On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 8-16-21.
We're looking at a 1968 Oldsmobile Hurst / Olds “Post” car # 463 in Peruvian Silver & Black Paint. The car comes with the 455 CI V8 engine and a “dual gate” automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Lela Wong. Lela’s had this car since 2000. She’s letting her Husband Tim share the car with us. She shares she saw a model of the car and wanted a full sized one. Tim went on a search and found this one for her.
ENJOY!

Beautiful car and incredible video. When I returned from Nam in '68, I bought one from a local Olds dealer. I still have the "Believe It" arrow card that was placed on the windshield by the dealer. There were two for sale and my friend bought the other one. I raced it on the street and strip for two years and then sold it like a jerk. I wish I had it today. I tracked it down 10 years ago to restore it, but the fourth owner blew the engine and it was a basket case. Dead end. I still see them for sale from time to time for big money. Maybe when I hit the lottery I'll buy one to relive my youth. Good luck to the couple who own this one.

Great car with a terrific story, Lou. I've always been a fan of the front end and taillights on the '68 Olds Cutlass / F85 / 442 (the best year IMO was 1970 but that 68 front end has a cool, sinister look to it). What's even cooler about this first-year Hurst Olds is that it's a post car, making it about 100 lbs. lighter than the hardtop, and I prefer the silver & onyx paint scheme (over the white & gold) which gives it more of a sleeper vibe - and with that torque monster 455 under the hood it's a killer. My fav GM A-body will always be the 70 Chevelle, but I'd be proud to have this 68 H/O sitting in my garage!

Just a few clarifications: John Beltz, then Chief Engineer at Oldsmobile ordered the Red plastic "Fender Plates" instead of the normal Black plastic ones to be installed. The camshaft was 308 degrees of duration rather than 328 mentioned. The last cars were shipped from Demmer on Friday, July, 12, 1968, so this car was shipped very close to the end of production at Demmer. The Demmer Assembly Control List does indicate 64 34477 Sport Coupes (Post Coupe) and 451 34487 Holiday Coupes (Hardtop) production cars assembled there. Very nice video indeed Lou, Lela & Tim.

Hurst Olds are top dogs for sure!! You just know that these were build to melt asphalt, especially with this kinda wild engine. This is a roaring dragon 🔥🐉 ready to own the streets. Not much besides the wood and the sporty steering wheel when it comes to interior decoration, but who needs that...muscle cars are all about raw power and in your face looks on the outside and this silver dragon delivers it. The separated lights on each side on the front of the car are madness, but in a cool way. Never knew about the air intakes under the front bumper, once again learned new stuff from Lou's channel. The slick back with the black on it separating the thin taillights from the big chrome bumper looks so sporty. Love it!! The wheels are as amazing as the rest of the car. I feel so great just lookin' at the car. Seeing is believing...owning is unreal!! Now that's a slogan 😀 By the way Tim, if you'll read this comment, you're a real firecracker for purchasing Layla this super Olds 🤘

That car has such a great look and stance and is stunning in silver and black. Normally, the "Gentleman's Hot Rod" it's great to see this one is a "Lady's Hot Rod", well loved by a true car gal!!! It was such a cool feature to have that cold air induction under the front bumper giving the car such clean lines. 1968 was a great year for GM styling for sure and the rear of this car is very nice with the style of the taillights and how the rear bumper tucks up so close to the body and the front bumper has that point to it and mirrors the point on the hood. Great styling, great owners who aren't afraid to drive that car the way it was meant to be driven, full beans!!! Very cool car Lou!!! You always have the best of the best!!!

