Relive the 1968 Soutern 500 from Darlington Raceway. On this day Cale Yarborough took the checkered flag. For more NASCAR news, check out: www.NASCAR.com
You guys really need to upload the 2003 Southern 500 in HD, and any races that are in 16:9 HD deserve to be on this channel! Would make good money as well!!
The stockcars looked 1000 times better than today. Today there are all build out of the same building kit. The only thing that you can see that the car next to the other is a different brand, is due to the fake sticker headlights and the brand logo.
Despite their tangle earlier in the race Cale and David finished with clean racing. Cake’s car was pretty banged up but he didn’t make any mistakes for Pearson to capitalize on at the end. Considering the amount of sliding around that was amazing to watch. .
Back when all you needed was a solid car, a good driver, and a few good mates that knew how to spin a spanner, weld, and change a tyre at speed. It would have been a good era to be a stock car enthusiast, both as a racer and a fan.
1968, I was a Senior in High School, chasing the gals and slamming beers with my pals. It was a different world back then. A lot of changes for the good and a lot of changes not so good.
I attended the next year after this one. There was a very long rain delay and I wound up listening to the last few laps at home on the radio, but the best I can remember Cale won it too.
@@kansasjayhawk8386 They sanitized it. They tried to make it so family friendly and politically correct that they squeezed all of the danger and menace out of it. Everybody used to know that the roots of it all was running moonshine through the hills. (Thunder Road, anybody?) Lots of people today have never heard of this. You used to have to watch yourself if you went to the races in Atlanta in those days. It's the same thing in Las Vegas. It was the safest place in the world if you behaved yourself, but people used to love coming here to be around the fringe of the old time mobsters and kind of "warm their hands by the devil's fire." This was all part of the allure. Same with the blues. Stevie Ray Vaughan and B.B. King were exciting because they lived the life they sang about. All of these things had a shady, dangerous past, and that was what gave them their mystique and made them fun and exciting. NASCAR was no different. But when mega corporations try to make everything non threatening and inoffensive, They ruin it. There's nothing left by the time they get done. It's like the difference between a juicy delicious burger you cook and eat at home and one of those things you get at the drive through at McDonald's.
@@jpalberthoward9 I recall how nauseated I got, years ago, when hearing news reports of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway was upgrading its facilities with food service having salads and a day-spa being installed. It nearly got me doubling-over in agony hearing about those upscale amenities for a NASCAR venue.
These cars sound perfect. Todays cars sound completely different. Love the old races & the cars look fabulous compared to today's stuff. Thanks for posting. P.S. Rest Peacefully Cale. Also, Falstaff beer-sure do miss it. A great product.
I like watching those old stock cars . That's when racing was racing. The best teams actually won. As time went on , Nascar came up with too many rules to slow cars down and make them the same . I really believe it caused fans to lose interest. Plus when drivers like The Earnhardt's , and Petty's , and Rusty Wallace, the drivers from that eara . Racing is not the same.
Wow , This Was Just Awesome & Seeing Great Ole S'Kool Racing At The Track Called " Too Tough To Tame " Darlington , This Is Great Stuff Right Here & So Cool To Watch 🏁🏁🏁👍👍👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍✌️
Considering that this was film stock that was over a half-century old, and probably played countless times on film projectors, degradations of film stock is expected.
This is real stock car racing. The cars now are nothing but tin cans not stock cars. I love to watch these old races. I hardly watch racing now. Thank You for the video.
Did you actually watch the video? These weren't actually stock either. And today's cars are way faster, safer, and reliable. Also today's races are WAY more competitive than any of the races in those days.
The scene with the “ gasman “ with gallons of gas flying up in the air and all over has me ( almost ) urinating in my pants , laughing my ass off !!! Bla ha ha ! Glad that he didn’t have a burning cigarette in his mouth like the mechanics in the pits did !!!
Does the modern NASCAR even run at Darlington anymore? I bet they don’t.That’s how long it’s been since I watched a race...and my father got me hooked in he early 70’s with WWOS coverage.
The drivers were about the same size, but the "greenhouse" on those cars was much larger, and drivers weren't packaged nearly as tightly as they are today. Back then, it was probably the easiest way to get out of the car.
@@andyharman3022 yeah Ford and Dodge went through some strange rules that NASCAR made. They claimed they were doing it in the sense of keeping all the cars equal, but it ended up favoring one over the other Automotive manufacturers. Such as, restrictor plates smaller carburetors destroking engines adding weight Etc... they did this to anything over 366 cubic inches... Which ended up helping the Ford 351 Cleveland later on because it could run unrestricted
You have to convert high quality film to 4K to make any difference. IF the film is low quality all you get is the same exact low quality when converting to digital. DAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
