The Chevrolet Camaro is a mid-size[1][2] American automobile manufactured by Chevrolet, classified as a pony car[3][4] and some versions also as a muscle car.[5][6] It went on sale on September 29, 1966, for the 1967 model year and was designed as a competing model to the Ford Mustang. The car shared its platform and major components with the Pontiac Firebird, also introduced for 1967.
Four distinct generations of the Camaro were developed before production ended in 2002. The nameplate was revived on a concept car that evolved into the fifth-generation Camaro; production started on March 16, 2009.[7] Over 5 million Camaros have been sold.
Before any official announcement, reports began running during April 1965 within the automotive press that Chevrolet was preparing a competitor to the Ford Mustang, code-named Panther.[8] On June 21, 1966, around 200 automotive journalists received a telegram from General Motors stating, "...please save noon of June 28 for important SEPAW meeting. Hope you can be on hand to help scratch a cat. Details will follow...(signed) John L. Cutter - Chevrolet public relations - SEPAW secretary." The following day, the same journalists received another General Motors telegram stating, "Society for the Eradication of Panthers from the Automotive World will hold first and last meeting on June 28...(signed) John L. Cutter - Chevrolet public relations SEPAW secretary." These telegrams puzzled the automotive journalists.[8]
On June 28, 1966, General Motors held a live press conference in Detroit's Statler-Hilton Hotel. It was the first time that 14 cities were connected in real time for a press conference via telephone lines.[8] Chevrolet general manager Pete Estes started the news conference stating that all attendees of the conference were charter members of the Society for the Elimination of Panthers from the Automotive World and that this would be the first and last meeting of SEPAW. Estes then announced a new car line, project designation XP-836, with a name that Chevrolet chose in keeping with other car names beginning with the letter C such as the Corvair, Chevelle, Chevy II, and Corvette. He claimed the name, suggests the comradeship of good friends as a personal car should be to its owner and that to us, the name means just what we think the car will do... go. The Camaro name was then unveiled.[8] Automotive press asked Chevrolet product managers, what is a Camaro? and were told it was a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs.[9]
According to the book The Complete Book of Camaro: Every Model Since 1967, the name Camaro was conceived by Chevrolet merchandising manager Bob Lund and General Motors vice president Ed Rollett, while they were reading the book Heath's French and English Dictionary by James Boïelle and by de V. Payen-Payne printed in 1936. In the book The Complete Book of Camaro, it states that Mr. Lund and Mr. Rollett found the word camaro in the French-English dictionary was slang, to mean friend, pal, or comrade. The article further repeated Estes's statement of what the word camaro was meant to imply, that the car's name "suggests the comradeship of good friends, as a personal car should be to its owner"
Introduced in February 1970, the second-generation Camaro was produced through the 1981 model year, with cosmetic changes made in 1974 and 1978 model years. The car was heavily restyled and became somewhat larger and wider with the new styling. Still based on the F-body platform, the new Camaro was similar to its predecessor, with a unibody structure, front subframe, an A-arm front suspension, and leaf springs to control the solid rear axle. Road & Track picked the 1971 SS350 as one of the 10 best cars in the world in August 1971. RS (shown to the right), SS package was dropped in 1972 and reintroduced in 1996.
The 1980 and 1981 Z28 models included an air induction hood scoop with an intake door that opened under full throttle.

I built this kit and it turned out pretty good. I say pretty good because the hood doesn't sit properly and the headlight surrounds are not moulded well. I considered building a second one in hopes of getting one that didn't have these issues. After seeing results from others and reading comments I don't think I will.

Another good kit by Round2. If only ALL of their kits were like this, negative comments about AMT/MPC/Polar LIghts would go away. It's a pretty Camaro, I was surprised that they made the front bumper a separate part from the grill. For people that like to do resto-mods and want to delete the chrome, that's a plus.

Nice. I built this same kit while home during quarantine in April 2020. My kit was cast molded in orange though, and had the split bumper. It was an AMT brand, and all the sprues and everything looked just the same, so I'm guessing they just decided to mold it in white now.

I've been looking forward to this build for a long time (as the 70 Camaro is one of my favorite rides) Chris and as always you don't disappoint. I 'm currently putting the finishing touches on the split bumper version of this kit. I mimicked an episode of Muscle car and built as close as I could to the one they built from the Citrus green paint to the brown carpet a tan seats right down to a big block Chevy V8 I scrounged up in the parts box and passed it off as a 402 as those were all factory options for the Camaro in 1970 except the 402 was only available in the Super Sport and not the Z28

I had a 72 RS, Placer Gold and white. Yep, mine had a saggy rear end! Fun fact: if your Camaro was ordered by the dealer with the spoiler package, the rear spoiler was mounted at the factory, the front was shipped in the trunk to prevent damage. When the car arrived at the dealer, they would take the front spoiler and put it in the parts dept. so they could sell it to someone else!

Hey man great build!I'm making mine a "Dirt Track Late Model". Really like this kit enough to buy another on! I think I'll go dark blue with my street version? Maybe gray? Who knows at this point? Thanks again for the really awesome video Chris, with ideas!

Back when, I got quite excited when neighbor drove up in a Camaro soon after this body style came out. Red with the split grille. My tthrill subsided quickly, though, when I found it turned out power (hardly) was a 250 I6 with base 3 speed cloumn shift manual. Looked okay, but no cigar!

I'm working a 1969 dodge charger r/t but it doesn't have the side scoop,s on the doors I was wondering what you might suggest to use to my make my own side scoops like they where part of the original model kit? Thankyou I love you videos about the model kit reviews and builds.

my older brother had a 70 full bumper camaro he pulled out of a junkyard when I was a toddler. I think that car is responsible for me being a gearhead. he painted it a really dark blue. so dark it almost looked black. he and my dad built a 383 stroker engine for it. he took it to the local dragstrip and he got kicked off the track for going too fast without a rollcage.

It's known as an SS body, not just a 'full bumper'. The RS option brought the split bumpers.

hpiguys, You did a very nice job on this. I found this video as I'm looking to purchase this car in diecast. It's for a "family" sentimental reason. A uncle had this very car but it was brown with white strips, He passed years ago. My goal would be to build this and paint it brown and use the white decals and send it to my cousins. But I know I'd do a horrible job building it. You did such a wonderful job, would you be willing to build me one and send it to me for a price? I know, a weird request, but it would be a nice surprise for them. - btw, the car was special order and was very fast.

This is by far my favorite body style for a Camaro, but I'm more partial to the split bumper cars with round signal lights. I finally got to make a hobby shop stop today and bought a bunch of metalizer lacquers, so my projects are back up and running. Expect pics on the Facebook page soon!

The second gen Camaros had a factory stance of the front being higher than the rear, nothing wrong with the model. This provided better weight transfer on acceleration being the body was so long.

Thanks, I remember them all sitting a little low in the back until the locals stuck air bags under them and stuff.

@@hpiguy Yeah, raising the rear end was defeating the purpose. I've owned every generation of Camaros except the 4th, the '68 Z/28 is the one I should never had sold. Nice color by the way, but I hate to tell you, you got the rear stripes reversed. If they were switched sides, the curve of the stripes would follow the curve of the trim.

Ok, guess I will have to buy this on payday. I owned a 70 1/2 full bumper with that style spoiler while in the navy in 83. I just need to paint mine primer
