Well, it's almost a year after my first comment and nothing has changed - I still try to listen to this veritable symphony on wheels as often as possible. Sorry my Italian friends, but there is no flat 12 Ferrari engine that comes close to replicating the incredibly strong, virile sounds produced by this Porsche flat 12. Simply wunderbar!

Rarely do I feel compelled to thank a contributor, most channels ‘add’ to the images with unnecessary music or flash graphics. This time however the soundtrack is perfect Porsche. The editing is simple and effective. Thank you. That 917 is beautiful in so many ways. I was lucky to see one at Spa on a classics track day and your video echoes that perfectly. The thing about Porsche is that they've never been known for being the fastest cars, or particularly outstanding in any one specific category. They seem to be all about two things - class and perfect balance. They just drive so smoothly and feel like an extension of the driver's own body. I never quite got the value of that until the first time I drove an older 911. Most generally, I am a pony car and muscle car kinda guy that dabbles in old pickup trucks and vehicles with some oddities that amuse me like a VW Thing. I've never been much into brands or prestige or any of that. But there is something about a Porsche that commands respect in the fact that it's one of the few companies left that still puts a heavy focus on the experience the driver will have while operating it, while also making the vehicle a visual work of art. A friend of mine that used to work in the vintage racing circuit got me into Porsche, and I'll forever be grateful that he did. What a wonderful dream to chase.

I can't think of a word that describes how absolutely awesome that flat 12 sounds. It's a land based rocket ship on wheels.

I was lucky enough to grow up close to Road Atlanta. Many track days listening to a SINGLE Panoz LMP car was just orgasmic. You could hear every shift 1.5 miles away on the other side of the track. This brings back those days. Thanks. When you hear them running solo it’s just completely different sounds you can hear that we’re drowned out in races.

I can’t even describe how in love with all types of cars I have been since I can remember when I got my first hot wheel. I currently have a 530 horse mustang GT with a bunch of custom parts, but hearing the sound of this car is just glorious to say the least… the Savage raw power is adrenaline pumping it really gets me hyped up right after I heard it, I went out and drove my car… thank you. It truly was a pleasure to experience, especially on a 60 inch television with Bose sound…

Wow, the flat 12 engine sounds so smooth refined for car that was nearly 50 years old at the time of the upload. A testament to the superior engineering and passion for perfection of 1960's-70's Porsche. The 917 is a truly formidable racecar, and is seriously one of my all-time faves along with the Ford GT40, Saleen S7R, and Lambo Huracan Super Trofeo.

I have personally seen the 917 (it was the light blue, not gulf) during a endurance revival in Monza around 2010. I was standing right on the fence of the wood right on curva grande / biassono long and fast acceleration bend, and when it passed flat out upshifting was just incredible, you don’t forget

For me this era was motor sport at its peak. The power, the sound, the smell. Only again in the mid 90s to mid 2000s did the 12 cylinder F1 Ferraris and others come close the this level of fan entertainment.

I stood next to the Gulf Porsche 917 that won at Daytona in 1971 just after the race. Your entire body vibrates when this beast is idling. This audio is great but nothing like being there.

Was at Daytona and Sebring those years working as a body man on an RSR Porsche. Never forget the sound of those GT cars going around the bank in the middle of the night at Daytona, huge flame erupting out of the back of the car on the downshift. Brake rotors glowing a red hot slowing down for the turn coming down off the banking. Remember Hurley Haywood in the Paul Revere. Whittington had him beat with only a couple laps to go, Haywood a lap down. Haywood clawed his way back into the race and climbed all over the back of Whittington's car, Whittington couldn't resist the bait. Whittington could have just let him on by and easily won the race but Haywood, right on his tail was pushing him faster and faster into every corner with only a few laps to go. Whittington skidding like he was on ice coming into the hairpin, instead of making the turn went straight ahead plowing right into the tire barriers crushing the nose of the car and giving Haywood the race. Never forget it. Remember thinking; "Money can't buy you love."

I absolutely love the sound of this thing. especially coming along the straight before the finish line I really started to respect the sound, much like how I respect how modern f1 cars sound, but it sounds more throaty, and sounds faster than it is. thats not always a bad thing

I’ve never been a big fan of drag or circle track. I once had a ‘74 El Camino I heavily ‘massaged’ the suspension & mildly ‘stoked’ the small block. Some of the best times of my life! Southern Connecticut…Madison,Westbrook…Horsehill & Breakneck hill Rds. !!! Oooowee!!!

It would be very hard to climb back in a domestic vehicle after driving the 917.

This is my thought, First, who could build a car like that 50 years ago, well Porsche. Second, 917/30 is twin turbo well over 1,200 hp. Who will consider putting turbos on a Porsche racing flat 12. Well Porsche did. Third, this car can still kick ass today???, is a Porsche of course. Fourth, I'll love to see a new generation of this kind of engines, new engineering with a big pair of turbos and a PDK, well is just a dream. Wow what a beautiful piece of engineering, keep them running! !

I don't understand, who are those people that disliked this video? What's the reason? I genuinely don't understand how any car enthusiast can hate this sweet car. What's wrong with people?

Has it occurred to anyone that we're the last generation that will have such a vivid appreciation of the sights and sounds of internal combustion as it relates to auto racing? Sad but true. Sounds like this bring back instant memories of walking from my 2 mile away parking spot to Watkins Glen back in the 70's when F1 was there. There's just no way possible that electric racing with excite the senses the way machines such as this 917 did and still do. We're rapidly closing in on the end of an era, like it or not.

Grew up in Daytona and was 10 yo when these cars raced the 24 hrs. They were like great white sharks eating everything in their path. Thank you for the chance to hear these beautiful machines again.

There were a 907 (or 908..) and 917 running at Watkins Glen Vintage a few ears ago.. I can't really describe the ground shaking sounds emanating from these cars while in the garage and pits near them.. OH, & to see them run at nearly 200 mph on the back straight!!!! A high point in my & my son's lives!

At high speed ( around 190 mph) these became very light in the rear end and were notorious for spinning the rear tires. Nevertheless these regularly saw a top speed of 250 mph on the mulsanne straight at lemans. Vic elford who was Porsche’s main driver said there were only 4 or 5 drivers in the the world that could drive these cars at the limit. Derek bell, Jackie Ickes , Vic elford, Brian Redmon. Others tried and others died.
