The then mayor of San Fran encouraged All sorts of film folks to use the city as a back drop for their TV spots. The movie Bullet was made in San Fran at this time also.
That Caprice is such a beautiful comfortable car. Had a '69 Caprice (Kingswood Estate ) wagon with the 396. Learned to drive in it. That car was an absolute cream puff! As an added bonus, that car MOVED! Don't tell my folks tho lol! Thanks for sharing this video!
I was 14 when this car came out but I remember it well. One of my friends' parents had it. Smooth, comfy, roomy, and even a good sound system. My sister had a 68 Camaro. Astro Ventilation always cracked me up. It sounded so space age, but it was in most aspects just another vent. Nothing like hot air on a hot day.
AND she has a waistline. You don’t see that much anymore. I had a 68 Caprice in Ash Gold. The inside upholstery was spectacular. Reminded me of a fancy coffin. I hate to make that analogy. I didn’t have the hide away headlights but it did have fender skirts. 327. A real nice car. I miss those days.
Thanks for uploading. Love the high quality. Pure Mad Men chic! Commercials may be idealized and project a distorted, unrealistic representation of life in the interest of inducing desire to buy, but this clip just epitomizes what was (and is) so wonderful about "modern life". Great setting, gorgeous car, equally gorgeous lady, slick, very professional photography, the fashions, the voice-over, music, editing...everything is just right. Light, cool, elegant, fresh, modern. An ode to bright, breezy, happy living..hard to believe this was made 50 years ago. That's half a century. To me, this seems fresher and more youthful than most of anything today. We may have grown estranged from the aesthetics and the charm of mid-century commercial culture, our sentiments tainted by the disappointments and cynicism of the decades since, but this stuff just never gets old. Because it just doesn't get better than this. There simply is no app for cool.
Yesssss. I apreciated (noticed) the same as you did. Today life is empty, all that chic things in commercial we do not see it in 2020. They knew how to be ellegance, niddle class people today don"t, just few men and women keep a rwlative glam way of life style. 1968 was an era where you find glamour in any corner. Xrist Stgo CL
Because it was shot on film instead of video. That's also why TV shows from that era still look good, while some shot on video in the mid 70's look terrible.
@@my3dviews I know I work in media. sadly so much has been lost, either locked on vaults or much has been thrown out. I have some local film commercials from the 70s I want to get converted.
@@macdaddybill Also, some TV shows were just recorded over after they aired to save video tape. At least with film, there wasn't the temptation to re-use it.
My parents bought a new 1968 Caprice 4 door from Kline Chevrolet in Virginia Beach. Had it ten years. I sold it for them and I wish I had it now..that thing floated down the highway...
Dash Riprock I remember seeing that on an LTD in the 70s as a kid while we were at a traffic light! We had a 72 Caprice, but when I saw the lights flip on that LTD! All I could say was “ Man that’s sweet! Hey daddy did you see that?!”🚗👌🏾
Interesting that no other GM full-size car had them. Corvettes, GTO's and the big coupes like the Eldorado, Toronado and Riviera, but none of the regular big cars from the other divisions. And in '68 at least, Ford offered them only on the LTD. The following year, however, LTD, Marquis and Continental all had hidden headlights. On Mopars, just the Dodge Charger and the Chrysler 300 in '68.
I sort of feel sorry for the younger guys today. Sure young girls open up their legs a lot quicker, but no telling what harmful microbes are up in there. Yuck.
Had a 68 caprice I bought off my buddy in 71. Traded it in for a 74 charger got 600 bucks for it. Only had about 80 miles. Wish I still had it and my charger.
While she was lucky to have such a beautiful car general motors had a lot of good cars back then in the 1960s and they had 50% of the American market share
I kept waiting for a Highland Park Green Mustang, and a black Charger, to come barreling through that scene.

I have walked those streets of the "City" San Francisco all my life. I live in North Los Ángeles these days but going this Memorial Day Weekend to the "City." Great clip!
