Describes the history and performance of Plymouth Hemi Road Runners. I was lucky enough to be the first to drive a 1969 Hemi Road Runner (4 speed) after brought out of storage after over 25 years. After working for a while to get it running, it returned to life with no smoke and gained strength by the minute as it loosened up. You could feel the heritage returning.

Bought a 1968 roadrunner in 1977 when I turned 16. It had 33,000 miles on it and I paid $950 for it. Man what fun I had in that car.

I had two '69 Road Runners in the '70s. No one spent the $825 for the Hemi because the darned things would go fast enough to scare you with the 383 Magnum. Besides, these wonderful beasts basically didn't even have any brakes anyway. I loved my Road Runners! A real basic muscle car that only cost about $3,400 brand new "as is". Memories...

Gotta love an original. No other car had the impact, speed, or charisma of the original Road Runner, not even the 64 GTO. I, too, have driven a 69 Hemi 4-speed Runner, and it was an absolute blast. Brutal to say the least. My old GTX, even being a Hemi, 4-speed, Super Track Pack car, was much more civilized. BTW, the exact car shown in this video has been my dream car for nearly twenty years. I've loved that car ever since I first saw it.

425 hp & 490 lb/ft of torque, both being conservative. No turbo, no supercharger, just raw big block Mopar power.
@dapsapsrp
@dapsapsrp 8 лет назад
+Schön yes those numbers were purposely kept lower to keep the insurance companies from jacking peoples rates way up. There were other reasons as well but realistic hp numbers are closer to 500 or more and torque is much higher.

The Hemis were actually around 425 HP... the 4 bbl. 440" Magnum rated 375 HP was just as fast, and the tri-power 440's were faster than Hemis...

@Fire&Ice909 - After 1966 the 426 Hemi was about 426 - 440 HP depending on tune... and started misfiring above 3500 RPMs... unless it had fresh spark plugs that morning... they were easy to beat on the street unless they had fresh plugs...

When I got out of the Corps I bought a 68 Roadrunner 383 in 1972 for $1476 plus tax. It was that crappy green paint. Repainted it black with gold pinstripe, set of reversed Cragars. Then I swapped the 383 for a junkyard 440 block. Rebuilt it 60 over, Edelbrock Tarantula intake, Holley 830, mild lift cam, Dana 60 rearend, I damn near burned the tires off in the first day. Then a couple years later the oil embargo hit. I couldn’t justify paying more than .80 cents a gallon for gas. I traded it for a 68 Ford Mustang fastback 302 and a Honda 500 motorcycle. What a deal LOL.

2:01 0-60 in 5 seconds and the Quarter Mile in 13.5 seconds on bias ply tires. Crazy! The 426 Hemi Roadrunner was the baddest car to ever come out of Plymouth.

My father bought a 1968 plymoth gtx when he came home from nam and he turned 11's all the time with nothing but a set of Mohawk tires on it. His was the 440ci supper commando automatic and I have 3 cases of trophys to prove the times. His best slip from Detroit drag way was 11.11 126mph with a .445 reaction. All my elders said the car was a freak of nature an ran faster then it should they said they would beat the hemi's through the quarter mile then the hemi would take off and leave it after that.

Not bad... I've had my '68 Hemi bird since it was almost new. It's an automatic and it's a blast to drive if I can keep it going straight. The rear likes to come around real quick and do 180's. The best I ran at the strip years ago was.. 10.60s at 129mph.

If Chrysler didn't killed-off Plymouth back in 2001...But, I guess the Road Runner would have become an similar way as the Charger; a 4-door muscle car that might be won't last long as it's Dodge counterpart. Not to mention that this car, it has an very BIG expensive copyright license with the use of the WB's Cartoon character to be use in the car, if this car was made in '00s to nowadays...

Badass car , my friend just bought a 1969 RR with a 1970 440 automatic , cool car , just did all floor and trunk pans , complete front end rebuild. Headers , torker 1 intake and edelbrock carb , electronic ignition disc brake and power brake conversion. He is talking about a Hellcat drivetrain now , i kinda like that ole 440.

The rating of the hemi of 425 hp was a JOKE. they probably took the hp from 5000 as the avertised rating. I've seen a dyno test of a 1967 hemi engine with headers making 700 hps.

there is one error in here that has become an "urban myth" Chrysler spent the $50000 on the horn STICKER,for the rights to say "voice of roadrunner" . They got the idea of using this horn from forklifts in the chrysler factory. There are thousands of these exact Fulton horns in warehouses all over the world !! They just aren't purple. In fact in 1968 they didn't have the full rights for the road runner character. The horns were just plain black and the side decals were B&W. This horn is wrong.

Horsepower ratings back in the day were tricky. Automakers under and overrated for a variety of reasons. Also, though the 426 held its published HP rating steady at 425 through its 6-year life, the actual number did fluctuate, especially after 1969 when Chrysler started quietly lowering compression ratios on all its V8's. Its a known fact that the 426 was underrated but don't forget that it was underrated in 'gross' numbers which is fine for comparing to other gross muscle car numbers at the time. But if you want a sense of how it compares to todays engines, the Hemi was actually overrated. Most of the internet seems to think the 426 was pushing a little under 500 gross back in 68' - I found one though saying that Chrysler testing at the time showed about 470, but when you convert to net, (roughly 75-80% of gross) 426 Hemi output is around 375. For 71' Chrysler apparently published both gross and net where they acknowledged the a rating of 350 (net) for the Hemi. Seems a little disappointing right? Not at all and that goes for then OR now. If you converted every muscle car to net back then, the Hemi would likely still be on top. As for today? Keep in mind that the 68 RR weighed only 3400 pounds, giving it the same power to weight as a modern 392 Charger.