Lou, holy crap ! I found an exact identical "post" car in an old CT tobacco barn several years ago. It was totally rust free and was parked in that tobacco barn in 1970 when it's owner was drafted and went to Vietnam. He was killed over there and his dad had no interest in doing anything with the car. I bought it for $2000. It took near three years, and $15,000 to restore the car correctly. I drove the car occasionally for two years and the only problem was traction. Michelin tires proved to be better than any others. I eventually sold the car for $50,000 at a spring Carlyle PA event. Those cars were awesome, and fast, right from the factory. Are you aware that those W30 442 engines used the W31 camshaft? The '68 silver 442 is very rare today and this couple is very lucky to own one in such great condition. I now regret ever selling mine.

@@loucostabile I am very pleased that these people are doing everything right for this car. I doubt that there are many still left like there's. Last I knew, the guy I sold mine to, still has it and he's doing right by that one also. My only advice, for these people, would be when storing the car, put some charcoal cubes, on plastic sheets under the seats and a couple of naptha blocks in the car. Charcoal cubes will prevent unwanted odors and naptha blocks will keep any rodents out.
@timwong707
@timwong707 2 года назад
@@sergeantmasson3669 I do place naptha in the car to prevent unwanted visitors in the cold months. To answer your question on the cam shaft, the W31 small block used the W30 cam shaft. The 68 HO used the same 308 degree cam shaft in HO's with no AC. The AC cars used a milder cam shaft and "C" heads with smaller valves. Non AC Hurst Olds car is the way to go IMO!!
@sergeantmasson3669
@sergeantmasson3669 2 года назад
@@timwong707 It wasn't a question. W31 is a 308 camshaft. W30 camshaft was 287. Only the Hurst 442 W30 used the W31 camshaft. I'm a 50+ years master level factory certified auto/truck tech. 26 of those years, I had a very successful classic/vintage vehicles restoration business. Mostly, we restored high-performance vehicles. Over the years, I've worked on every V8 engine that GM ever produced for factory production vehicles. BTW, do you know the real meaning of "442" ? Most people get it wrong. It's 400 engine, 4bbl carb, and dual exhaust. As for the charcoal cubes advice, they prevent unwanted odors and prevent a lot of moisture build-up in the vehicle being stored.

This one is a bit of a sleeper compared to later years. The ram air is hidden instead of a scoop and the graphics are low key. I had no idea that the hurst olds was only available as an automatic transmission. At least my impression was that it would be a manual transmission. Nice car, lucky she let him drive it.

Goodday Lou, As Australia's biggest Oldsmobile fan this is on my hit list as a Old's that I want to be as a passenger in like yourself. Hope to meet Tim one day. Just missed out on being the winning bid on Ebay on the exact diecast Tim had in his trunk. It would complete my Oldsmobile Diecast collection. Love to buy Tim's one with Linda Vaughn signature. Oldsmobile way ahead of the Chevy guys in putting a Big Block into the A bodies. Beautiful colour combo. Sounded awesome with the headphones. Your number 1 Fan in Australia Louis Kats from Melbourne Australia ☺ 👍 ❤

This 68' Hurst Olds is awesome. I think i mentioned before that my cousins husband had a 64' 442, a 66' 442, and a 68' 442 in the same silver as this one! @@loucostabile I certainly wasn't a driver then. Had to rely on my parents to get over to that part of town for baseball practices and games. I knew that Hurst was something that had to do with fast automobiles. That is my impression of a youthful, contemporaneous memory. The building is still there adjacent to a set of railroad tracks. I passed it back in early-September on Street Road in Warminster, Pennsylvania. Well, that's my additional two cents. Best wishes.

Hi, Lou! Seeing is believing, and seeing something as rare as one of 64 signed by Doc Watson and Linda Vaughn is like a once-in-a-lifetime thing, unless of course, you're the owner. That dual-gate shifter makes it even more unique and special, and so does the fact that this belongs to a lady! Back in black (AC/DC take note!) and mission accomplished! Believe it! Olds did a good job of hiding that post. It's difficult to tell a hardtop and sedan apart, with the windows rolled up. My dad had bought the butt ugly '67 F-85 new. Had he waited one more year, he could have gotten a good looking one. His was a good reliable car. But an eyesore