@@raymondrose6596 That is not funny at all. When I drove a 1973 Cadillac Coupe dé Ville - triple white - two women came into the reception and asked if they could take pictures of themselves with the car. I said "OK". A few minutes later my managers wife came in and told me that there was a women on the hood of my car!!! Not in my wildest imagination had I foreseen that they would jump up on the hood of my car. What is wrong with women?
When you look at what a full size luxury car is there you go, and with the hidden headlights it really looks good!! I have an old Motor Trend magazine with the Caprice, LTD, &VIP alongside the Cadillac, Imperial & Lincoln so a loaded Caprice is over $5k, but I recently ordered online a ‘68 Impala/Caprice hardtop resin body that I want to build to slightly resemble Larry Tate’s car from Bewitched but with the hidden headlights instead of the regular grille so it’ll be spectacular when completed
You could always tell which season an episode was from by the year of the Chevys shown in it. Chevrolet was a major sponsor of the show for the first five seasons.
We had a '67 C-10 pick-up,327,auto trans, no power anything, no radio, but bucket seats with center console between the seats. We also had a '68 Bel Air,305,AM radio, no power anything.Try parallel park those beasts, you know you had your hands full! But I still miss them.
I Know You would always have your parents who would buy that type of car and got nothing extra on the car and it killed the whole fashion of the car because it looked so plain. It was to the point where you wanted to say why should we even get a new car if your gonna buy the base model.
I’ve got a 70 custom 10 in my backyard right now. Probably spent more of my childhood in the truck than I did in my backyard actually. In its heyday that truck was beastly. Being a custom 10 it has a lot of options like a headliner and radio along with a lot of trim. I bought a 66 impala when I was 19 for $650. I technically wreaked it within a week lol. Fortunately the car wasn’t hurt just my pride. I’m currently 23 to give you some context on how long ago this was. Impala has no brakes to this day and hasn’t moved much since I bought it. I’m actually trying to figure out how to go about taking it to a bodyshop now for sandblasting and paint
Had a 68 Caprice stupid me traded it in for a 74 Charger for 600. buck. Then sold the Charger later for 2600. to get a 76 Blazer. Wished I would have kept them all.
Nice car , but face it a girl her age in 68" wouldn't have given two hoots about a Caprice. It was considered an old person's car. Now a Camaro or a Firebird maybe.....
When women they were pretty and slender in USA now they are chunky and full of tattoos I do remember when USA used to win very often Miss Universe contests what's going on with the population in this country? Men used to be manly and good looking.
A single girl that's a model would not be driving a Caprice she'd be in a Firebird Trans Am Camaro Z28 or souped up Mustang not a Caprice a Caprice is an elegant car for people in there 30s or 40s. But the car is still lovely lol!
The 1967 Caprice and Impala were the same body shells as the 1968 with minor differences Then they changed and the1969 and 1970s Caprice and Impala's were the same body shells with minor differences
I'm just laughing at "astro ventilation" lol...... I know I'm going to sound spoiled but I could never ride in a car on a hot day without real, compressed air conditioning.
Her 'elegant' car is a Chevy? Lol! 🤣🤣🤣 I've been a Chevy fan all my life, but that's hilarious! Lol! They trying to make it sound like a Rolls, or a Bentley...Lol! But what's even more hilarious is that pink tow sack they dressed her in before she used it to polish the hood of that car...Lol!
There is a WHOLE LOTTA "Valley of the Dolls" vibe goin' on here.. BTW.. The best car my dad ever bought was our '68 Impala/Caprice Convertible. We loved that car until my mom t-boned a van with it.
I believe Astro Air Ventilation™ was designed for the low humidity Western Hemisphere. Back East, it was never fun morning, noon or night, having that hot, humid Summer air circulating in the car. Better off opening windows. Yuck! Back in 1968, most cars did not have A/C, only high end cars like Lincolns, Cadillacs, Thunderbirds, etc. On other models A/C was ungodly expensive as a $700 option then.
