That 68SS, Thank God they killed the music when that beast fired up. Music to my ears. One of the best looking 68's I've ever seen. I wouldn't change a thing.

Nick's garage is not just another shop building cars, every car that Nick works on always has a story behind it, and now that Nick shop puts there hands on it another story begins when the owners mention that the cars was worked on by Nick..........very fortunate to be part on his entourage......your passion and you are genuine.....great shop.

It is really encouraging to see such a young fellow owning and appreciating something from the first muscle-car era. I sometimes feel that soon, even in my own lifetime, the only place we'll be able to see "our kind of cars" is in museums. Hope not, but the place I live is a great example. There used to be more street-rods, hot-rods, muscle-cars & etcetera around here than anyplace else I ever lived. Now, you see them at the dragstrip, or posed in some parking lot with the owner in a lawn chair, and that's about it. So, thumbs up to the youngblood with the '68, even a bowtie '68. Chevy or not, that is one sweet ride.

Nick, I'm a Mopar guy but I just pulled an 454 engine from scrap yard. $270! All original turns over freely. I always liked the big chevy engines too. Going to do a fresh overhaul rebuild. 268XE. PRW stainless roller rockers. Bowl blend. Matching valve springs kit. RPM air gap. New oil pump etc. Should be nice fun street motor. Stock restored exhaust manifolds. Glass packs. 😊

I can't believe it - l'm the same way...l always look over my shoulder & leave the mirrors & seat alone in somebody else's car/truck...68 & 69 launched (weight transfer) better than any of the other Chevelles...68 was the first year for the 'suitcase' shifter handle...before that they had 'T' handles - they had a rod instead of a cable (my preference)...the SS 396 was 'the car' back when l was in highschool (graduated 1972)...they were made better (less squeaks, rattles & whistles) than the Mopars, but everytime you got in one - it needed gas...the wedge Mopars were a little better in that department & could out corner (handle) anything out there in a turn as well as just inch by the GM's & Ford's through the traps if the driver knew their car...l didn't mind that the lug nuts were backwards on 1 side of the car, but those spark plugs were a Real Pain! So there you have it: 1 needs gas everytime you get in it & the other 1 you have to drive with busted, skint knuckles/fingers/hands...1 other thing on the 68 & 69 hardtop Chevelles - the door glass liked to come of track...the 300 Chevelle was a 'post' (B pillar) car - it didn't have that problem...it may have been a little heavier, but it was stronger

BRAKES! Most hot rodders build big engines. Some design mind blowing paint schemes. A car that can "run" needs one more thing.... I needs to stop faster than it gets you into trouble. Brakes. Back in the day, (Mid 1960s till the end of the 1970s) Brakes were an afterthought. My Charger, my Dads Imperials and especially my wife's T bird all had one weak spot: rear (and front) drum brakes that would lock up in a panic stop. It was even more pronounced once the engine was replaced with anything that made more power than stock. (Try and stop a 550 hp, 5800lb car at speed and you'll know what I mean.) Rear brakes that lock up are inefficient. Any slight steering wheel movement, and deviation in the road surface any less than ideal slipping and you can get in trouble in an instant. Today, parts companies make rear disc brake conversion kits. Even after mark anti lock brakes are a option. All hot rod and muscle cars can benefit from 4 wheel disc brakes. Not so back in the day. I pushed my my Charger past all sane levels of power back then. In a turn I had to tap the brakes when another driver lost it and slid over the median into on coming traffic. (Not pretty) I had to lean on the brakes very hard. I felt the rears lock up. As the car started to slid to the left, I steered into it, it then slid to the right, again I whent with it. 3 times it slid left then right, untill I slowed down and was by some miracle I was heading in the right direction and ahead of the traffic behind me. Those rear drums had to go! I tip toed home, my beautiful wife took one look at me and said- "What did you do now" I guess I was still bit shaky because she sat me down, took my jacket and gave me a glass of water... "Why is your jacket and shirt all sweated up" I told her the story. The look of dismay was plain on her face... The look in her eye was of a certain T bird that locked all 4 wheels and scared her... That's it! Something has to be done about this. The next day, I whent to Pete's shop and asked for a lift so I could start working out what needed to be done. (No, I didn't even work there anymore, that was the trust that we had) With a wheel off, and the drum pulled off, I was measuring things. Pete walked over and asked what was wrong with it? I told him the story. He looked across the shop at his prized 70' GTO Judge, thought about it for a minute. "I did the same thing, ok, I'm with you, we got some 1/4 inch steel plate back there, start measuring and drawing. I'll start looking for parts that will fit." With a drill press and band saw and a hand grinder, it took us two days to make 2 conversion kits, one for the Dana60, one for the GM 12 bolt. New brake lines and a proportioning valves were fitted. Now it was time to proof them. You don't want to test new brake systems on the street. Pete had a buddy at JFK airport, he let us use a side strip to run up and down on. Pete insisted on going first. He started out slow, at legal street speed... The new discs all most instantly locked up. Ok, that's not good. He creapt back, and said loosen up the prop valve 3 turns. The rears locked up just a split second after the fronts. "One more turn" He whent to the other end of the strip. The 455 bit In, the Judge digging in. He stood on the brakes.... Perfect. He said it was stopping under distance compared to drums. Do the same thing to yours. Excellent, I pumped the brakes- (Early anti lock) It stopped way easier than with just the drums. My wife's car was next, then my Dad's. Pete made it a new modification that his shop would install. He sold alot of them. It was 1979. 40+ years ago. Petes arm around my shoulder and said- "Your a f@#k genius" It was worth every life it ever saved. Nick- Remind the customers about the brakes. (Especially that orange Charger) The way of the muscle car will never die. Tommy.

