In modern day Romeo and Juliet, it'd be some drunk skank that already had two abortions half naked twerking on random dudes while the music was some tribal beats liberally adorned with lots of n-word and braggadocios lyrics. Africanization has created such cultural enrichment!
Olivia was 15 when she played Juliet. I saw the movie when it came out, I was 13 and begged my mom for the $1.10 to go with my friend to see it! Girls were already crying before the movie started
I saw this film when I was 14 when it came out. My friends and I must have seen it ten times. We all wanted to be Olivia Hussey and to date Leonard Whiting--who didn't? The lyrics of this song are really heart-breaking and speaks to every young person on earth who think they will be young forever. Now at 70, I still watch the movie from time to time and appreciate the stunning beauty of the cast.
Every face is perfectly chosen. Every moment is a beautiful Renaissance painting come to life. I weep at the depths of artistry in this film, no where to be seen in the cheap CGI of today. Gods, what we have lost! 😢
HindsightPOV 🌸 I didn’t even know it existed till this moment 😊 Now I want to watch it, I’ve only ever read the story, I didn’t realise they adapted it in a movie I’m aware of the modern movies & they were mostly crap
Sunita Fisher OMG. Are you serious? You never knew the Franco Zeffirelli version of Romeo and Juliet existed until now? You should definitely watch it. I haven’t heard one person say they didn’t love this movie. It’s definitely the best film version ever.
Sunita Fisher Oh, wow. You’re from the UK and they never play this Romeo and Juliet there? Most of the cast of this Romeo and Juliet are from the UK. That’s really strange and unfortunate for the Brits of our generation.
HindsightPOV 🌸 I looked at their interview, although they were very young they were so mature for their age. I think people from 60’s are brilliant, I was sadly born in the wrong era. I must admit I don’t get opportunity to really relax & view movies or television, due to work & studies etc
My wife was 17 and I was 16, when something similar to this scene happened at the end of 1970! I am profoundly happy that this happened! We dated for 5 1/2 years as Romeo and Juliet, married in 1976 and are now married for 48 years! To God be the glory!
This is 2021 and I realize that it represents my love for my wonderful wife, Bev! We met in 1970 when she was 17 and I was 16! This is how we were then! We survived and have been married for 44 years! How wonderful!! She even looked like Juliet and I did look like Romeo then, with the blonde hair! This is incredible!! 👍👍🤓😄
Truly a stunning couple; I saw it in 1968 and there has never been, in my opinion, another couple who can touch them in both beauty and chemistry, and that no doubt has attributed to their extremely close friendship of 54 years. She has said they communicate at least every ten days; that speaks volumes to me.❤️
The beauty of Olivia was a shock since I saw Hepburn. Listening to this theme song will revive the memories of seeing this movie for the first time and will be crying😢
I first saw this as a teenager in 1968 . In my opinion , this is the best Romeo and Juliet period . The cast ,The Music ,the Director, the cinematography, and costume design all incredible !!!!!
I love how genuine attraction and the signs of it never really change no matter what time period you’re in. As shown when Juliette gets nervous during their conversation and grabs a glass of wine lol
The 2013 version is pretty close. I hate how assholes bully Hailee Steinfield's looks as if she's not pretty enough to be Juliet. She was fantastic in the role.
These two actors were perfect for their roles. Kudos to the casting director. They are also very talented. Their acting are superb. And those lines. Those lines are so hard to memorize.
This was my mother's movie. I was 4 years old when it came out, but I still remember it. My 1st crush was Olivia Hussey. The song "What is a youth" is one of my favorites to this day.
I saw this movie in 1969, after I had been rejected by a friend for the 9th grade prom. I saw this movie in the Fall of 1969 and prayed that I would find my Juliet! Nothing happened in 1969 and through mostly all of 1970. But something remarkable happened! I was 16 at that time. This beautiful girl a year older than me showed interest in me! I was scared, so I resisted her advances. But at the end of 1970, when she showed up at an indoor track meet that I was running in, I asked her out! She was my true Juliet! We dated for 5 1/2 years, married in 1976, and are now married for 48 years! It is a remarkable story! She is a believer in Jesus and has encouraged me to be a believer, as well! Ancestry has confirmed that her family has a remanent that is descended from Persia and Israel! She is my Queen, a descendent of Queen Esther, Hadassah bat Abeal, daughter of the Tribe of Benjamin, Child of the Most High God! I have been remarkably blessed!
Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey are simply iconic in the Franco Zeffirelli production of Romeo and Juliette. They were perfectly matched in their roles in this tragic love story. I absolutely love this movie.
The thing about Zefferli films is that each scene is like a exquisite picture. Then he has the audacity to find the perfect actress and actors to play in each of his movies. This movie is a masterpiece.
I feel certain Olivia Hussey is exactly who William Shakespeare had in mind for the role of Juliet. She IS and will always be the best who played this role in my mind. So beautiful, yet childlike, full of hopes and dreams of youth.
Olivia Hussey, as Juliet, would challenge DaVinci to capture her incomparable beauty. If she were the model for DaVinci then, people would ask who is Mona Lisa, but rather know only the mysterious beauty of Oliva Hussey as Juliet.
I'm 25 years old and I watched this when I was 20 but I can re-watch this over and over again for the rest of my life! This is the best Romeo and Juliet version for me
Notice that the party had no age gap. Everyone fit, and were socializing with one another. Juliet's father knew how to throw a respectable social event. It's the only party where trespass can be sweetly urged! Innocence today is a lost commodity! The viewer is drawn to the fashion, and cultural respect of one another. Some feel they belong back in this era. It's something one can relate to as well. I know I do. The world was less puzzling, but still, life was complicated just the same back then as it is today.
A mon (Humble) Avis, la plus Belle Version Cinématographique de ROMÉO ET JULIETTE.... Les Jeunes Amants de Vérone sont vraiment très Romantiques ! Merci aux Comédiens Talentueux : Léonard Whiting et Olivia Hussey... Bravo au Réalisateur de Génie : Monsieur Franco Zeffeireli !!!
I miss when historical movies were actually historically authentic, the costumes and music is gorgeous... also social dancing like this should be a thing again
Man, I never knew how beautiful Shakespeare plays are. I always hated Romeo and Juliet, just Shakespeare in general. But after rewatching this, I JUST realized how beautiful the writing really is. The conversation between Romeo and Juliet is so witty. I just fell in love...I guess my teachers were right; Shakespeare’s plays are meant to be seen not read. Man I’m so late on this...
They showed this movie to US in English class in high school. This was one of the best songs I had ever heard. I was very unique because it was a cross between an modern song and a song of the period. It is a masterpiece. I also fell in love with Olivia Hussey. I have often wondered why she did not appear in many movies after that. I saw the movie about 10 years after it came out but the teacher told us it was a hit.
Some say it is because she was seen topless at such an early age. My opinion is that she was not in Hollywood and not American. Hollywood was and is racist in many ways but tries so hard not to be that they fail badly. They are a condescending bunch that think their appearance supersedes their talent since most succeeded because of their appearance and not their talent.
This is my favorite version of Romeo and Juliet. Because the actors especially the one who played Juliet is really suited for the role. She looks so vulnerable, which I think how Juliet is supposed to be. And the one who played Romeo really looks the part too. In my opinion.😉😊🤗.
The best Romeo and Juliet ever. I adore Ms Hussey and Mr. Whiting - fell in love with them instantly the first time I saw this, and still love them. Olivia's laugh! So gorgeous. *happy sigh*
It's a very faithful depiction of Italy around the 1480s, costumes and all. I've always loved that about this picture as an avid history and costume buff. It's the Italy that produced Leonardo and Michelangelo, the setting that Zeferelli's ancestors bore witness to. He really connected with his native culture in a powerful way, no doubt the inspiration for this masterpiece.
Olivia Hussey's Juliet looks EXACTLY the Juliet I always had in mind! Long dark hair, light olive skin, jade green eyes, the sweet, vivacious yet tragically naive Renaissance princess. Olivia IS Juliet!!! :D :D :D
I wonder why there is such a compulsive need to compare actors, dance and music in this film to todays celebrities and artistic expressions. This film is an absolute masterpiece and should be appreciated as it is. Superb!
Right? All people can talk about how beautiful Olivia is when she was underage, which is super creepy. I admire how incredible she was in the role, Leonard was also spectacular. Everyone in this film did a great job.
I loved this film. I was a teen when I saw it and it moved me so much. Zeffirelli's lush backgrounds and medieval colors, Shakespeare's words like music, Juliet's boobs pushed up to overflowing, her husky voice, Romeo's face full of longing, Tybalt's rage and anger causing likeable Mercutio's death, the crassness of the nurse, the kindness of the friar, the bullying father trying to marry off his daughter to the wrong guy, the ultimate tragedy of the two warring families who could not reconcile till they both lost their fairest child. It was so full of drama and color and terrifying end to that beautiful love story. No one could have done it better than Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey. A magnificent movie that will never die.
