient, "pancake " motor, that was so far ahead of its time during the 1960s! HeLl , they brought back a retro styled Camaro, with a 6.2 ltr motor, and it's been selling spectacularly! Now that the idiot in the white house decided to destroy American energy independence, and basically insist that we go back to when his idiot friend Jimmy Carter caused the ridiculous 70s gas shortage, demanding that America stop being an exporter of fuel, causing oil products to cost AMERICANS what the Europeans pay OPEC for THEIR oil, when WE could sell it to them for LESS, STILL PROFIT, AND KEEP AMERICANS PAYING LESS THAN HALF WHAT WE'RE PAYING WITH A COMMUNIST BUFFOON IN OUR WHITE HOUSE, trying to insist that we the people save our money to pay utterly ridiculous 100k for teslas and the big 3s alternative electric cars, that AMERICANS DO NOT WANT, AND SHOULD NOT BE FORCED TO DRIVE! THE PEOPLE OF THESE UNITED STATES LOVE THEIR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES, - AND WE ARE FREE, NOT NEEDING SCOLDING FROM SOME ARROGANT, INCOMPETENT, EGOTISTICAL, BRAIN DEAD FOOL WHO HAD THE MEDIA PUSH HIM INTO HIS ROLE AS ACTING PRESIDENT, WITH THEIR FAVORITE MARXIST, ANTI-AMERICAN , WORST , MOST ILLEGITIMATE PRESIDENT EVER TO OCCUPY OUR WHITE HOUSE PULLING HIS DODDERING STRINGS, KILLING MILLIONS OF GOOD PAYING AMERICAN JOBS, DESTROYING ENTIRE INDUSTRIES WITH HIS UNPLAYABLE BLOATED MINIMUM WAGE, AND PAYING PEOPLE THAT DON'T WANT TO WORK PAY EQUAL TO THAT OF THOSE WHO ACTUALLY SHOW UP FOR THEIR JOBS! IT'S SICK! OBAMA GAVE GOVERNMENT MOTORS A BAILOUT BECAUSE THEY MISMANAGED THEIR OWN PENSION FUND, AND DRASTICALLY OVERPAID THEIR CEOS WHEN THEIR QUALITY WAS IN THE SHITTER! NOW, OBAMA SHOULD ORDER HIS FRAUD OF A CAR COMPANY TO BRING BACK THE LITTLE CAR THAT WAS GREAT, BECAUSE ITS LYING NEMESIS IS DEAD AND BURIED!

@@loucostabile Thank you, Lou. I am subscribed. Also, thanks for tolerating my aggressive, opinionated, and fairly politically driven diatribe on the Corvair/GM/ Ralph Nader issue! I've always believed that Naders grief stricken attacks on general motors and the Corvair did nothing but deprive the American auto market of a really great, truly American, car! No one can deny Mr Nader his right to speak out about what he believed to have stolen his beloved daughter from him, but I don't agree with his book, or the conclusions within it that were unsubstantiated and unprovable propaganda, which, general motors should have used to defend their great little, gas efficient, rear engine car! Instead both Nader, AND GM, got all political with it, Nader because of his personal consumer advocacy, and GM because their unnecessary since the 1940s, UNIONIST political agenda. They were politically in the same mindset, which doomed a future for the sweet little AMERICAN car! Whenever I see a Corvair rusting away in a backyard or garage, or salvage yard, I wish I had the money to restore it, and see what an engineer would do with it today?
