Great Video. I have a '69 Royal Star in the garage. Big difference seems to be chrome fenders and tach.

Looks like my Old Royal Star. I bought it new at Clifford Motors in Canton Conn. it was $ 1,200.00 . I sold it when I got out of the service and needed a vehicle for the winter, I wish I still had it! But I still have my BSA Firebird and Triumph T120R . I love the 650's but just for a fun smooth ride the Royal Star was the Best. I think this one is missing the rear grab bar but it's still a beauty!

I'm British, of all the bikes I rode, this was my favourite,,,,,,,Royal Star 1970........took self and girlfriend from Cambruidge, toured North Wales, up to Scottish borders, down South to Portsmouith.....not many places we didnt get to in UK. Rugged, rekliable, hansome, comfortable. Ok maybe a tad short of speed for a 500, but fast enough for me, big enough to go anywhere in the country, around 50-55 miles per gallon, cruising with 2 up at 60mph, so big enough to do anything yet small enough to be economical with fuel. I'm an old man now, in my 80's, but if I could live again, give me my beloved "Joe" (OJE941J) and I'd be a happy man!. Lovely video of my favourite bike. I later rode a Norton 750 Commando, and a BSA Ligtening 650cc A65L......neither won my heart like the old Royal Star did!

The poor old 500, always overshadowed by the BSA 650s. My dad had the 500 lo these many years ago, painted it a sort of purple with silver pinstriping. It looked great. Too bad I was far too young to ride it.

The " poor old 500" was way easier to ride, start and keep in tune and hardly any vibration, it was only fractionally slower than the 650 having just 4bhp less. In many ways it was the thinking man's 650 because you had the exact same looks but less of the 650 hassle.

I had one from new, from Victor Devins. Great Western Road Glasgow, had it pinched by a creep from Rigside, saw it parked on Lanark main street, months later, regret I did not phone Police, Insurance Company had settled up by then, how low can people get.

Firstly, I'm a big fan and own one and live 6 miles away from the BSA factory, I love it, I need to get this out of the way. People get carried away about British bikes compared to say 20 years ago and have got caught up in the investment trap. These bikes believe it or not up until as recently as 15 or so years ago were looked down upon. You have the USA spec tank and western bars that make it look sporty. These bikes back in the day were your bread and butter commuter hack or side car puller, anything less than 650cc were just your average mode of transport, I have a magazine from the 90s that had a buying guide section and spotlight Ed one of these. It said they were not much sort after, were fairly basic, not exciting, handled like a pig, wasn't worth any money, unless it's in mint condition don't buy it, don't spend too much money on it because you will never get it back, buy the best you can because they are two a penny etc etc, in other words about as exciting as a Honda super dream. Fast forward basically 20 years and they are rare, exciting, cool, sought after, handsome, expensive, desirable head turner's worth about ten times what people DIDN'T want to pay for them 20 years ago. Why is that? I think it's because back in the late 90s it was 30 years old now now its over 55 years old so it's vintage, retro, cool again. In this plastic false lost world its become fashionable again.. When I go out on mine I got waved at all of the time, honked at, people come over for a chat whenever I park up. I'm so glad the bike I own isn't the sad everyday runaround that magazine stated it was, it is a superb living piece of machinery that is so desirable that it has nearly doubled in price (that does not bother me, never has done, don't care if it stayed the same) and creates happiness wherever it goes and thanks to you guys keeping these bikes in circulation they live on in a better time and place.

I've got one too, paid £350 for it in 1982 with tax & mot. Haven't used it since 2001 but will get it back on the road soon.