And all the ladies are swooning over this incredible romantic scene--you can feel the tingle as their hands first touch, then their eyes meet, their hands palm to palm, and the kisses! And such beautiful words!!! Shakespeare truly was gifted...and these 2 actors were the best ever Romeo & Juliet!💖💖💖
The most beautiful Romeo and Juliet actors that will never ever be matched. If you want to make a movie based on R&J, you have to make it the farthest away from this Zeferilli version. If you attempt to match this version, you will miserably fail. This is unsurpassable by all accounts. Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whitting are the true Romeo and Juliet.
This goes back a long long way in my past. I took my first love to this movie. Needless to say we held hand and eventually kissed before the lights came up. Well wouldn’t you ?!
This scene is pure perfection. Zeffirelli's gorgeous direction, the exquisite beauty of Juliet and the handsome virility of Romeo, the perfect supporting cast, the costumes, the scenery, the whole ambience, and at its heart the immortal words of our bard, the mighty Shakespeare.
A rose will bloom, it then will fade, so does a youth, so does the fairest maid. One sweet smile has it’s season for a while. So true, this used to depress me but now gives me comfort somehow. Being a young “fair maid” for a time, becoming a nurturing mother, hopefully a grandmother one day, maybe even a great grandmother - I hope to live through and enjoy every season.
Like every teenage boy in the universe seeing the film, I fell for Olivia Hussey, all the more so as there was a girl like her at my school! I married somebody entirely different, though also petite and brunette it is true. Olivia did not have an easy life (cancer), and I guess seeing her now it would be hard to guess she had been a heart-throb for millions. Such is life. I therefore welcome the perspective-setting story you tell here, and say a heartfelt "God bless you!"
I saw this with my class when it came out. I remember the newspaper questioning whether or not anyone would be interested in watching a movie in Shakespearean English. They thought it would go over peoples heads. Of course that was back when Batman was one of the biggest shows on TV.
Shakespeare's words and Zeffirelli's images describe the love-loving impulse of young people just out of adolescence. The very fast career of this video (with a number of views of more than 2000 per day) during this month of December and then January shows it.
I've always thought the same thing. Many of the actors seem to have been cast because they have faces reminiscent of people from the paintings of that period. In fact, there's a blonde girl at 4.20 (on Rosaline's right) who always makes me of early Renaissance paintings. I'm sure I've seen a face just like hers in one of them, with the same hairstyle as well, but I just can't quite place which picture or artist it was! The film itself is a masterpiece.
This screen is incredibly full of youthfulness it never gets old, no matter how older you get! Every look, every word, every expression of her is so perfect!
@@TheLululililala She was 14. The articles on the movie at the time tackled the controversy of her on-screen nudity due to her age. It wasn't as big a deal for Leonard as he was 18 at the time the movie was released.
I watched this when I was in grade school and I was so amazed with her beauty and innocence.. she was my ultimate girl crush and I wished I looked like her 😂 still love this movie. The beautiful Olivia Hussey
I saw this in 1968 my mom took me along and I didn't want to go. I was in 8th grade and hated Shakespeare it was difficult to read. The film changed my view of the play. The scene on the balcony is timeless as their hands outstretch as they depart. As a reviewer wrote the film is a poem to youth, beauty, love, violence, madness.
@@rmp7400You bet this is the ideal Christian love story. "Love each other as I have loved you" is not a mysterious occult saying. "All are punished" saith the Prince and he too will be punished for a while. "See what a scourge is laid upon your hate, that Heaven finds means to kill your joys with love," implicating God in the determination of their fates. Leave it to Christians to read Thou Shalt Not Kill and conclude Thou Shalt Not Die Until I Say So. Romeo and Juliet died of grief, and Tybalt died of Romeo's grief at Mercutio's death. Mercutio died of Tybalt's rage, which Mercutio and Romeo gave him. As long as I'm already a confessed editor I'll mind us of Mercutio's soliloquy, how easily the scorn of morbidly excessive ritual begets the wounding of protectorates, who have not any primacy of first arrival, nor the expertise of ritual to recommend them.
1.) Zac Efron is a discount Leonard Whiting. 2.) Olivia Hussey’s beauty in her prime of youth was unmatched. 3.) That bard could sing me to sleep every single night. Voice like an angel
Olivia had that kind of face that would be considered beautiful in any time. She fits right in an renaissance painting. She looks good today too, though.
