It was a fun day shooting with our friend Ethan's Uncle Chris. Chris is an old school car guy and has owned some cool ones including this 1967 Nova L79 327/350 hp car. He'll get into the details of what it was and what it has been since he purchased it almost 20 years ago.
Sit back and enjoy the ride...

Had a '66 L79 4 speed back in the mid 70's. Absolutely stock it pulled 309 @ 5200 at the wheels when dyno'd at Nobu's Auto Lab in Hollywoood California. Note also the ENGLE cam stickers. Knew Jack, Mark, and Doug Engle very well as I later started a BMW, MBZ, Porsche performance facility right next door at 1629 12th St in Santa Monica. Thanks for the blast from the past.

How cool! Grew up in the valley, 70s...we had Bob Jennings dyno shop off Sepulveda. THat guy can tune like nobodys biz...Used to be cars lined up down the st ea morning to have him put thier car in that old Clayton dyno. He curved my last dists right before he closed up shop, poor guys getting old, no busniess (everything is ls now) sad to see. Lots of st racing went on 4 nights a week up there through the late 80s.

The Late Steve Tate, and his family owned Gallatin Mo. Co. In Gallatin Mo. and raced this same car for years from the factory to the strip. I never new how rare it was till I grew up. Sadly I heard it was sold sometime after the late 80s and cant/hasnt been located . Bethany Mo. Drag strip had a lot of fine cars and bikes back then racing and still does today. We need more affordable drag racing for the youth today help the USA get back to the hands on proud manufacturing Nation we once were.

I have a friend back in Pennsylvania that has a 66 or 67 (can't remember which) Nova. Nothing fancy but still running on its original motor and drivetrain. As a matter of fact everything is still original. But what alot of fun to drive. So this Chevy II is awesome imho. Great paint and interior. And just like its owner it ain't gonna go fast so it'll be around for a little while longer. lol Great episode man. I dig it.

In 1966 the L79 was rated at 350 hp and it came with a Holley carb and an aluminum intake manifold and they built around 6000 of them. In 1967 they switched to a cast iron manifold and a Quadrajet carb and only built 6 of them in Chevy ll's and rated them at 325 hp. This car has the 325 hp sticker on the air cleaner and it looks like a cast iron intake. Common belief is that the Camaro was coming out in '67 and they didn't want the performance of the Chevy ll to outdo the Camaro.

Beleivable....Have a 67 El, few L79s found thier way in those too. Never found out if mine was a 275hp 327 or the L79. Probably the former as it came with a T350 3.08 non posi. Love this car I wouldnt change one thing ! Owner is fun to listen to I bet those brakes are setup perfectly. Bet he did his share of st racing way back when.

If I had this car purely to race, of course I would put headers & 4:10 gears or even lower. And believe it or not, although the drum brakes are sketchy after a bit of use, they are something like 11 lbs PER WHEEL lighter than disc brakes. 44 lbs less weight is quite a bit, especially for un-sprung weight in the wheels. BETTER for drag racing, because you're only braking once, and then there's plenty of time between runs/passes to cool off. I would only want discs up front if it was my daily driver.
@gordocarbo
@gordocarbo Месяц назад
True that was the st race setup. Manual drums being lighter or possibly manual disc. Ive had manual drum cars that stopped great just make it like new adjust them right. Only if you drove through a flooded intersection were they sketchy...just had to dry them off before the next light. Id change nothing on this car as tempting as it would be .

I read on Stevesnovasite.com that back in 1966, There wasn't a huge demand for the L79 Novas, even though a real 350 HP 327 in a light weight Chevy II chassis, gave the L79 Novas more performance from the factory than other GM platforms.

The car was fast as hell but it would not stop at the top end. The 4 wheel drum brakes were a joke. The main reason I sold the car it would not stop. There are no front suspension upgrades even though the front ends on these cars are notoriously bad! He has the stock exhaust manifolds and intake where as most people would install headers and an aftermarket intake manifold. While some of these upgrades might make the car more enjoyable to drive, There are plenty of modified Novas already out there!

Thought that one was the Chevy 2. The Nova trim package had more of a sweeping rear roof line. And didnt have the post style that made it so boxy. In a way the 1967 Chevy 2 Nova trim package. The cab/roofline was more similar to the Chevelle of the same year.

In 67 that was the "gross" horsepower rating. "Net" horsepower is quite a bit less. It really depended on the manufacturer and the engine, but probably subtract about 50 to 100hp from the gross to get the net. Net HP for this engine was probably around 275. In 71, GM gave gross and net ratings for their engines, so you can look at those and get an idea of how much lower the net ratings were. And the net ratings were more realistic as they (should have) included all the accessories and full exhaust...
@bobbrinkerhoff3592
@bobbrinkerhoff3592 Год назад
Sorry , but you can't compare the engines from '71 to the earlier engines , as they had already started to drop the compression ratios . The L79 had 11.0 to 1 stock . By '71 they were down to 9.0 to 1 . That makes a big difference in itself .
@westernapache1700
@westernapache1700 Год назад
@@bobbrinkerhoff3592 Sorry, but I wasn't comparing the 67 and 71 engine output at all. My example is only to show the big difference between gross and net HP numbers - using the differences between the 71 engine's gross and net numbers - as GM provided both that year. Gross numbers were mostly unrealistically high.
@bobbrinkerhoff3592
@bobbrinkerhoff3592 Год назад

@@bobbrinkerhoff3592 Yes, I know. I am not comparing the 67 to 71 engines. I am only using the example of the difference between the gross rating of the engine and the net rating of the engine. I'm only talking about the difference between how manufacturers rated gross and net. The gross numbers for any engine from any manufacturer were not useful - as the gross engine output was often measured when the engine had no accessory drives, no air cleaner, open exhaust, etc. - so the customer would never experience that output in the new car they just bought unless they modified it. The gross rating sounded good, but was not realistic. For the net rating, everything was attached to he engine just like it would have been in the vehicle. The net rating was more realistic, and something the vehicle owner would actually experience as received from the dealer. So the 67 in this video didn't really have 350hp as found in the vehicle as received from the dealer - because 350hp was the gross rating. The actual rating would have been around 275hp net.

@@westernapache1700 are you aware of the fact that the manufacturers had a habit of underreporting the horsepower and torque numbers in order to gain an unfair advantage in organized competition and to keep the insurance companies off of their backs . For example; in 1966 you could buy a SS 396 Chevelle with a engine rated as high as 375 hp. Yet in 1965 the very same engine was rated at 425 hp. and the NHRA caught on to this and adjusted the rating for that engine in competition , along with many others .
