1969 Students Fight Over Freedom Of Speech. Like Today?

1969.Pennsylvania State University. Penn State. Amazing footage by student 16mm documentary filmmakers recording just a few weeks in the life of the University in January of that year. Of course it was the year after Martin Luther King was assassinated as was Robert Kennedy. And just years after Pres. John Kennedy was assassinated. The Vietnam War protests in America had split the country. Students were in protest on just about every campus - right and left. Free speech was a major issue at that time. The right to say what you felt even if it disagreed with others and offended others. The parallels to what is happening on college campuses today are obvious. What is free-speech? What is cancel culture? What is politically correct? Back then, a photograph of a nude John Lennon and his wife on the cover of a LP record album provoked this incident as did the desire by some Penn State black students to honor the death of Malcolm X by putting the University flag at half mast. This moment in time fascinates me in part because of its relevance to debates taking place across America at this time.

Yeah. Sure. But what we do with the ideas in the speech and what we do with this nation and society is what matters. We could say, "hello good day. " and respond, "Good day to you sir." Or we could say, "What are you wearing?! That shirt is so stupid." And respond, "Well f*** you!" And people would use their words poorly and no one could stop them from making america mad and sad and insane. Then what? We need more than rights we need morality and responsibility.

Celebrate the dodgers, the fraggers and all others who stood up against imperialism. I am sick of how Americans celebrate the lackeys of their empire. Edit: Sorry, I was insulting at first. Edited it out. I just get angry when I see the mindless brainwashing that the USA is spreading freedom around the globe and we need to celebrate their valiant efforts, when in reality it's a bout rich people's yacht money. Don't join the army (if you possibly can, I understand some do because of lack of perspectives), don't join the police, fudge the system.

The difference, as you know, is that university students in 1968 were trying to open and expand free speech and multiple opportunities for alll willing to work for it. Today, cancel cultuure colleges claim free speach by proclaiming what cannnot be said by anyone outside their specific group. Our generation battled against segregation, while today young people for some reason are wanting segregation under a false narrative of personal identity. If there’s one thing that everyone should be able to agree on, it’s that free speech is a virtue. Unfortunately, many groups will only advocate for free speech when they don’t have control over the cultural institutions of power. Once they gain control over those institutions, they often no longer see free speech as being beneficial to their cause. If you don’t believe in free speech for those who disagree with you, then you don’t believe in it at all.

The keyword here is "debate" and this process is seemingly largely missing on today's universities, when speakers hold campaigns on these campuses. The students have every right to protest/critique speech from right-wing extremists and Trump apologists whining about not being able to blast their propaganda over loud speakers to a mass of students. However, on the flip side, this means that left-wing ideologues should also be challenged on their ideas instead of being blindly accepted; and without automatically disparaging those who seek to critique those ideas. It is asinine to believe that one side has ALL OF / ONLY the best ideas.

David Hoffman, thank you for this short doco. I think it is one of the best I have seen of your productions. I am an Australian and I have never been to the USA, I was born in 1961 and I have older siblings(sisters) who are 5 and 6 years older than myself. One sister was caught up with the hippie movement here in Australia the other sister was more conservative and they were always arguing with each other over then current issues but I think that did bring them together was music, like the Beatles. I remember a lot growing up in the 60s, surrounded by older cousins, and the worry they feared of being drafted to fight in the Vietnam war. The television news on TV at 7PM on our national broadcaster used to scare the crap out of me as a youngster in the 60s, seeing horrible bloody images from the Vietnam war gave me nightmares, on the other and seeing articles about flower power and hippies confused me. Anyway thanks for this doco, its a good one mate.

They tried to put a stop to it by actually doing something about the rising hatred and bigotry. This isn't unique to the right. A lot of the stuff I've seen called censorship is actually just fact-checking. After the student uprisings of the 60s, the teaching of civics, and certain aspects of world history, were no longer taught in the same way, (it's easier to suppress your rights if you don't understand them, or even know what the are). And by the late 70s we had the Federal Department of Education.

Its crazy how freedom of speech has always been a issue. Remember how they tried to crucify Eminem for his lyrics and other artist? And to this day they still try to in some way and ita crazy. Our rights are always under attack at all angles and it is crazy. Freedom of speech, Freedom of fire arm ownership are just two things that always going to be attacked

Mr. Hoffman, this was fascinating. I live in State College, and I work for PSU and this was all completely new to me. It was eerie seeing these places one can visit today, and though the tenor is completely different now the discussion is still alive and well. I .. do know that some time in April 1970 there was a small insurrection and some damage was done to the PSU President's home (who, after this, moved off-campus). The incident stemmed I believe from some sort of sit-in at Old Main that went south with the State Police being called in. “Old Main” is where the executive offices are for the University, and Old Main lawn continues today to be a hub for civil rights and free speech. The discussion of your personal views of free speech really resonated with me. I agree. Thank you for sharing this with us!

The notion that left-wing college students nowadays have "destroyed itself from the inside", and "diluted their point", following the uprise of cancel culture and resurgence of protests is just short-sighted. It's one of the most common criticisms I see from older folk who can't accept that they didn't do enough. Marching for MLK, participating in the suffragette movement, being a rocker versus a mod, it doesn't matter who you were, it matters who you are. If you're of the older generations, and denounce the newer ones for trying to improve and fix the mess you all have left us, you don't deserve the right to associate with your past. Most older, former liberals haven't tried to bridge the gap between the old and new, and simultaneously blame the new generation for not listening to the old. Just like you all did when you were young. Just take some responsibility here y'all. Great video.