Way back when I was in high school auto shop one of the kids in the senior class wanted a 55 Chevy like was in Two Lane Blacktop when it came out. This kid's father was well to do so he financed the project that was built in auto shop. Visually it was the same grey primered body, glass tilt front end, 454 with full race mechanical cam & four speed. Fully caged. The problem was the kid was scared of it and would,t push it so it would load up and run bad. Our shop teacher took him out for a ride one saturday and showed him how to drive it to keep it running right. After that the kid sold it and went back to his 1967 camaro with a two speed powerglide and two barrel 327.

I find that you're right. lol I daily drove my 74 Charger for a while and trying to get good gas mileage I rarely got in it just slowly cruise and baby it. It did get good gas mileage for a while but then it started running kind of bad. Checked everything and couldn't figure out why. A friend of mine and I went to the gas station one night he told me to put some octane booster in it as well as some 105 octane from the pump and take it on the express way. Did that and drove it hard blowing out the carbon and stuff and she cleared up and drove better.

I did my best to drive the living crap out of them back in the day. Picture a blizzard snow storm and your daily driver is a 70 GTX 440 6pak 4spd super trac pak. 70mph side ways on residential streets surfing that big block tq....

had a 71 Chevelle 350Lt1 m21... Used to street race in 1980 in NYC area Queens ....mis those days. I put trans back together as a 16yo kid... Cars back then didn't handle well in turns. Flipped mine on off ramp after race... Cuda beat me also..lol

Nick, you are the best. 1968 Chevelle SS is a beautiful car and the engine sounds great, I would prefer a 4 speed though.

Just love this. Chevrolets' I had a few, and a nice ride those were. Now only Chrysler. This Chevelle is beautiful. And this Belair, looks like just from a movie Deuce Coupe, Black Magic. Great stuff Nick again.

Well Mr. Nick, if you absolutely, positively have to work on Saturday, you should be able to have a little fun. Just tell them that it's in the policy manual under "other duties as required, but not specifically listed" It makes sense to me. Both the Chevelle and the 55 are just so sweet. The Chevelle just has original written all over it, which makes me appreciate it much more. Mild modifications, great looking wheels and that throaty rumble that a 396 is all about. The 55 is something else, the 454 under the hood is the last thing the guy sitting next to you at the traffic light would expect as all he sees next are those little tail lights. The interior looks more like a sedan with the split bench seat. The gate shifter with the t-handle looks awkward with a bench seat, so what? I didn't notice but please tell me there's a bare foot gas pedal to go with that small diameter steering wheel. That car is older than you and I both Mr Nick. Judging by it's looks, it's been better taken care of than you and I both too! LOL!

Some cars just should Mr Nick. The Tri-fives for sure. Between the 32 fords with Flat Heads and the Muscle Cars of the 60's and 70's, the Tri-Fives took center stage. I have 2 questions Mr. Nick. Are you only wanting the flags of the countries where your members live? How about the state flags from the US? I think that a Florida state flag would look good hanging on your wall. There is something different looking about the 55 in this video. Did Chevy make a different body style for sale in Canada? I may be mistaken but the body lines look different.

The 454 55 Chevy needs a custom advance curve and a better tune. Lazy response imho it could be much improved. Help him out Nick! 👍

Me too.just seems real flat off idle.Maybe she needs to be dropped in first or too tall a gear but It’s hard to tell on a video sometimes.Nick is the man and his word is gold so if it’s good,it’s good.

Clamdiggerdan Boone. What I did was advanced the timing so that it will not bog on full acceleration. And yes, it is lazy on full throttle. it needs more torque from gear ratio or a higher stall converter.

HeadFlowinc. It needs more then a tune. We fixed the bogging problem with advancing the timing. Need to build more torque on this car.

Why is that 454 in that 55 Chevy so gutless? Goes as good as my old 318 1979 Cordoba.

It's in the way he was driving it, punching the throttle at low rpm makes it more likely to backfire, which is what he was test driving for. If he were trying to win a drag race, it would have been a whole lot different.

Great work, nice 68, love all the Chevelles, 70'ss is my fav. You're right, was thinking about getting a 392 hemi challenger, but visibility stinks. I'm a Chevy man all day anyway. I just love the cowl induction and the shakers. 😁
