On "My Car Story" we're in Iola WI on 7-6-23.
We're looking at a 1966 Mercury Comet Cyclone Convertible in Red Paint. The car is equipped with a 390 CI V8 engine, with an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Don Steinman. Don’s had this car since 1984. Don shares he restored the car himself for many years. He said since there are so few of them, people will think it’s a Rambler Ambassador because the headlights are stacked. The car also has a fiberglass hood.
If you’d like to come to the Iola Car Show here is the link - www.iolaoldcarshow.com
ENJOY!

That is sweet. I'm looking for a 70 Cyclone Spoiler. I'm curious when you park a car on the road at an angle, how do you know a car won't come screeching down the road and plow into it?

The Comet was originally aimed at being a mid-sized , "economy car"...but when the early muscle car concept took hold, Mercury dumped larger V8 engines in those vehicles...And being a lighter body style, those mid-60s Comets really were good competition for later GTOs, etc. I wish we could have heard just what the bhp was in this car, I am guessing around 320 or so...I think the owner mentioned that there was another optional engine that had even more hp. Being of economy heritage, these cars were usually driven hard, and then taken to the junkyard when they were trashed. So this example is truly a rare model!

What a great Comet! Perfect for cruising, or just eyeballing and smiling. I don't think I've ever seen a convertible one before, so Mr. Steinman's sets the bar pretty high for the next one. Thanks, Lou!

Actually 1966 was the first year of the engines being painted blue. As a kid I can still remember the ad. “You’ve heard of green giants, white tornadoes, how about blue horses?” My parents bought their first new car in 1966 and the choice was down to a Mercury Comet Capri 2 door hardtop or a Ford Fairlane 500 4 door sedan. The Fairlane won out because the Mercury Comet was over $3,000. Doesn’t that sound odd today? Option packages cost $3,000 today. I still have the window sticker from the Fairlane, $2,843.44.

The blue was called ‘Ford Corporate Blue’. It matched the color of the Ford oval logo. I’m sure that color lasted through the 70’s. After that, the engines were painted grey? Today, you can’t even see the engine color. 🤔

Hey Lou, what a great car that is! It looks exactly like the Indy 500 pace car. And the Comet really transformed itself in '66, going from a stretched Falcon to a twin to the newly restyled Ford Fairlane. That Cyclone can really fly! Those Comets are hard to find today. And the namewas one of Mercury's longest running names, starting as a stretched compact in 1960, then a mid-size from '66 to '69. After skipping '70, the name came back, this time as a twin to the Ford Maverick until it was discontinued after '77 to make way for the Zephyr. Thanks again, Lou! _(10/4/2023)_

Wow! A 66 Comet my dad traded, in his 63 Galaxie in on a 66 Comet in June 1966. It may seem like a step down to go from a Galaxie to a Comet size wise, but then again, he went from a Ford to a Mercury that was a step up. Maybe really it was a sideways step. Don did a remarkable restoration, but I did notice one small detail wrong. The windshield washer pouch is from previous years. In 66 the Mercury's had a hard plastic reservoir that had the Mecury Roman god logo molded on the top. The reservoir was rectangular in shape on all sides. My guess is that dimensionally, it was approximately 4 by 6 by 8 inches. The owner said that it was the last year they made the engine blue. That was wrong. As I recall, my dad's 63 Galaxie's V8 engine was blue and my 63 Falcon's 6 Cylinder was red. The 6 Cylinder in my dad's 66 Comet was blue, and every Ford and Mercury engine up through the eighties that my dad and I owned was blue. It might have been the first year that all the Ford engines were blue, and they were transitioning from red in the sixties prior to 1966.

For better or worse, Ford dropped the ball calamitously with the Cyclone and Fairlane when facing the GTO/442 crowd, much less the MoPar gang.. They were considered loser cars, kind of like Karmann-Ghias or 190SL Mercedes; poser cars. The Cyclones and Fairlanes were nice enough cars, but coming during Ford's Total Performance era, they were no such thing. Should have been. Weren't.

What a beautiful beautiful car...and wearing the PERFECT color! The 1966 Fairlane was a stunning car, but Mercury's Comet was slightly understated and that gave it a styling advantage. That big block 390 was not the most powerful engine of its size, but it WAS virtually indestructible and could take more than its share of abuse! Living in Ford's shadow forever, Mercury's styling was often either bland or weird...that is most certainly NOT the case here! It's a shame these beautiful cars are so rare... but you managed to find a magnificent example, and a convertible to boot!!! Another great post, Lou...thanks!