Noone is against fighting injustice, the problem is the extreme left that is using these injustices as a means to push an extremely dangerous narrative. Free speech is under attack and with the woke movement a new form of group think has arrived. That, if pushed too far will create the same catastrophic consequences as in the 20th century.
@Benito264

@@wes.9353 Yet if you point these things out the left uses the real suffering of minorities to justify their dangerous and deceptive agenda. It's like 'Oh if you really care about trans people you'd have no problem demolishing free speech to protect them."

@wes.9353 3 года назад
@whadup I hear this argument be made a lot. In the interest of understanding, what part of free speech is currently being taken away and restricted by any quadrant of the left-wing? Mainstream DNC stifling aside, who's, and what kind of free speech has been taken away by said "cancel culture" and "wokeness"? It only seems like the go-to argument for those who feel threatened over the possibility of them being the next one to be cancelled. But the fact is, almost everyone who's been canceled was rich, famous, and still have a career. In the preconceived belief that those who act as if cancel culture is a bane to our democracy, it's always sounded more to me like a projection of their own guilt, afraid to accept responsibility of their past.

It's not hard to see that Capitol Insurrectionists saw the power their beliefs held in the United States. They were legitimately under the impression that Capitol police, National Guard, and the senate all could be on their side when it was over. People died that day from their hands - no law enforcement died or got attacked in the same ways during the BLM protests, which was nationwide in every major and minor city. But if you want to evaluate the importance of one group over another, regarding the perspective of the main power-structures in our law enforcement and government, imagine what the Capitol Insurrection would have looked like if it was BLM. That's a restriction of free speech. Not what we fight for, it's what we continue to fight against.

This was a really interesting video! It was nice to see some insight into what people thought about freedom of speech back then and the topics at hand applied to their real life problems on campus. But to everyone in the comments going on about how freedom of speech is being blocked and people are fighting to end it today, I really don’t think it’s fair to look at it in a black and white bubble. If my assumption about what is troubling to you about removing certain freedom of speech is correct, it’s over hate speech. I think it’s important to make that distinction. What they were fighting for back then, was freedom to express themselves and not be bond by societies archaic rules of thinking and speech. What people are fighting for now is putting an end to the tolerance of hate speech. If someone says they are going to kill someone and have the means to do it, that means they have intention for harm. If we know they have that intention, why would we wait until it has already passed instead of stopping it before it’s too late. Or as another example, ignorance surrounding racial or sexual minorities. Or women. This kind of speech is degrading to those kinds of people and is only brought forth becuase of ignorance and intolerance. This brings no benefit to anyone in society and is not free thought in the interest of expanding ideas and such. This is the direct opposite of that. If we know this then why wouldn’t we try to stop it. What value does this bring to anyone’s lives, what new ideas are being introduced or being explored? Absolutely none above a better understanding of how ignorant or hateful people can be. So if they bring absolutely no value to society, they actively infringe on peoples well being and in some cases, are used as a means to hurt others or take serious illegal action as to further their ideas, then why should we tolerate it. That is not at all the same thing they are fighting for here in this video and at that time. Ironically enough, freedom of hate speech, hurts the freedom of others. So again, why should we tolerate it. And I understand the idea of giving up some of those freedoms is scary, as what’s the stopping point? What is considered hate speech, and what is normal freedom of speech and thought? Where does it all end? And to be honest, no one knows. But we do know the effect hate speech in general has on people. So as a closer, I would kindly ask that if you are reading this, that you consider what it is you are fighting for and who it helps. If this will bring value to your life and the lives of those affected by this kind of speech, or if it may be out of ignorance to the struggles those groups face. Thank you.

Hate speech, obscenity, speech which goes against the good order of society, heretical speech endagering the eternal soul of others, speech insulting to the Empire... As a historian I've seen the same thing repeated over and over again. Every group through history who has sought to control the speech of others has had a justification. And every time, the net result has been the oppression of one side of the discussion by another in order to maintain power and control. You cannot explore new ideas if you are not willing to risk offending others and risk being made uncomfortable yourself. Open speech, free discussion, risking making others uncomfortable, or being challenged yourself has lead to most, if not all, of the major advancements in society. And the reverse is also true. Most, if not all, of the greatest atrocities have occurred, not because of what anyone said, but because those in power would not allow anything different. And because I know whether it is said or not, someone will be thinking "but the N@zis"... They did not kill millions of people because of "hate speech". They killed millions after they had control of what people could or could not say. They killed millions because when it got to a point where people needed to be able to speak out and tell everyone what was happening, and say it was wrong, anyone who tried was committing a crime. Anyone who tried was silenced.

Interesting story, and hopefully a reminder to all that the issue of free speech still has a lot of gray areas. Regardless of where people stand on the issue, I think it’s important to remember that the moment the GOVERNMENT imposes their will, that’s where there is legitimate cause for concern. Very harrowing reminder of this at the end of the video. Next time you’re up in arms about people being censored on Twitter or put on blast on a college campus, remember that military personnel actually KILLED people at Kent State for exercising their First Amendment rights. Perspective is everything.
@paineoftheworld

Thanks again for your informed perspective. What struck me from this video was actually your ending remarks about Kent State. The death of the students at the hands of the State and the silence that followed. Was it grief, horror, disbelief? Maybe a bit of all? We still haven't slipped the from the bindings of our past, we are still fighting the Revolution (the authority of the State vs Liberty), the Civil War (ourselves vs what human rights are), and the struggle to bring the Enlightenment to every human's heart (that each person is individual and important vs the group). And like you, I don't have answers. Just a view.

I think I’ve at last gone to a useful conclusion about the turn of events we are witnessing. To say someone is “fighting for free speech” is not the same between a person who is fighting for _their own_ opinions to be heard, but when they’re willing to fight for _other people’s_ opinions _they don’t agree with_ to be heard. It’s easy to fight for your own potentially selfish opinions to be heard. It’s another to fight for the concept of free speech, which doesn’t favor any particular opinion.
