It might not be original but the fact that someone cared enough to make a tribute says something in itself and it still considered a rare car you just don't see these anymore.
Very nice AMX! I believe the 1st generation (68-70) AMX was meant to compete with the Corvette and the 1st generation Javelin competed with the Mustang and Camaro.
God Bless America that’s what Jay said or the pledge of allegiance, the history behind this car is an interesting read, AMC corp. was trying to compete with the big three for the muscle car buck, not having the deep pockets the major players had they had to come up with a gimmick car, it’s their attempt to compete. This is a excellent example of what AMC had to offer back in the good ole days thanks Mr Grams.
The AMX is hardly a gimmick car. It broke a ton of records with Craig Breedlove driving it, Shirley Shahan drag racing it, and other AMX's in Super Stock.
This is a nicely restored AMX SS tribute car. Too bad it is not running the dual quads that the original 390 has. The 401 that is in this car is a great motor. The original SS 390s were 12.5 to 12.75 high compression engines with high lift Isky or Crane cams with Doug Thorly headers and dual quads. They were rated at 340 h.p. they actually produced about 425 to 450 h.p. They ran fiberglass hoods and deck lids and were stripped stark interiors they weighed around 2500 to 2600 lbs. Off of the dealer's showroom they ran low to mid 11s in the quarter mile. Fined tuned with racing slicks Shirley the Drag On Lady ran a blistering 10.55 e.t. in the quarter mile. That is impressive for 1969.

I suppose it depends on your definition of "Tribute", but that is really just a 390 AMX with a R/W/B paint scheme and a hood scoop. But either way, advertising it as a Hurst Super Stock AMX is kind of dishonest. If you're going to even come close to being a faithful "Tribute" or "Clone" of an SS/AMX at all, it's going to have to be a 4-speed car (this is an automatic), and it wouldn't have silly weight adders like Trendsetter side pipes (no they weren't a factory option) or rear bumperettes. Ultimately this is just one fellow's idea of what he liked on an AMX and not many people are going to have the same taste as that guy, like the red console for example. Or the incorrect seats, or incorrect turn signal lenses, or BMW-esque red and blue paint on the grille ribs. That headliner is aftermarket, they were pressed fiber matte with foam backed vinyl overlay originally, so they were soft and quiet. Typically these need to be very close to stock to bring top dollar. Or more than top dollar.
A lot of people lying to themselves right now about what they would do. I can’t even answer this question because it’s not in the moment. Really deep question though.
Only the actual SS AMX that came with the group 19 parts list came with the functional "ram air". Those were cars that Shirley Shahan raced on Super Stock, and were10-11 second 1/4 mile cars from the factory. This is a replica, street legal, and could easily be built into a sub 10 second car. The 1970 had functional ram air.
